Obama film features faux Oval Office

The normally voluble Obama campaign won't answer a simple question: Where did the campaign film the office shots of Sen. Obama that were featured in last night's half-hour infomercial?

Granted, America's national security doesn't hinge on the response.

But it is an interesting parlor game, nonetheless, that has captivated some former White House image makers today.

The Obama office, as seen below in a screen grab from last night's film, is stately and projects a certain casual elegance.

It also happens to give off a distinct White House vibe. It's Oval Officey, as Stephen Colbert might say.

The similarities include the gold-colored drapes, the prominent American flags and vertical, nearly floor-to-ceiling windows.

Then there are the desks.

In the real Oval Office, the Resolute Desk commands center stage. Presented by Queen Victoria to President Rutherford Hayes in 1880, the Resolute Desk is two-toned on top, and ringed with a three-inch border of light-colored wood. The Obama desk is two-toned, too, with a three-inch border of dark wood on top.

A handsome wooden credenza is positioned behind the Obama desk, right under the windows. The Oval Office layout is identical, right down to the tasteful framed family photos on top of the wooden credenza under the windows.

A spokesman for Obama offered a terse "No comment" in an email to NBC. The film's director, Davis Guggenheim, did not reply to an email.

We showed the Obama office pictures to three experts, all of whom agree that the Obama campaign intentionally used an Oval Office look and feel to make the Democractic contender appear more presidential.

The experts weigh in
Veteran Hollywood designer Ken Hardy spent seven years as the production designer for the "West Wing" television series, and spent hours taking notes inside the actual Oval Office. He designed the replica Oval Office for the "West Wing," and knows a thing or two about faux sets. "This was definitely set up to suggest the Oval Office," Hardy said. "The layout was exactly what's used by the president in the Oval Office."

Hardy said that the filmmakers "warmed up" the room with wood paneling and soft lighting to make it look "homier and a little less regal." But he said the room is "definitely derivative" and "seems like a set to me."

Josh King worked for President Clinton as the Director of Production for Presidential Events, and for five years was responsible for creating the visual imagery behind President Clinton in settings all over the world. King said he was impressed by the mastery of the Obama film, "which sent all these visual cues to help voters imagine Obama in the Oval Office." King said the soft lighting, fluid camera moves, music and Oval-Office look all worked in unison.

The office setting sent a visual "suggestion" to undecided voters, King said. "It said 'authority, poise, calm.' It basically said, 'He's sitting here and wants to invite Americans into his chambers' and is in command as a leader.

Republican media consultant Alex Castellanos said the lookalike White House office was undoubtedly a set. "Of course that was their intent. There's no office sitting around with an American flag [positioned] like that," he said.

Castellanos said the campaign's intent was to help undecided voters imagine Obama in the Oval Office, and to project the Democratic candidate as a steady choice. "The Oval Office set made Barack Obama look safe," he said. "Obama put his arm around our shoulder and said, 'It's gonna be alright.' "

Castellanos has served as a media consultant to seven U.S. presidential campaigns, and he has served on the John McCain for President Ad Council. He tipped his hat to the Obama infomercial, and said it was effective political advertising. "Give the campaign team an 'A,' he said. "There's a risk that sometimes you buy a pair of shoes and they're too big. But not if you can fill them. Obama filled them. I thought he looked comfortable in that setting."

A GOP spokesman was less giving.

“While Barack Obama seems to enjoy playing president, it takes very different qualities to actually do the job," said Republican National Committee spokesman Danny Diaz. "Time and again, Obama has demonstrated theatrical flourishes, yet failed to lead or clearly and honestly articulate his stances on issues.  At the end of the day, the American people will support the candidate that has the experience and background to serve as president, as opposed to the candidate that likes to pretend he’s one.”

Comments

Maybe it's intended to be a copy, or maybe it isn't. At the end of the day does anyone really give a hoot?
Is the view out that window of Tony Rezko's house next door or is that the park where he hangs out with William Ayres? Lets hope he spends his 4 years in office pretending to be president rather than implementing the awful policies he has.
Where would you have had Mr. Obama film his message? And what background do you think Mr. McCain would have used?
I thought Obama looked like he had invited us into his own office back in Illinois.  Doesn't every Senator have an American flag in the office?  I've seen one in every Senator's DC office I've ever visited.
Find a relevant issue to talk about. Here's one: There are too many homes without people, and there are too many people without homes. Who's going to do something about it?
This past week Ch. 7 KTVB in Boise presented "debates" between the Democratic and Republican candidates for the House and the Senate.  I, for one was dismayed that they chose to film the Republican candidates with Cherry Wood office settings, including the bookcases and desks but projected the Democratic candidates with harsh lighting and background.  This before the Obama infomercials.  As an NBC affiliate it does not seem to represent what I would suggest is a fairness doctrine which we feel those that deliver news and a platform of fairness when presenting a platform for presentation of your positions  to the candidates of the respective parties and/or indapendents seeking support!
This is a ridiculous article.  He obviously would do the office shot in an executive office setting.  I have been in a number of U.S. government executive offices and they look similar to the one that Barack Obama used.  Where do you think he should have been, in a government employee cubicle????
To be perfectly honest, I did not notice that the backdrop looked like the Oval Office.  Now that I read the article and compared the pictures, I can say they have a lot in common.  I am sure there are many other American's out there that didn't notice either.  Come Election Day, hopefully we as American's will make the right choice.  Just because you dress, act, and talk like a President doesn't automatically make you one.  Come next Tuesday we will see if Obama makes it to the real Oval Office.
With all due respect to the "experts", I just don't see the Oval Office similarities, other than they both appear to be "offices." In fact, when i saw the video before I heard the speculation about the similarities, I thought they were going for a Camp David look. It appears more rustic and rural to me.
"... the American people will support the candidate that has the experience and background to serve as president, as opposed to the candidate that likes to pretend he’s one.”

Numerous polls show that more American people are supporting Obama.  I wonder what this nameless GOP spokesman is *really* saying.
Pretty funny. I guess the Obamanites don't realize how all their knock-off Presidential junk is distasteful to people who actually respect our country. I hope Sen. Obama will be able to take his fake seal, fake office, and so forth home with him if he loses. Then he can continue to play "dress-up" pretend games..
mccain woulda used an aircraft carrier because by gum being a fighter pilot on one has perpared him to be president doncha know!
This is your deep background investigation? Are you kidding me?  With everyone's eyes on serious election litigation even prior to the election- this is what you are investigating?  You have to be joking! Or did you receive a avalanche of viewers demanding you investigate 'Office-gate'?  We are not amused.
Over the top. Mr. Obama should have had on his "Superman" costume, after all, it is Holloween time and they are selling his mask in the stores. Who would have guessed?

I think it was necessary, as voters, especially undecided voters needed to see for themselves: Barack Obama in the Oval Office.

The question isn't whether or not it was deliberate, the question is, did the undecided voters watching feel comfortable with what they saw? Can they be at ease with Obama in the Oval Office?

The imagery and intent was to help those undecided voters jump over from their unease to acceptance.
It's nice to know that someone still has the time for "parlor games", especially over something as silly as this.

Perhaps if I weren't to distracted about how I'm going to make rent, pay insurance and utilities, keep gas in the car and hope that I have enough to make the upcoming holidays somewhat bearable. I too could be just as blasé when it comes down to what my future president plans to do to pull us out of W's ditch.
"At the end of the day, the American people will support the candidate that has the experience and background to serve as president"  Just like they did with "W" eh?
Fake office, fake promises, fake, fake, fake.  What else is there to say?
Just another Obama game.  His campaign has no substance, only endlesslyspeaking of "sharing the wealth".  A HANDOUT AND NOT A HANDUP.  Something those who DON'T want to work like to hear. Something those of us who DO work DON'T like to hear!!!!

He will be no better at being President than he has been as a Senator.  The only thing he seems to do well at is getting books published about himself.  While as Senator he has not been author to any bills presented but has managed to write two books about himself.  He is very self-serving!

Wake up people, it's not too late.  OBAMA IS ABOUT HIMSELF AND NOT ABOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OR OUR COUNTRY.  Pay attention to what he is REALLY saying and what is missing from those comments.

Hubub about a set used in a film is simply ridiculous!!!! Since when is "oval officey" off limits?  What the heck does it matter?  Yea, a good director would have set the thing in such a way  that the man looks convincingly presidential.  Similar sets have been used in a multitude of movies.  I have yet to hear of a law making it off limits to use an inference of a certain setting in an ad.  As I recall, john Mccain's own commercials have had him in all sorts of official looking "settings" - to be honest i haven't watched his drivel close enough to be able to list the details.  But seriously, is the SETTING in a film anything we all ought to be concerned about?  We have much bigger issues at stake than that in this election!
This is like an episode of 24.  Can someone just buy the presidency? Who is this guy?  No military service, no experience, and friends who believe in bombing those who don't agree with them.  Just because he dresses nice, gives dramatic speaches and infomercials does not make him a qualified president.  $600 million of untraceable donations! Use it to buy healthcare for Americans instead of infomercials and maybe we'll believe your message of change Obama.
Why the fuss? Does this really need to be debated? The aforementioned office/scene fit and flowed with the overall message Obama was trying to convey. I say congratulations to him for the campaign that he has run, including this piece.  I watched it from the local campaign headquarters, surrounded by fellow supporters and folks who happened to have dropped in. There was a lot of emotion in that room, yet not one person mentioned anything about the desk, the office - we were simply moved by watching the person we collectively support and believe in. It simply didn't occur to any one present. Our energy is better spent on getting Obama elected than on dissecting and digressing.
We have real concerns over Obama and his attempt to use a simulated whitehouse setting is sending up red flags with me
Idiots if this was filmed say @holiday Inn they would say it didn't look Presidential enough
if the Flag was missing they would say He's anti-American Can't win even when you try Lets Hope his next appearance is from the REAL OVAL OFFICE
<<Where would you have had Mr. Obama film his message? And what background do you think Mr. McCain would have used? >>

How about a real place instead of a pretend place?
Not necessarily the house that Tony Rezko lives, but the office buildings of the Keating Five.  I'd rather have a pretend president than the one we have now or a George W. Bush clone.
How many million's was this again?  The man's ego is enormous.  Maybe he should have donated a few dollars to the families he pointed out were hurting.
since when has the oval office resembled a woodsy cabin???
In a word - PERFECT!!!  That's how he looks in his "faux" office...waiting for Bush to clear out his CRAP in his REAL OFFICE!!!  We welcome you President Obama!!!  God Bless You and God Bless The United States Of America!!!
Come on folks, Obama has what it takes.  He has proven himself throughout his adult life.  Filming in an office, behind a desk, with a flag, of course that is the correct setting for him to speak to the American people about what he would be like as our President.  Who would have done it any diffenent?  I can see him in that setting and I hope, and expect, to see him in the Oval Office soon enough.  Let's get behind him, as he is the best canidate and we are lucky as a country to have a person of his strength, class, and wisedom, running for office.
These "political" messages, and side trips are getting to be more disgusting every day. Exactly WHAT was "wrong" with Mr. Obama's room setting?  Why does it even matter?  It was a tasteful, calm room setting. So he is "taking advantage".  Of WHAT exactly? Someone is running out of excuses.
All that did for me was reinforce how out of place he looks
Yes, it's amazing, the similarities. How could anyone not see that. They both look like rooms, they both have desks (although not nearly the same size), they both have windows (although for some strange reason Obama's has more of them and the oval office's goes to about 4" from the floor, that is close to the 24" in Obama's office) and the credenza's are so similar like they say in the article (although the one in Obama's office is only at least 2' longer) and who ever puts pictures on a credenza? Surely only the White House and the office that Barak Obama used.
I think the Republicans will find fault with Obama anywhere he goes or says that is their nature. They can't win so they want to tear the other person down. What makes the differents where it was taken at, we know for sure it was not the Whitehouse and McCain bunch are tee off because they don't have the money to buy the smear ads or make an ad like this one.
Its pathetic to waste 95 million on tv adds how about giving it to the poor. This guys ego is as big as the oval office.Never has anyone spent more and hogged up more television time in history. If his past doesnt scare you the future should.
It is interesting to see an American flag in the faux office. I wonder if an American flag will be in the Oval Office if he gets elected.
Really - who cares about where it was filmed? Wy aren't they talking more abou this ties to the corrupt Illinois politicians (both Republicans and Democrats) - he didn't get this far without the backing of these people. Look at Illinois right now - our governor is being investigated, our state capitol is at a standstill due to the bad blood between the politicians - is that what the people want in Washington DC -
Obama's message ans setting was perfect.  "He said it like it is".   He's honest and distinguished, like the perfect gentleman he is.  He has run a very decent and up-beat campaign and should be proud of himself for not playing dirty politics like the McCain campaign.  That's exactly what ruined Hilary's chances for presidency.  Dirty campaigning and dirty lies. Go Obama and show them all how a gentleman behaves.
Smart campaigning. I have to give it to Obama, at the beginning of this campaign months ago I never would have guessed he'd actually make it! This infomercial, whatever you think about the candidate, was spectacular! Oval Office feel (I didn't even realize it when I watched!) the "special needs" mother, retires in Florida, dang...I don't think a person could have expected a better 30 minute effort. It went by fast and though not very informative on details, provided a nice "it'll be alright" as noted in the article. Kudos and wow! Great job.
Debbie Nestor- "Come on folks, Obama has what it takes.  He has proven himself throughout his adult life."

Please tell us all exactly what he has done to "prove himself"? While he certainly hasn't done anything to "prove" he has the life experience to be an effective president, he has "proven" that he is arrogant, elitist, audacious, dishonest, and has shown poor judgement. He has also shown a pattern of using questionable relationships with radicals and promoting radical philosophical beliefs until such time as those relationships and philosophies became a hinderence to his ascention. Only then did he denounce and try to distance himself from his radical relationships and beliefs.

The faux oval office set is no different from the majestic greek columns or his rock star style "world tour" or the personal presidential seal he had made or the fact his office chair on his private jet has "President" embossed on the back. It seems Obama suffers from delusions of grandure.

Obama reminds me of a pro wrestler. He gives great scripted speechs and he looks great in scripted events where everyone involved has a vested interest in maintaining the illusion of his greatness. Even if that means they personally have to take a dive.

Before you tell me McCain and/or Palin are just as bad. Let me say, I do not disagree. But I am curious to know just what exactly Obama has done in his life that has you so convinced that he is The One? We can discuss why McCain is not a good choice for president on a different thread.
Come on already!  I watched the film from the beginning. I didn't see the "oval office" from my livingroom TV.   What I did see was a nice warm office,a set of windows and a desk...oh wait...that FLAG!  It it wasn't for the flag I could tell you I've been in people's HOME offices that looked similiar.  Would you have rather had him speak from a script behind a podeum in front of a blue curtain?  This was NOT an oval office "trick" it was a proper setting for a presidential candidate speaking to an audience in a "comfortable" atmosphere.

I am a White Conservative Christian Pro Life Mom who is VOTING FOR OBAMA.  And I am not alone. Becuase he has actually spent time and energy to try to get out real information about what his plans are.   The only thing I've heard from the Republican base has been...don't vote for that guy because...(lie)...(fabrication)...(misinformation)...(lie), nothing about WHY I should vote for McCain/Palin.  Fake?  A word better used to describe McCain's "campaign" than a film set.
I'm particularly interested in how willing people are to dismiss the content of this article as trivial. The way that a candidate's messaging is packaged is just as important, if not more so, to his success than his actual message is. I find this sort of analysis fascinating. Obama's entire campaign has been very conscious of not only the substance, but the style of his messaging - and no matter how much the Right complains about it, it has made a positive difference in the public opinion. We'd all like to think we're smarter than to fall for that - but we're universally wrong.
I seem to remmeber a non-faux "set" for "W" on an aircraft carrier, in full flight suit, with the tag "Mission Accomplished"?
Methinks the Republicans should counter by using special effects to take Obama out of the fake Oval Office and put him at the Podium in the Reverend's Chicago Church.  Remember that even though Obama said he never heard those racist remarks, he also said he went to church 500 times over those years.  500 times and he never heard one of hose bigoted speeches?  Yeah. Right.
I was suprised he didn't ascend into the clouds after that 30 minute ad.  Regarding the office he was using, my first thought when I saw it was that they were trying to emulate the oval office.  Obama talks big, but he doesn't have what it takes to get the job done...unless you want us to become France.
TOO BAD HE DIDN'T HAVE HIS FAUX PRESIDENT SEAL (YOU KNOW THE ONE THAT SAYS THE UNITED STATES OF OBAMA ) OR OBAMA AMERICA THEN PERHAPS FOLKS WOULD SEE THIS GUY IS ALL SMOKE AND MIRRORS AND VOTE McCAIN !
What!?! A US Senator with a window AND a flag in his office!?! Shocked I am, shocked I say!

Seriously, this is the complaint that he used that setting? Are you all just jealous that McCain's campaign couldn't afford to do it???

McCain is running his campaign on empty promises right now because he screwed up when he picked the ditzy criminal for VP
I think Barrack Hussein Obama is suggesting that he will be president no matter what! It is certainly going to be a huge let down when McCain is President. I imagine Obama will go back to playing role as president and dreaming his dreams.I think he is stuck on himself to do such a thing as this anyway. What person in their right mind would act like they are a president before the votes are counted. Why is he doing such crazy things? It looks like he is letting all this go to his head. Like the person who sold everything that they had, their home etc and bought lottery tickets with the money, thinking that they would definately win the big lottery winnings. Guess what. They did not win,but they thougt in their mind that there would be no way that they would not win! wow. If Obama thinks this way, then he has a big problem. He needs to be humble,he needs to be more thankful that he is running for president.Instead,he thinks he has already won the votes. In a way,I feel sorry for him and then again I don't feel compassion for him at all. Hopefully if he loses ,I hope he can go on with his life and realize how bad he made himself look to the public.
