Gov. Palin sold one state plane, used another

Governor Sarah Palin used her state law-enforcement agency's twin-engine plane to travel around Alaska, accounting for about 20 percent of its flying time, according to a document obtained by NBC News. The police plane is a King Air turboprop that is primarily used for police-related missions and search and rescue missions.

The governor's flight usage is laid out in a chart prepared by the Alaska Department of Public Safety and obtained by NBC News under the state's Freedom of Information law. (The governor's flight usage is indicated as "Gov" on the chart, and marked in purple.)

On the campaign trail, Gov. Palin has touted her credentials as a reformer by discussing how she sold off the state's other plane, a jet, and even listed it on eBay. Her predecessor, Gov. Frank Murkowski, had used that plane for travel.

But after Palin's sale of the state jet following her inauguration as governor, the document shows, she did not stop flying on state planes. Gov. Palin used her Public Safety department's prop plane for 110 hours, or 19 percent of its flight time, in 2007 and 2008. The Department of Corrections used it 28 percent of the time, and Alaska Wildlife troopers also used it 28 percent of the time.  A spokesman for the McCain Palin campaign defended the flights, saying the governor needed to use the state Public Safety plane because of the remote geography of Alaska. "For the governor to perform her duty visiting rural communities the use of an aircraft was necessary," a campaign spokesman said.

Tensions over Gov. Palin's use of the plane first became public last month, with the release of an affidavit by her husband, Todd Palin. "It seemed like whenever Sarah needed this plane, it was unavailable," Todd Palin wrote.  The affidavit was submitted to investigators probing why Palin fired her Commissioner of Public Safety, Walt Monegan, earlier this year. That investigative report was released this month.

In his affidavit, Todd Palin complained that the state's police agency was not allowing his wife to use the King Air plane. "We were concerned that the Department of Public Safety was retaliating against Sarah for selling the Murkowski jet that the Department of Public Safety officials enjoyed using," he wrote.

Walt Monegan, in an interview with NBC earlier this month, said the plane was indeed a source of contention. "The governor would be upset if the plane was not at her disposal," he said. "She would say, 'I need the aircraft' and it was at the shop."

John Glass, the current Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, says the plane-usage chart was prepared in response to requests by Sarah Palin's office, after the plane often was not available. "The pie chart was made to show the usage of the airplane."

Glass said since the plane was old, it needed frequent maintenance. He said,"We provided the plane when it was available." He says the plane is primarily intended for law enforcement missions. "The priority is for search and rescue or police related missions and when it is not being used for that it can be used for the governor."

A spokesman for the McCain-Palin campaign said that the state Department of Public Safety had frequently denied Palin use of the plane. "The lack of availability of the plane went beyond reasonable expectations of being down for maintenance," Palin spokesman Taylor Griffin said.

Keith Ashdown of Taxpayers for Common Sense, a non-profit budget watchdog group, says the chart is the first indication of how extensively Palin used the government's plane--despite her frequent boasts about selling the state jet.

"I would say the trouble the governor runs into is the fact that they used the selling of the plane on eBay as part of the reform story. She was trying to get great public relations without giving up flying around on a government plane," Ashdown said.

Update. A spokesman for Gov. Palin emailed us Thursday with an additional comment:

"Aviation is a primary mode of transport in Alaska because much of Alaska is unreachable except by plane. Alaska’s Governor must travel by aircraft to reach the rural communities around the state that she couldn’t otherwise reach.  Palin said the “luxury jet was over the top," but that doesn’t mean that the Governor didn’t need to travel by air.  But, a jet was completely impractical.  Many of Alaska’s rural communities have gravel runways that the jet can’t land on. Why does the state need a jet when they have a less expensive and more practical way to accomplish the same need?

The jet served little practical purpose except as a luxury so Governor Palin got rid of it. The prisoners DPS used the jet to transport could be moved on commercial aircraft. The Governor could use the King Air or commercial air service.  That doesn’t mean that aviation was unnecessary, just that a luxury jet was not. This is a Governor who got rid of the cook at the Governor’s mansion, paired down her security detail, and drove herself to work.  Getting rid of the plane was consistent with everything else she has done to reduce the operating costs of the first family."

What a nothing story! How was she supposed to get to the remote regions of Alaska? Dog sled? Walk?
Typical NBC tactics. An old twin engine King Air is nothing compared to a jet. I will never watch your slanted coverage again.
Yet another example of how Sarah Palin's "reform" is all talk and no action.
I remember Palin saying in her RNC acceptance speech that she "enjoyed driving herself to work." What a gal! The only mention of planes was the jet she "sold on e-Bay. From the very start she's played hard and fast with the truth, and there's no end in sight. Vote Obama/Biden!
Well, if this is indeed the case, why couldnt she just fly in to work everyday instead of sitting on her arse collecting per diem?  Wasnt she the one who said it was over 600 miles to drive to work.  How long would it have taken to get there on an airplane?  Hello?!!!
I can't believe people are so ignorant and blind. Doesn't it make sense that the governor of Alaska would need the use of a plane to get around. Doesn't it also make sense that by selling one plane and sharing the other plane that the Palin saved the state money. How many governor's pay for their own airfare? At least she was trying to cut costs and save the taxpayers money. If there is already a plane that is used part of the time why not share it with the governor so the second plane could be sold?
So now you know why her daughter is 7 monthes pregant at 17, a sure sign that the parenting was lacking and Mrs. Palin was always flying away somewhere else instead of being a mom for that fact where was the dad off hunting with his wife in the plane? What great examples of double talk from our candidates. But I notice both women are the bread winners in the families, not the men. You could say these are kept men, playboys, gigolos. LoL
How about that Cindy Mccain. She made more money than middle class people make in 10 years and got to keep more of it than a real tax payer gets to keep. No wonder the took so long in disclosing her finances. How much more out of touch can these people be. They live in the Twilight Zone! So does anyone who believes their lies!
this blog is a joke, who cares?  The King Air costs about 1/3 of the jet- that was the point, not that she did not have to travel
Keith Ashdown of Taxpayers for Common Sense, a non-profit budget watchdog group, says the chart is the first indication of how extensively Palin used the government's plane

So 20 percent is extensive??  C'mon you cant be serious....Its Alaska, not Vermont so its not exactly the easiest place to get around by car.  And she did sell the Jet and kept the Turboprop, sounds like maybe she should have kept the jet at taxpayers expense then right?
There is so any little things that are coming out about Sarah Palin that all points towards her misuse of authority and her keeping secrets. She touts selling the plane yet doesn't use public transportation. She has taken Alaskans money for travel for her family to places that they did not need to go and should have been paid for out of her own pocket. She has refused to live in the Gov. Mansion and charged the State for $17000 in per diem to live at her own home! She has no reform or maverick in her. Her personal policy for abstinence over teaching birth control works well- look at Bristol. She will fire people she doesn't like and there are three so far: the Wasilla librarian, the Wasilla police chief, and Walt Monegan. She is just like all the rest of the old time politicians.
When the Republican Party took Palin on as a VP Candidate, my guess is she's too new to have baggage. Guess what? Many skeletons in her closet just in time for Halloween.
So, I guess the Governors in the lower 48 all drive where they have to go.  Moreover, the operating costs of a jet far exceed that of a turbo prop. BTW, what is the point exactly.  All I hear is about how much Gov Palin spent while she was the Governor.....but the previous Governor spent 3 times as much or more on the same things.  It wasn't a story then.  Just more democratic media slant.  You will probably get your wish when Obama gets elected.  But who will you be able to blame then....I guess you will still find a way to blame Bush.
Lord, this woman's corruption is without end, and good ole Todd is pitchin' right in.
Add to this the new AP report about Palin flying her children at state expense to her husbands snow machine races. And flying the kids to New York at taxpayer expense repeatedly. Palin had state records changed to show the kids were traveling on state business because "at one event Ms Palin listed a role for the two girls at the function as 'to draw two separate raffle tickets'." Not so mavericky, is it?
What does this say about McCain?
A) It's a public safety plane, not the governor's private carriage. It's a bit ridiculous to demand that a plane that is explicitly for other uses take up the slack of the plane she sold, which was pretty much dedicated to the governor's use.

B) Her office is in Anchorage. That makes it a 30 mile drive. Unless there's a multi-lane pileup on the Parks Highway, that's a sub-30 minute drive.

Z) She's yet another corrupt provincial politician who figured she was so far from any real oversight that she could pretty much do as she pleased. I mean, we elected her, right? How smart could we be?
To be fair, there are lots of remote towns in Alaska that simply can't be reached either easily or at all by ground transportation.  Private planes are quite common in Alaska because of this fact.  It's not quite seen as a "luxury" the way the rest of us might assume.  However, that being said, it is more than a bit disingenuous of her to use this issue to make herself look thrifty, particularly if she's giving DPS a hard time for the plane not being available.  Especially since they might have needed it for actual police operations, etc.  If she needed a plane so badly, there's probably quite a few alternative private planes and pilots for hire up there that she could have used if it was really needed.
Of course the previous governor spent more, she's only been governor for a year and a half and the last two months of her term she's been flying on the rest of the country's dime.
David: This isn't about "Democratic media slant." The previous governor was another hog-at-the-trough Republican. So she's not as dirty ... that makes her clean?
Gov. Palin could have easily traveled all over the great state of Alaska by commercial air on almost any day of the week allowing for weather. This could have been funded by the office of the governor and would have left an accountability trail of financial information about use or over-use. The state plane she used and wanted to use even more often is clearly for critical search and rescue missions (which do not occur on a schedule) and police work (which can also be needed on a moments notice). As picayune as this story seems to some it demonstrates quite effectively the sense of entitlement and self-absorption that Gov. Palin and her spouse have relative to the needs and resources of the Alaskan citizens. Oh, and then there is still that eBay/reform claim about the jet. By placing it on eBay (where it was ignored) it increased maintenance costs as well as the  not so small commission that went to the airplane broker who eventually did sell the jet.
Not much scandal here.  Seems the gist of your expose is that she sold a jet that was not necessary and shared the other plane to save money.  I'm no Palin fan, but this is a waste of time.
Head on over to Mapquest.  Plug in various cities in Alaska.  You'll find that you cannot, for example, drive from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska.  You cannot drive to the North Slope.  Although the federal government owns a huge chunk of land in the state, it has refused to spend money on infrastructure projects that people in the lower 48 take for granted.

This is right up there with complaining that a Hawaiian official would use a plane to get around.

Hello, folks - she sold off the corporate jet because there was already a plane that she could use for official business - she would just have to share it.
This is the most ridiculous story.  The Gov.'s shared use of a turbo prop to get around the remote state she governs is somehow a problem?  How can NBC even call themselves journalists?  I give up on trying to give NBC the benefit of the doubt.
Joe Biden takes and has taken the train for a fair number of years, David. And for the record her home is 40 miles from the satellite office in Anchorage. How many of us get to charge our employers for commuting expense? Think about how this adding up. Its not for the greater good, that's for sure. Spread hope. Not fear.
Dear Bruce and R. Hayes,

This story is a follow up to Todd Palin claims that part of the reason for the Public Safety official's termination was that they felt he was constantly keeping her from using the airplane.

This was just following up on that claim.  Their findings are not being presented as an abuse of power issue, just a fact finding mission that shows the Governor did actually get pretty fair usage of a plane that was supposed to be at the primary disposal of the law enforcement.
Note to Palin apologists:
She was eager to take credit for selling the jet (at a loss).
She then charged taxpayers improperly for flights to NYC and to her husband's snow machine contests.
Once again Todd looms his head, browbeating state workers for witholding the plane 'because of Troopergate.' This guy routinely abuses public office.
She could have chartered a small plane or flown commercial in Alaska. Both are relatively cheap,, but no.
Sarah's taxes are mess, including deductions for snow machine racing.
She used 150 K in tax dollars to buy New York fashions, (yes McCain's campaign is tax funded.)
And, David. Greensboro,  of NC, no need to blame bush, he has all of the blood, corruption and abuse of power on his hands that he needs...that's why he only comes out of the White House like a bird in a cuckoo clock, when things get really, really bad (Thanks for wrecking the country, W but Palin is all McCain's doing.)
You must be joking. why are you trying to make saving taxpayer money into some kind of ridiculess scandal?
The point many people seem to be missing is not that Governor Palin used the plane to get around her state, but rather that she has consistently (and hypocritically) stated that she "sold the plane on E-Bay" in order to reinforce her credentials as a reformer and 'maverick'. (Playing fast and loose with facts seems to be a habit with the Governor -- she may have listed the plane for sale on E-Bay, but instead sold it, for a loss, in an entirely different venue.)  Of course she needs the plane to get around Alaska.  But don't then go around telling everyone that you didn't use it.  And for the Palins (husband and wife) to whine about the fact that a police plane was not available to them, I fear, only goes to show how self-centered they can be.  (WHy is it that their first reaction to being told that the plane was not available to be used by them was one of suspicion that they were being 'dissed'?  Perhaps because they themselves often used the tactic to 'punish' those who opposed them in any manner?  Does the term 'projection' mean anything to anyone...?
Ever been to AlaskA?

Lots of places are NOT accessible by road -- that's why they build ice roads in winter!

Many places do not have airports suitable for jets -- only the biggest ones.

Sometimes governors do need to go someplace outside the capitol building....

Turboprops are a much more practical way to get around, even if slower.
you cannot reach 80% of the state by road.  At least she was not using a private jet, chef, and limo to get around.
This does not make Palin a bad politician, but just a politician, unfortunately.
It seems that no matter what she does, she is darned if she does, darned if she doesn't.  Obama spends 150 million on ads and that is ok?  No one talks about HIS expenses.  I am sick of this.  None of us will be able to pay our way out of a paper bag pretty soon.  What is the matter with all of you?  Don't you see what is going on?  I have been democratic my entire life (58) now I am afraid of the democrats and hey listen anyone afraid at all that Pelosi is the 3rd in line for the presidency?  I am!  God help us all.
So let's see for about 20% of the time the Public Safety department's prop plane was not availiable because of Palins need...hummm seems to me you wouldn't want to make it unavailiable in the event of an emergency need. Sure she sold the second plane....at a loss to the state (did anyone check to see if her dad or one of his fly buddies purchased it?....just wondering). SShe allows the GOP to spend $150,000 on cloths and other items ($4,100 on makeup alone). Also travel and lodging for her kids that she brought on a whim (on taxpayer dollars) charging per diem for being in her own home by utilizing a grey area in state law. It all might not be "against the law" but it is unethical and a waste of money. If you all care to put this kind of person in a position to effect the use of national taxpayer money.....I hope ya'll are the first to go belly up financially. GOP = Getting Over Paid

The point is she can't have it both ways. She never mentioned using a different government plane. She implied that by selling one jet, she drove like everyone else and didn't use state property for her transportation.  Noone would have cared if she would have kept the jet and used it, or sold the jet for a cheaper, more practical plane, or put the jet sale money in a travel account for commercial airline/transport.  People care because like with the bridge to nowhere, she wants it both ways.  To take credit for not spending wasteful money, while keeping the money for other projects.

Great job Aram. Thanks for bringing this to light. Those who see no significance in this thread of corruption or who cannot connect the dots. need not read any news at all (except Fox) if all they want is the coddling of their own ideologically matched candidates.
I can understand using the plane but please tell me if all of a sudden the plane is needed for a search and rescue and Palin wants it also, who wins?
I think I'll sell my car and then just make my neighbor drive me to work every day.

And then if he can't take me because his car is being repaired, I'll write an affadavit saying that he should be fired from his job.

Yeah, that seems fair.
If the writer of this article had been honest in the report he would have included the distance one has to travel around her state.  How much less she spent on travel compared to the previous governors including this plane, that she was open to all Alaskans on what she spent, that she has an 80% approval rate by Alaskans, that  the state capital is farther away from the most of the population of Alaskas than any other state is wide, and if he was realy wanting to be honest in reporting he woulkd compare other state governors in their use fo state planes.  Half truths are the same as down right lies.
A plane meant for primary police business and search and rescue missions. Should never be on loan for any other purpose, regardless of office held.

How on earth would you justify to a missing persons family, sorry we can't start the air search for your missing children because the governor wanted to use our plane.

Common people you are so eager to defend her you forget to engage your brain.
I like the idea that she was willing to share a plane with other government agencies.  That was a big saving to tax payers.
YOU CAN'T GET TO THE CAPITAL OF ALASKA BY CAR, SO ALL POLITICIANS FLY BACK AND FORTH.
Selling the plane is just a news agenda for Palin.  There are many options she can do with the plane eg. allow her plane to be availiable for emergencies when shes not using it and so on, or make arrangements to share her plane with the other depts. Whats happening here is that she sold the plane make noise about it expecting credit about it and then go after the police for an emergency plane for her own use.  She is making her life painful by selling it off so she should not be making noise about the inconvenience that she has without the plane.
This is a drop in a bucket comared to the next four years if she ends up in the White House
all her daughters and their boyfriends, grandkids and of course her protective husband will be under
security protection with body guards and will continue traveling around and even more back and forth to Alaska again digging in deeper in the taxpayers pockets
More BS from NBC. Every governor in all 50 fly to conduct business. What is the deal that she should not. All you mindless libs are killing the country with your one sided crap.
C'mon folks, maybe she should get around alaska by train or horse carriage to make some people happy. All governors have aircraft at their disposal, Ms Palin should be no exception. Give her a break ok? she is the Governor of a state not a clerk in the local court. If anyone has a bone to pick please pick one that makes sense, not this.
I actually think that this is a very serious issue indeed as it, like so many other things that keep comming out about this creature, indicates a personality who has a gargantuan sense of entitlement; far and beyond the scope of any normal ego development. Think soberly here folks - she was doing the equivalent of grabbing the local fire-truck to get her overpaid and unimportant derriere from point A to B! That aircraft should have been standing by, at all times, for police and S&R emergencies - case closed! I am just a little more right wing than Attila the Hun and I can tell you this woman is no true conservative -she is just another political hack who happens to believe she is far more important than she really is. It is her kind, precisley, that will ensure that Obama and the lefties get in to power. If McCain had an ounce left of that vaunted courage we keep hearing about - he would ditch this egomaniac tomorrow and then he could honestly tell Americans that he had the courage to confront a gross error and fix it; - sold properly - that could be a game-changing winner for him (after all, we have just witnessed the result of a White House unable to admit any error and thereby compounding its grief in stupid foreign entanglements while the economy hits bottom).

This woman's hypocrisy knows no bounds and we need to send her back to Wasilla where, even as mayor, she has a few things left over that need settling - i.e., such as a land dispute concerning the fabulous sport/rec center she had built (but on land that Wasilla didn't own - she proved she could not even take care of due dilligence at such a low level of public life engagement)!
OK, so Alaska is vast and hard to get around in. Many citizens fly planes to get around like we use cars. But think of it this way---if the local police in the lower 48 only had one car to use for POLICE work, why would a governor or anyone else be expected to use it for their job travel? And, what would happen if there was a POLICE emergency and the only police car was across the state being used by the governor? Guess her sale of the jet wasn't very well thought out. She was probably told the drawbacks and didn't listen. I think the person here who mentioned that a fund for commercial travel or purchase of a cheaper plane should have been set up from the sale of the jet was a good one. Don't know why she assumed that the state plane would always be available to her since it has a distinct purpose whose use can not be predicted or scheduled. And to the person who mentioned her getting rid of the governor's chef---he was just put to work somewhere else in the state so it wasn't a savings to the state taxpayers.
Sarah did not sell the jet on ebay.  She sold it somewhere else at a loss.  Then she expected the law enforcement twin engine plane to be at her disposal even though it was actually needed for law enforcement and etc.  Maybe she should have sold the jet and with the money bought another twin engine plane for government business.  Then, she and the future governors of Alaska would not have to deal with schedules. (After all her decision affected her as well as future governors.) Obviously she thought the law enforcement plane should be for her use and darn it - law enforcement and rescue can wait.  You betcha!
So what was the point of selling the state jet? Could it be that the former governor neededto get around too without having to compromise the responsibilities of the DPS, not to mention endengering rescue operations if the DPS was not available when needed because it was being used by the governor.  Go on Palin keeping digging your hole.  McCain lies are coming unraveled if country first means having this disingenious, unqualified and so not ready Palin a heart beat away from the presidency of the united states.  As a woman I am deeply offended that Palin is thought as McCain answer to Hillary Clinton, and suggesting that she represents women - that's a huge joke and this ticket is wacked.
What a stupid story. Was she suppose to walk to the remote parts of Alaska? She gets rid of the nice personal jet other governors had used and shares a twin engine instead,(saving tons of money I might add) and gets critisized? NBC isn't biased, are they? And Aram is a biased idiot...
Several readers miss what i believe should be the point. The supposed purpose of the King air is said for law inforcement and search and rescue missions. How are these primary functions able to be at ready if she is on a visiting tour? Granted that visiting is part of her job but not to mahe the plane unavailable for priority missions. The big thing is she failed to ask for the pie chart to help determine the justification in selling the jet.She also failed to understand what taking the King Air out of its primary mission meant. Like not understanding the VP role and the Constitution of the United States! perhaps trading the jet in for a smaller weather plane such as the DeHavalin might have been the informed answer???
Is anybody thinking here?  Let me ask you, what if your governor was off in a plane (let's say the 600 miles she had to drive to work) and you needed to be rescued.  HELLOO!  You sit and die just so she can get to the other side of the island?  You better be watching 'Survivor' on Thursday night!
