Sadly, this is what happens far too often with so-called televangelicals pursuing their social conservative agenda: they attempt to inflict their doctrines on non-members/non-believers through secular law. Funny, I don't remember Jesus going to the kings of His time and begging them to codify His teachings into their secular laws to help him manage his flock!! They also do not seem to realize that calling for State intervention in private lives is a LIBERAL tactic, not how conservatism actually works! Reagan's mantra was "Let the marketplace decide." This applies to the marketplace of Ideas as well as goods and services. When a majority of citizens chooses to forgo the practice of aborion, for example, then abortion may cease. Not until then, because a vocal minority cannot impose its will upon a lopsided majority. This is how free-market democracy works, whether we like it or not. If banning a practice was really God's Will, how could it possibly continue? Unless, of course, that allegation was simply made up and used as a cudgel to force others to follow self-annointed "leaders." It is, after all, a very Human vice to crave Power (and it worked for Lucifer, too).

It is very interesting about how many evangelical Christians are getting corrupted when introduced to power in their lives. Their definetly seems to be a trend that is so distict especially when it is in contrast to the New Testament teachings.

This observation is not to say that there is not a lot of corruption in politics or other places where there is power. In fact, it has been very disheartening to see it so pervasive in Republican politics in the last few years, with a few cases in the Democratic Party also.

And then their are the large corporations like Enron, etc. so it can pervade as long as the elements of power and another vice, such as greed, are present. I feel sad that these men could not have chosen better paths and been better examples to the young people of our nation.

What people don't realize is if this church is not voluntarily a 501c3 organization it can do and say anything it wants. Churches are only silenced if they agree to enter the IRS system under 501c3. If they don't, and about 10 % of churches don't, then they are still tax expempt, just people giving to them can't wirte it off. It was passed in the 50's, sponsored by LBJ in a backdoor effort to silence churches. Churches that enter the system are fools. Churches are tax exempt by virtue of the First amendment. "Congress shall pass no law regulating the free exercise of religion".

When will people finally understand that televangelists are a sham. Most, like White have no credentials of any kind. Few have ever attended a genuine seminary. Yet, they reel people in and bilk millions of dollars from folks who have little or nothing to give, spouting [stuff] that comes from their personal, uninformed interpretation of the Bible. Why don't folks ask themselves: How did a former, uneducated * * * * * gain the knowledge and experience required to preach to others and to council others? Who knows? My personal opinion is that only about 5% of the United States population is capable of critical thinking. Most make decisions based on emotion, religious conviction (which generally requires that one does NO critical thinking), and prejudice.

Every few years one of these charlatans gets caught either defrauding someone, or having gay sex on meth, or visiting hookers, etc. but there is an element of our society who continues to believe that the "reverend", “brother”, or “Bishop” they watch on the tube is somehow different than the others. Ever since Aimee Semple McPherson, these quacks have victimized sincere, trusting people.

I hope both of the Whites are found guilty of every crooked thing they've done and go to jail. At least that will be two more of these frauds we don't have to worry about.

I believe everyone has a right to prosper themselves, earn a living, and even choose a lifestyle they desire to live based on their needs and desires. However, I also believe that there are far too many so-called "ministers," who have been made wealthy from behind the pulpit. If you want to use your "anointing" or "gift" to obtain wealth, then it is YOU who need to answer to God for that someday - not me, not anyone else reading this article.

But at the same time, you should have enough integrity and conviction to do it the world's way. Don't get rich off the church...off of the anointing. You want to write a good book and strike a lucrative deal with a publisher, my hat tips to you - you're earning it the world's way. But don't take money out of your offering plate and then tell you congregation how "God" has blessed you... you were blessed by taking money out of the offering...which was meant to go into your ministry.

The games and justifications that are made by these [...] ministers cross into an area of grey allowed them by the "tax laws" that exist for non-profits. What makes you any different from the convicted Enron execs, who are now doing time? God help you if you call yourself a minister and do not act in a manner of respectfulness towards what you tell people you fear the most.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Many Americans play by the rules, do things because it is the right thing to do, etc... However, many churches, religious institutions, non-profit (supposedly) organizations are structured to manipulate the system and avoid paying taxes.

While it isn't ALL, it is enough keep investigating reporters, elected representatives and IRS auditors busy for decades.

I am wondering if the money the checks from the staffers were written on was even their money to give. I was approached in more than one election cycle to make a donation to a Republican campaign in Florida with money that wasn't mine. I declined to participate. The practice isn't uncommon amongst the Republican party.

I prefer not to give the details, but as an American Citizen it was a rude awakening.

It is no wonder that our Nation has gotten so off track. Absolute power corrupts, absolutely. AND don't kid yourself...money is power.

Commenters have raised several issues, not all related to this case.

It is a sad day when a pastor lies. True, and some do. However, why would anyone cast all churches and pastors in the same lot as one crooked one? That's like saying your child's teacher is a pervert because another teacher at the same school was convicted of child molestation.
How many of you complainers have actually attended church for any length of time?
Churches don't pay taxes because they are organized non-profits. The people who attend the church, do pay taxes. Church staff pays taxes. Pastors can elect to pay taxes or not. If they nelect not to, then they also do not collect social security benefits. If you look at the Barna Group polls, you will see that only 20% of church attenders pay 80% of the church expenses. So if some people are being duped, they fall within that slight 20%.

As far as staying out of politics, since when did my civil rights cease just because I go to church? Do you really want to pursue that line of reasoning? In addition, why shouldn't I speak out against abortion? You speak out against Christians. Should one be allowed and not the other? The "Church" is made up of people. The pastor is the leader of the group and it is up to that group to either follow or abandon the leader. It's really no one else's business. Just like it's not our business how much money others feed into their liquor/drug suppliers.

Personally, if my boss required me to pay any amount for any reason, unrelated to my responsibilties as an employee, politics or otherwise, I would have to question his integrity.

As far as Mr. Bates goes, it sounds like he may have suspected he would have a problem to begin with. Why waste time trying to trap someone you already believe is a crook? Especially if you call yourself a Christian. Reread the scripture that talks about being unequally yoked and forgiving, plus taking your business to the church and not the non-church. What happens to people like Mr. Bates is that his own character comes under question, and really, Mr. Bates is causing himself more suffering than he would have if he would have just shut down the deal. It is clear in the audio that he was trying to trap Rev White. The real question is, why would a business man make a verbal deal and then audio tape it, and especially without the knowledge of the second party to the deal? Where are Mr. White's rights to know he is being taped?

Come on people. Think with your head and not your hatred of the Church.

Please know that leaders of the Mormon church do not solicit money for candidates nor is politicing allowed at any of its organized events or in its buildings. There are some members who are active in getting support for their cause/candiate but no official request from the Church leadership has ever been made except in the case of same-sex marriage amendment, which is directly against the beliefs. The 1st ammendment only guarantees the freedom to practice your religion. If monies collected are not used for charitable causes, then that money is taxable income just like the money that I collect from my customers in return for the goods or service that I provide. Then they tool around in the Rolls Royce that God apparently wanted them to buy with the proceeds. Does the license plate really read "Big Daddy"? Seriously, that's what I heard from someone who lives in Tampa. Anyway, the only lives these two are improving are their own. Any question as to their conscience or as to what GOD would think of all of this is moot. Has their goal ever been to positively impact the spiritual lives of those searching or to provide for their fellow man? Does anyone truly believe that while walking around the Rolls and kicking the tires that Paula and Randy White asked themselves (or each other); I wonder how many four year old children we could send to pre-school on this sticker price? or...How many young mothers could we sponsor to attend parenting classes? or...How many houses could Habitat For Humanity build? First of all, All Pastors, Bishops, Reverands, etc. have a duty to preach the Word of God!! Secondly, if that means teaching against abortion, against homosexuality, whatever is against the Word of God. Then they better do what God called them to do. really be themselves. These retreats have changed many of my old friends in ways that even Jesus would be ashamed.
Contolling people to keep them in a certain church is not the way to keep ones flock. Feed them the Word of God and they will know how to control themselves in a way that is pleasing to God and to the church. Feeding the flock the Word
is the only way people can learn how to be good examples to people who are unchurched. Too many of Pastors are feeding the church Psychology or lead by a Psychologist instead of a Bible Believing Pastor. We find many churches will not hire someone with real credentials...they just seem to want the ones with an Edge so they can use them for their own selfish desires. But, we can still find Pastors who are still doing a good job getting souls saved and preaching the Word as they should. So, don't let's throw out the good with the bad.

The public has been duped into believeing these so called "churches" are churches at all. they are not recognized by law as churches because they gave up the headship of the Lord Jesus Christ to get favors from the government, namely tax exemption through the 501(c)(3) status. when they do that they agree to abide by IRS rules and state laws governing corporations. They at the same time subordinate the "church" to the state and come under it's authority, a position christians have historically been persecuted for not submitting to going back to the days of Rome when roman catholicism merged pagan beliefs and practices of the day with the then persecuted church. it was a compromise born from Hell and resisted by all true christians through out history. The 501(c)(3) was invented by a devious criminal christian hater who hated the ministries that were exposing him for the immoral criminal he was when he ran for the senate. He later became president his name was Lyndon Baines Johnson. True churches will never submit the church under government control because it can not. Christ is the head of the true Church. The churches Inc. as they should more honestly be called have agreed when they incorporated and got their 501(c)(3) status to rules the states and the IRS made as a condition of their tax exempt status and if they violate them they should go to prison for it and exposed for what they really are, CREATIONS OF THE STATE not God. Jesus Christ said "I will build my church and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it", he didn't say the state would build it. These have sold their birthright for a mess of pottage, they sold out to the world, the world sees it and despises their hypocrisy. The true church gave up their birthright of being tax immune for a mere privlege of tax exemption. One is a right given to the church by God the other is a privelege given by the state rights are forever, priveleges are conditional and temporary (at the whim of the state that created them). They (churches INC.) violated their ungodly agreements and should be held accountable. Their greed has nothing to do with true Christianity and I believe prevent many from receiving the truth of the gospel.
