It is my considered opinion that there are far, far too many "religions" that are purely and simply tax-free money machines...
A church is a business, and should be taxed exactly the same as any other business.....
With a few notable exceptions, the majority of the "ministers" that I've been acquainted with were far less religious than greedy..and they can spend hours justifying and explaining how they so richly deserve all that tax-free income.
Tax churches just like any other business, and we'd see a lot less pseudo religion and a lot more truly sincere and commited leadership.

The Catholic church is the largest, richest mega-church of all. I'm all for taxing churches, so long as all religious organizations are included. What the Catholic church has that the Whites, Longs, Jakes, etc., don't have is POWER and INFLUENCE. So long as the Catholic church is a 501(c)(3)and are not legally required to pay taxes, the other churches have no fear of being required to pay taxes. It's a shame. The money raised by taxing these institutiions could eliminate poverty and disease in a lot of places. Now that's a Christian concept!

I agree that abuses happen and should be exposed, but I believe this should be done, so that honest leadership is strengthened and not undermined. Not all, and I would say, very few ministries are in place for personal gain. Since businesses receive tax breaks for charitable donations, then why is it a big deal for a business that is all about charity to receive tax breaks? The original meaning of the word charity was "love". I think that a man that devotes his life to ministering, should also live by that, just as a banker lives by the his chosen profession. If a banker has many customers he must serve, then should his paycheck be small? If we barely paid doctors, how many people would want to become one?
By the way... the tithe is all that God says is His; He expects it to be paid. An offering is a gift, and God loves a "cheerful" giver. If you give to get whether it be for financial return, or out of a sense of responsibility, you're giving for the wrong reason. You should be able to give as if you didn't need it anyway.

First of all, I am a Christian, and a pastor. I hold a Doctorate of Ministry from Howard University School of Divinity.

Second, the ministries of some of these individuals are sound, biblically correct and beneficial to a great number of people. There are many ways that people seek advantage, religion is one way. People who are born to privileged circumstances, Bushes, Cheneys, Buffets, Gates, Trumps, royal families, political dynasties, have their advantages. Why not allow those individuals who desire the advantage of believing that God favors them, strengthen that belief by having individuals who have had similar experiences speak to them of God's love and concern. We have CEOs of companies making millions of dollars for robbing people of their homes, we have people who manage businesses which allow tainted beef to be sold to Americans, we have people in other nations robbing us at the gas pump and at the cashier register when we buy lead painted toys. Perhaps individuals who have given should think more deeply before they give, however, the choice to give is there own. No one can make them give, no one can make them come to church, or watch these persons on television, or listen to them on the radio, or the internet. Allow the people to make their own decisions. Do not punish the people who are seeking to give hope to people who need it.

Pastors/ministers do not, in fact, receive their income tax-free as you imply; they are considered self-employed and thus not only pay income tax and the 7.65% SSI tax that we all pay, but also the 7.65% that our employers usually pay for us and self-employment tax.

Religious "leaders" like the Whites are clearly in the business of faith for their own benefit, but it is a broad stereotype to say that ministers in general do what they do for money. There are plenty of easier ways to make more money.

Don't go leaping to vast conclusions about pastors and churches in general based upon what a few jokers like this pair have pulled. If these charges are true, they disgust me because they not only are wrong, but they give many the excuse to write of all christians, pastors and churches as money-hungry machines.
I am on the board of a church with a relatively large budget, but our board is strong and would never let the gifts of the congregation be used in such lavish means, or allow a pastor to pull anything close to what this pair did. Unfortunately, some high-profile pastors like these have a cult of personality that attracts congregants that are too willing to let a pastor go unchecked and basic internal controls be ignored.

I agree that there are troublesome individuals who abuse the system. But, that said, let's also remember that the average pastor, who isn't running a multimillion dollar organization is typically paid about what the average person in the church makes. If you pastor a church with bankers who are giving members, the pastor will probably make about what a banker makes. Pastors of smaller churches make far less. Moreover, while the church's income is tax exempt, the pastor's income is not. In fact, he pays self-employment tax wherein he pays both his and the employers portion of his tax and social security. So, while there are individuals out there taking advantage of others and the law. It's inaccurate and unfair to lump all religious employees in with them.

Look, not all pastors or evangelists are thieves. I think that's actually the exception to the rule. No one is perfect but most are god-honoring men and women who strive for integrity. (And most work far outside the spotlight and fame of TV.) Rick Warren, who pastors Saddleback Chuch and wrote The Purpose Driven Life - the best selling non-fiction book in history - actually gives away 90% of the proceeds from the book to charities. Hardly the actions of a man who is out to fleece the flock. Billy Graham has led a life of integrity. They are not alone.

If there is corruption then it must be exposed and those who lie and decieve in the name of God should be called to account. And God will also judge them for their actions. But it's just as wrong to paint everyone with the same brush - stereotyping any group of people is always foolish and ignorant. Any group or organization made up of human beings will always find some who are bad apples; unfortunately the church is no exception.

Were it not for the exemption, it would be none of our business who gave what to whom, except that those who receive would be obligated to report the income and expenses, just like the rest of us. I am a pastor who does not take a salary. I believe in using the media to "reach people where they are". Do not cast all the men and women of God who use the media to touch the lives of those who dont attend a church. Being a pastor is hard work and the Bible says the man and woman of God should be cared for. (Not in the form of a Bentley) Howeve a good pastor should be able to apply the principles of the Bible to prosper. He should be able to do as Jesus. He or she should be able to take little and make much as an example to the hard working members. Many of you use the few examples of dishonest preachers to wash your hands of faith. Do not disregard the hard work of the pastor who counsels couples, cares for the grieved and guides young people because a few have fallen to temptation.

I am all for a minister or preacher earning an income, but there comes a point to where there is an "exessive amount" of the church members tithing that is squandered and misused for wealth & luxury that should be used for spreading the Gospel of Christ.

It almost reminds me of Luke 19 when Christ went into the temple and began beating the merchants and money changers stating "My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves".

Why is it that every other profession on the planet is allowed to prosper, except that of the priest. If there is any breaking of the law, they should be dealt with. Aside from that these ministers should be left alone with whatever salary they are blessed with. Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with asking individuals for an offering, it's 100% Biblical. It's Biblical to sell a home and donate any portion or all. It's Biblical to sow a seed in faith, believing God for a harvest.

About 40 years ago I was listening to an evangelist on the radio asking for donations if you were so poor that you could not donate then he wanted you to send in your green stamps. I think that if I want to give my pastor all my money, it's nobody elses business. Why don't they go hard on shopping malls and stores? Millions of Americans "waste" their money and go into debt because of credit cards, why don't we do something about that? Or how about this huge mortgage crisis? I mean I saw that one coming 4 years ago, when every mortgage company was offering me no money down loans and my credit score wasn't even 500 and I had a judgement. Maybe if they had been sending some letters to these companies we wouldn't be arguing about whether to help out a bunch of people who were "duped" into giving all their money to mortgage companies in exchange for a house that they no longer have.

I agree that much of what goes on in church is big, for-profit business. Nevertheless, I think that many people give out of a sense of community and charity. I sympathize with them. Their motivation for giving is to serve God. Yet, these middle men have come between them and the God they serve and betrayed their trust. I do not think that 501(c)(3)s should be forced to pay taxes for charitable contributions, but I do think that churches need to realize the legal and ethical limits of tax-free status and stop crossing the line. As for the televangelists who have plundered the faithful for years, they belong in prison.

Rule of thumb for belonging to any non-profit organization:

If you pay dues (or tithe, in the case of churches), you have a right to see where the money goes. Ask for a copy of the budget.

If you don't agree with the way the money is being used, you have the option to either 1) get involved in the planning/decision-making process and help steer the movements of the organization's spending, or 2) quit or do not choose to join the organization.

Above all, don't sit there and claim ignorence - "They told us to tithe so we did, we don't want to be cursed by God!" What a bad excuse that is. Every single one of us has freedom in this country - I have no patience for people who squander their earnings and freedom by blaming someone else for their own actions.

Come on! People I can’t believe some of the comments I am reading. The majority of these ministries fully comply with the IRS regulations as they stand. Yes, there ought to be some oversight to make certain they are doing what they say there doing outside of that. Let them continue to build character, morals, compassion, love, and responsibility in which is so needed in America. If it were not for the churches scores of the jobless, fatherless, homeless would not have a place to go. Many of the victims of natural disaster, family disaster, & Corporate disaster would not have a place be healed, mentally, physical and emotionally. If we would only learn to live like an advance society we would not need churches. Please do not think that all ministers of god are like this. Joel Osteen has never asked for one cent during his TV shows. He has written books and works hard for his money. His father was also a minister and followed the same guidlines that his son Joel does. My wife and I send money to their ministry because he uplifts us and without him being in our lives we have a hard time understanding the Bible as it is written. Our children watch him every week as well and have become more aware of their purpose they are here. The comments so far tell more about the writers than televangelists and show some obvious biases. That there are televangelists whom I consider scam artists I will not deny. But when I red this, my first reaction had to do with the Senators and their use of power.

If you look back in history, you will find most publicly charged Congressional hearings are more about the politics of self-promotion than any work envisioned by the Constitution for Congress. And many such hearings are intended to be public trials that acted more like kangaroo courts. The recent hearings about drugs in sports are a good example because at no time was there the slightest thought to actually framing any legislation that might address the situation. In my mind there was never any such possibility as the drugs in question were already outlawed.

So, should the Congress act as a sort of Star Chamber? Or does this distort the rightful powers and balances set forth in the Constitution?

As for sticking it to the scam artists, remember the Bakers and how they were brought down through the legal process as it was meant to work.

I go to a small church in a rural area. We pay the pastor a very small housing allowance and he and his wife tithe back more than half of that amount from her salary--she works at a hospital. When our tiny church budget has money left over after expenses, we help a family in the community (they don't necessarily have to be a member of our church) with groceries or medicine. We don't believe in a 'prosperity' doctrine as much as a sharing doctrine. We don't give to get, we give because we trust God to provide for our needs, but not necessarily all our wants. We've never been disappointed in that faith.

While I agree that we should have a separation of church and state as guaranteed by the constitution, times are now such that we need to have a clearer definition of what constitutes a religion or church for tax purposes. I may not have a great walk with god, but some of these comments insult me and anyone else who wants to do right. The church I go to the pastor quit a higher paying job to become a pastor full time. He has admitted many times that he has faults and always seeks to improve himself. He has also admitted that he is human as well and it should not stop anyone who wants to have a relationship with God. If you people have seen his vehicles, they are used. So he lives by trusting God. One of the reasons I don't watch these guys on TV or go to any of their special events is that I see what looks like expensive rings on their fingers other than their wedding bands. This story is clearly one sided. Any good and descent journalistic work would give room for the other side even when the other side does not want to speak to them. Of course they would not especially considering the tone, assumption and approach of the writer. Typical example, the book of Malachi 3:6-12 indicates that the Lord says we've robbed Him if we do not pay our tithes. The writer should have elaborated on why people pay tithes. If I don't believe in tithes then of course I'm not compelled to pay. No one places a gun to ones head to demand money from them. This is religion and a matter of faith. If you do not believe in it, then don't join and don't give. Simple! This does not mean that there are not crooks in sheep's clothing. In which case, I advocate the inquiry but let's be fair. Wherever there is money to be made, you will find greedy people. And it shouldn't be surprising to find hypocrites in the church--they are in every business.
However, I don't agree that churches should be taxed. Megachurches are relatively few and are the minority. Most of the churches in the U.S. are small, with less than 200 members. Many of those are lead by Pastors who hold down full-time jobs, because God is their passion, not their occupation.

It is the same as buying from Anthony Robbins or Zig Ziglar. Sure, she has a religious twist to it, but I like that and feel good when I listen to her and motivated to change my life for the better. Her books/tapes helped me out of a really bad relationship, so I feel I owe her to say that I stand by her.

The intent of Churches originally being tax exempt was due to their efforts to serve the public. The focus of the Church should be one of SERVICE. Well, over time the only ones being served has been the PREACHERS! Those congregants in most cases will neer even see a financial statement. In fact if they ask persistently about seeing the statement they probably will be prayed out of the Church. The Church no longer provides service for the public. they just need the public to pay the mortgage on the Mega church, Rolls Royce's, million dollar mansions, and all the relatives of the pastor who needs a job. How many of these same folk question what or where the icons, and superstars get their money to blow on drugs, sex, and all kinds of obsenities. I must say that I agree with many of the statements here, BUT, I am a youth pastor here in PA and God's word says that we are to give tithes and offerings and that when we don't we are robbing God. How do all you people think the church survives. Money doesn't just float down from the sky to pay the electric bill, the water bill, the heating bill, phone bill and to support staff if they are paid. God is a just God and if all these tv evangelists are doing wrong then, we should be praying for them to come back to what God has directed them to do and that is to spread the gospel of Jesus as the word tells us all to. Our church is small and we get several phone calls from those that say they are in need of help and we have caught many calling all the local churches just to see what they can get and not to meet needs but, their wants. There is always two sides to every story and if I was all of you I would look for the only one that is right and that is God's. No one is ever forced to give. That is a choice and that is between you and God. But, remember that while we are living in a world that is so desperate for a feel good moment, highs and lows. That there are churches that are closing and in there place that once holy sacred place is now becoming a bar/night club.

I don't like these televangelists or their theology one bit. But, congress makes laws and the executive branch enforces them. If the tax code needs changed, that's the Senate's job. If the tax code needs enforced, that's the IRS's job.

I just don't trust politicians to haul religious groups in and question the validity of their doctrine. Not compatible with the First Amendment.

Again, I don't support these ministers or their churches. But, I do support the Constitution and the principle of religious freedom.

I prefer to donate to charities I am personally involved with - animal rescue. I know where my $ goes and see the results.

These ministers like Benny Hinn and Kenneth Copeland are true leaders of the Word of God. God does want us to prosper and yes, it says in the Bible that we are to give monetary offerings to the church. Kenneth Copeland has dedicated his life to God and through his ministry thousands and thousands of people have come to know God. Not once have I seen Kenneth Copeland or any of his associates beg for money or tell you that you will "go to hell" if you don't give money to the church. Its always "if you would like to make a donation..." He deserves every penny. Even the Constitution of the United States indicates freedom of religion and the "separation of church and State". The government needs to stay out of it.

I'm not about to condemn any of the minister's in the article. They do need to comply with what the government asks though, as Jesus said "give unto Caesar what is Caesar's..."

He also said give, and it will be given back to you, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. This, along with many similar passages from both the New AND Old testaments directly state that God wants His followers to be prosperous in not only finances, but also in health, wisdom, and especially spiritual health and gifting. While in this thought though, we must learn as Paul to be content when in overflow as well as in want.

Many here have said things that make it seem like Pastor's should be among the most poor in the world, and if they drive a nice car then they're going to hell...If you're a Christian, look at yourself in the same light because God is no respecter of persons. If they can't be allowed enough to be "wealthy," neither can you.

Being a wealthy minister in and of itself is NOT wrong. When Jesus said it is harder for a rich man to get into heaven than to get through the eye of a needle, He didn't say it was impossible. It was more of a warning to avoid the love of money. When a minister, or anyone claiming to follow the gospel of Christ for that matter, is blessed with wealth they need to be very cautious with how they use it, and how much they let their money control them instead of them controlling their money. Many times it's stated in the Bible to give to the poor. In my opinion, keep enough to live comfortably and have a few nice toys - and give the rest to people or churches that need it.

That's my $.02.

Just don't be too quick to judge, especially if you don't know first hand what is going on. Much of what we hear in the media is rumor or somehow distorted.

BUT - If any of these ministers are found to be embezzling or abusing the finances given to their church by God's people, well...I'll leave that up to God & the U.S. Government.
