--"women's underwear placed over his head and bra placed over his clothing"

--"female interrogator massaging his back and neck region over his clothing"

--"showing him pictures of scantily clothed women"

--"forced physical training"

It is really disappointing to read all of your comments. it makes me sad as an American to have you as my fellow countrymen and countrywomen. This is about basic human dignity, and certain rules that all humans agree to. This is not how we act. Our founding fathers would lump you all in with the Church/State Apparatus that we fled from initially when we founded this country. But just because you all are in power, you have no problems relaxing rules that don't affect you. But at one time we were subject to such kangaroo court sheenanigans and endless torture in the name of the Church/King of England. Freedom has a high cost, and we should look at the total cost (not just dollars, but erosions of basic liberties (habeas corpus anyone?), total loss of human life, loss of world standing et al) and compare it and seriously ask ourselves is freedom worth 3000+ lives. I do not advocate allowing these people to go free, but the fact that we have wasted away 200+ yrs of experience, wisdom, and reserve to get caught up in propoganda inspired fear, well it is sad, and truly UN-American. America is about dissent, and about standing up for all people, not just the ones we like. Never forget that if you don't speak up now, no one will be left to speak up for you. Study your history, learn its lessons and try not to repeat its mistakes. We should know better, and shame on all of you.

The use of "harsh interrogation techniques" (aka torture) has been proven time and again to be an ineffective method of intelligence gathering, does nothing to deter future attacks, and puts our own military personnel at high risk of treatment-in-kind if captured on foreign soil.

For crying out loud!!! I am so sick of hearing about how "harsh" we treated those terrorist prisoners. I think the military personel that were reprimanded and/or lost their jobs (along with their pension-I'm sure) were treated much more harshly than this second rate person. Wow. With all the retribution bloodlust being vented here, it seems as if almost everyone is missing the real point:

Al-Qahtani is only *suspected* of being the 20th hijacker. There is no proof he had anything to do with it. But, since he is merely considered to be a terrorist, he has no rights and the administration is free to subject him to whatever treatment they'd like, for however long they please... and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

This is how the "bad guys" treat their prisoners.

As a nation, we are supposed to be better than this.

Unfortunately, what many seem to forget is that this treatment by our government is not limited to people of Muslim descent. The President could take anyone -- U.S. citizens, good ol' hard-working Americans -- and say "I consider that person an enemy combatant." POOF. That person would disappear, whisked away to one of our many secret prisons, treated harshly, tortured, with no hope of release, no recourse of law (no writ of habeas corpus), no word to their family what's become of them, nothing.

This is something that, under present law, can happen TODAY.

And if you say, "Well, I don't do anything wrong -- I'm no terrorist. I've got nothing to worry about," you're missing the point. First of all, how can you consider yourself an American if you support such un-Democratic policy?

Second, you don't NEED to have done anything wrong -- after all, there's no crime needed other than (for whatever reason) your being classified as an enemy combatant... and there's NO legal recourse through which you'll get the chance to prove your innocence. All you can do is wait and hope for your release.

We need to make things right. Arbitrarily punishing people because they "look" or "seem" like terrorists merely puts more blood on our hands, but it goes nowhere toward solving the problem or delivering justice.

Under the current system, LOTS of punishment is being meted out... but we have no idea if any justice is being served. Nor will we until we re-embrace the Geneva Conventions.

Notwithstanding all but one of the comments above, there are Americans who do not operate on the basis of bloodlust and seek to have the US conform to its legal obligations.

In particular, those are our uniformed Judge Advocate Generals who consistently objected to these methods being used as they violate the Geneva Conventions and other international and domestic US law such as the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The United States has undertaken that either as POW's, security detainees or civilians these persons are not to be treated in this way when captured.

The sarcasm of many of the comments really does a disservice to nearly 150 years of military law history from the Lieber Code created under Lincoln in the civil war and other efforts around the world to make sure that persons who are captured are not tortured or treated cruelly, inhumanely or in a degrading manner. This is an important ethos for the military - a guy here in Ohio just got his Purple Heart for being downed in WWII in Austria - the guy who saved him from the Austrian lynch mob was a Nazi soldier applying the laws of war.

No one is asking that we love our enemies, but rather that we act like the civilized nation we profess to be. Otherwise, we are barbarians.

Plain and simple: these are war crimes when committed on any detainees by any detaining authority and we should prosecute the lawyers (Yoo, Addington, Haynes, Bybee and the rest of them) who put this in place and the National Security Principals who authorized this.

Did anyone notice how the list was almost identical to what we saw in the pictures from Abu Ghraib? This was an official and illegal policy and criminal to have happen. Shame on us for not living up to our standards. Keep our honor clean.

One writer above states,"No doubt that terrorism is a horrible darkness". That much is obvious. Comments by the cheerleaders for inhumane, cruel and unusual punishment make it equally obvious that we as a nation have been sucked into that darkness. To the degree that we approve of torture and espouse fear and hate; to that same degree have the "terrorists" won.

When career FBI agents turn away from "interrogations" in disgust, that ought to give you a clue that something is indeed very wrong.

I have killed enemy soldiers "in service to my country". I have had enemy POW's under my control. I have been wounded in combat and I have been covered in the blood of my dead friends. None of these experiences justifies torturing or treating another human being as sub-human, no matter what his crime.

Plain and simple: The "interrogators" at GITMO and elsewhere, and those that authorize and condone their actions, are criminals and unworthy to wear the uniform of my country or to hold public office in the United States. Their actions reflect the ugliest, darkest side of mankind.

This is supposed to be America. For the love of God (that's right) what have we become?

No matter what this man apparently or allegedly did or tried to do, the interrogations were wrong and illegal. I'm skeptical these interrogations even led to any information. We shouldn't assume anything valuable came out of these interrogations.
There are other methods that are effective, legal, and defensible to extract information. During World War II, interrogators got Nazis to provide information without tortuting them.

Moreover, there's a risk in getting the wrong information from people who will tell the interrogator whatever they want to hear just to avoid the abuse.

You know what, if it came right down to it, I wouldn't care if they slowly cut off his body parts to prevent the slaughter of innocent men, women, and children. He is a terrorist who thinks it is alright to kill innocents to reach his irrationally driven goals. This is war! You do what you have to in order to protect innocent lives from his kind, or you will die instead, or maybe just your loved ones will die. Get over it. He is still better off than the kids who lost their parents just because they went to work that day. Some things are worth fighting for, and do justify the horrible actions necessary to prevent the further losses of innocent life by cowards that wage war on civilians. Maybe you would take some moral high ground and surrender the lives of the innocent to show how "GOOD" we are. Wow, state-sanctioned and state-conducted "investigatory" torture. Someone even described forced hypothermia as "mild" torture...Detainees at Abu Ghraib died from these tactics, folks. Stress positions cause heart attacks -- try assuming a stress position for 10+hours at a time before claiming it's mild. Then picture someone forcing your cousin, father, or uncle to do that naked. Christ, I'm pro-death penalty & even have a bit of vigilante-ism in my gut, but this really creeps me out.

I don't understand how Americans have become a nation of frightened, defensive, passive followers of their terrorist-style government. You'd think that a people who struggled for freedom from state oppression, and even started a civil war to stop human trafficking would have a sense of perspective.

One aspect of this report I'm guessing is that these outrages acts is that they are unconstitutional? Well in the past several years we have conveniently forgotten that the founding fathers wrote the constitution in reference to the social contract created by John Locke. The founding fathers knew its value but our interpretation over the years has watered it down for the purpose of twisting to our own needs setting precedents that are hard to break. But, the social contract is plain enough. When one refuses to uphold the contract by intentionally breaking the laws of a society or corupting those laws in a way that creates havoc, hurt or death, then they have broken the contract and are no longer able to be protected by the contract. As a memeber of the Armed Forces, I understand both sides of the story. The treatment was rough, demeaning, unfair, but the lose of lives on that September day was beyond compare.

On one side of the coin we have a human, flesh and blood, with a family somewhere, put through some rough treatment for info he may or may not have.

On the other we have a large number of people who will never come home, never talk to their kids, their mothers, their loved ones, put through hell for God knows what reason other then stupidity on the terrorists part.

The means on both sides do not justify the end result. This war will end, but only when man starts to understand that we all are different and that we can co-exist. The terrorists are wrong, the government can be wrong, but when will we all sit down and make it right???? The world is talking and no one is listening, lack of understanding is killing us more and more everyday.

I'm tired, my brothers and sisters in arms are tired, but we keep fighting because freedom isn't free. I only pray that one day we stop and learn to love our neighbors. Then I would be out of a job.

I understand the idea of "unbiased" journalism but what I don't understand is the obvious lack of support of our soldiers even if you do not support the war. 9/11 alone killed thousands and it was fodder for the media.

Everyone please do this exercise before your next post, it may make a difference. Picture being a soldier who is on a convoy to help out the local population only to be engulfed in the heat and flame of hot liquid metal blasting through the cabin of your vehicle. The soldier gasps for breath but only inhales searing heat which essentially burns their throat and lungs causing them to suffocate as their skin literally melts from the bone while they are being burned alive. All the while a family member (because we soldiers are all family out there) stands by screaming and crying as they defend the remainder of their brothers and sisters in arms amidst explosions, rockets and gunfire. Then the blackened, charred body is pulled from the wreckage, unidentifiable, save for dog tags (if they are not melted as well) which are permenantly embedded in the leftover flesh of this selfless warrior. Then last but not least....picture this as your daughter, your wife, your husband, your father or son etc. even if they are not soldiers. Please close your eyes and see them then multiply this situation but the hundreds or even thousands. We fight as soldiers are supposed to. Support us or simply be quiet as we do not need nor wish for your negativity as we face death daily for our country. We are people too. Support the Soldier.

It sounds like we are becoming what we are fighting judging from the positive responses. Not one person was in imminent danger when this person was interrogated. We are on a slippery slope now. Today these techniques and doing it to one person seems fine to most people. What is it going to be in the near future? The wheel? The Iron Maiden? Burning at the Stake? We do it to one, let's do it to a 100, a 1000 or all of them! Maybe a few of them die in the process. Or best yet, maybe we should just cut to the chase and consider all of 'them', 'terrorists' and set up concentration camps to commit genocide. Them or us right? As long as we do it, well, it is just right? This would differentiate us from the terrorists, how again? How are we morally so superior that we can use these techniques? It doesn't take that much to be accused for something you didn't do just look at all the cases of 'informants' and 'no knock' search warrants. In other words it could be you next. Someone calls an anonymous 800 number and says you are a conspirator, your skin is a little brown you might be Arab. Bang, no rights at all! Or even if you are in the military, you don't like your platoon leader so instead of the Vietnam 'fragging' days you simply pass on anonymous information your LT is conspiring with the enemy. I have killed enemy soldiers "in service to my country". I have had enemy POW's under my control. I have been wounded in combat and I have been covered in the blood of my dead friends. None of these experiences justifies torturing or treating another human being as sub-human, no matter what his crime.

Plain and simple: The "interrogators" using torture at GITMO and elsewhere, and those that authorize and condone their actions, are criminals and unworthy to wear the uniform of my country or to hold public office in the United States. I'm not sure whose comments are more humorous--the people who are saying that the government knocked down the buildings, or the liberals who are having trouble looking in the mirror because their honor is stained that a "suspect" (Im sure Mohammed Atta was just a drinking buddy getting ready to show him around Florida) was forced to listen to loud music.

Hey conspiracy idiots--if the US Govt cant keep from the press that they put some underwear on the heads of some terrorists at super secret locations, why the heck do you think they could keep quiet 9/11. I'm pretty sure the NY Times would have loved that scoop.

Didn't 39 of these "suspects" who were found to be "innocent" during these military tribunals head over to Iraq right afterwards and blow up Iraqi citizens and US troops? Maybe we should've done a bit better than dog leashes and "20-hour" interrogations (gasp! says the liberal).

To the liberal who says that this horribe treatment (showing him pictures of the bra section in the Sears catalog) prob led to them blowing themselves up in Iraq, why dont you head to Western Pakistan and see how the local taliban chief interrogates you?

For all of you people who are not scrutinizing the interrogation tactics of the abovementioned: Scrutiny is GOOD. Not to overly criticize the FBI but to scrutinize a little....because as of Jan. 2008, 8 + million US Citizens have been deemed as a potential threat to national security. Sad to day the Patriot Act has been amended to include "domestic" terrorists. Theres only 300million of us. There's a possibility that YOU CAN BE one of those DETAINED AND INTERROGATED for whatever reason. In times of crisis various religious organization/groups have been deemed threats to national security. WHAT GOES AROUND MAY COME BACK AROUND ONE DAY.

Sometimes i really cant believe the crap that comes out of our mouths. If your not an amercan citizen then you do not have the same rights. We are not givin the rights of a foreign country when americans are prosecuted, so why should we apply laws to foreign nationals. The treatment should fit the crime. If you plan to kill thousands of our people then any means we deem apropriate should be used. Grow up people, freedom isnt free.

Please tell if I am Un-American to think this way. I love the land I was born on. I love the freedom we have here. I like the people I live around. BUT, I don't always agree with America. The people who raised me told me to take care of yourself and mind your own business. Don't worry about what other people are doing. Respect others and don't offend anyone for what they believe in. Most of the crimes we are charging these guys with are crimes that resulted from things we have done in the past but just not ever charged with. Osama say it best in one of his letters/video. He attacked the World Trade Center because we attacked a building of his first. You hit me, I'll hit you back. And I am jealous sometimes of the people from secluded lands for their holy-ness. Here in America, we are constantly exposed to unclean and unholy thoughts and actions. I know we are responsible for our own actions and our choice to live here but there is NO REASON to do that to another man in order to mock him or get a confession. I think some of the interrogators will find it hard to stand before God and tell him what they have done.

Absurd! These and the more "harsh" techniques the U.S. uses (siccing guard dogs on prisoners, waterboarding, etc...) in its "War on Terror" are in direct violation of the Geneva Convention (read all the Protocols). You probably think that its ok for the preservation of our country, but keep in mind our servicemen around the world these tactics endanger. If we ever get into a "tussle" with China, Russia, or whoever, I do not want my sons, if wounded/ captured, to be mistreated because the other side believes our country will mistreat their captured soldiers. You can't have it both ways. And if you don't want to call these people enemy combantants, then they would fall under International Human Rights. We are supposed to be the Cradle of Democracy and Human Rights and an example for all other nations to follow. What's next, death squads patrolling our streets at night? Maybe Americans need to take a lesson from Nazi Germany- they voluntarily gave away their rights for the sake of national security and look what happened with Hitler. "No", you say, "this is America, we are not like that." You already approve torture, illegal wiretaps, and invasion of your privacy. What's next? You all worry about our security from the terrorists, but many of you don't have a problem with the +12 million illegal aliens crossing our border in the south at will. We are a strange people!

The detainees at Gitmo do not undergo torture. Terrorists know this well and enjoy the bleeding heart logic, but do not respect it.
The whiners care more about ideology than reality.
Terrorists intend to kill and maim as many innocents as possible. The crime of terrorism and murder weighs on the backs of those who cause it or are involved in it. To even consider this nation in the same breath with terrorists is wholly beyond reason. We have been forced to root out terrorism. To do this may not always be pleasant. It will take strong, devoted, rational people to defend this country; whiners won't make it.
