Court documents reveal ACORN's troubled history

Move over, Bill Ayers. This week, Republican activists have a new Public Enemy #1. It’s ACORN, the once-obscure community-organizing group that boasts of having registered 1.3 million new voters.

Republican officials and advisers to Sen. John McCain have accused ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) of rampant voter-registration fraud. Indeed, officials in states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Indiana and Connecticut now are looking into accusations that ACORN workers turned in thousands of fraudulent or duplicate voter-registration applications. (The Dallas Cowboys magically filled out voter registration forms in Nevada, for example.)

So what exactly is ACORN’s track record in registering new voters? It hasn’t always been pretty. Here are some highlights (lowlights?) from recent court documents and public testimony in three states that have examined ACORN’s hiring practices over the past two years.

Nevada 2008
On October 6, a criminal investigator with the Nevada Secretary of State filed a search-warrant affidavit stating that ACORN workers used “fictitious and false information” on voter registration applications. Among the allegations:

--ACORN hired 59 state prison inmates to collect voter-registration forms. One was Jason Anderson, who currently is imprisoned for burglary and firearms violations at the state’s Casa Grande halfway house in Las Vegas, court records show. Anderson, who became a supervisory “team leader” for ACORN, told state investigators that some of his co-workers “hired by ACORN were ‘lazy crack-heads’ who were not interested in working and just wanted the money.” Anderson is the whistleblower who told state investigators that his inmate colleagues had registered the Dallas Cowboys to vote in Nevada, along with “large numbers” of other fictitious applications.

--Another ACORN worker, Darmela Jones, said “she submitted approximately 40 Voter Registration Applications while employed at ACORN and only 10 were real applications.” Her excuse? Jones said “it was very hot outside while she was getting people to complete a form.”

--Yet another ACORN canvasser “was caught completing forms using names and addresses copied from the telephone book.”

-- Investigators also identified a Nevada woman, Roberta Casteel, who had not registered to vote but whose voter-registration application was submitted to the state by ACORN.  How, then, did the ACORN workers find her name, driver’s license number and Social Security number? Here’s one clue: Casteel’s purse was stolen last year, she said. Now how would state inmates living in a halfway house know about that?

Ohio 2008
Election officials in Ohio’s most populous county asked a prosecutor Monday to investigate alleged voter-registration fraud. One local man, Freddie Johnson of Cleveland, testified before the bipartisan Cuyahoga County Board of Elections that ACORN workers encouraged him to sign 73 voter registration forms—all in his own name.

“They get paid off a signature,” he said. “So they just needed a signature and told me I wasn’t going to get into trouble.”

In an interview with the Cleveland NBC station, WKYC,  after the hearing, Johnson said the ACORN workers paid him a few bucks and gave him a few cigarettes in exchange for the multiple signatures. ACORN said the workers in question were fired.

Washington State 2007
The King County Prosecutor’s Office filed criminal charges last year against seven ACORN workers accused of submitting 1,762 fraudulent voter registrations to the state in 2006. The workers--many of whom had prior convictions-- went to the Seattle Public Library and filled out forms “based on names, addresses and telephone numbers taken from the telephone books,” state prosecutor Daniel Satterberg said.

In addition, one of the canvassers paid $8 an hour by ACORN “said it was hard work making up all those cards,” according to a probable-cause statement by a King County Sheriff’s detective. Another ACORN worker boasted “he would often sit at home, smoke marijuana and fill out cards,” the statement said.

Several of the Seattle-based ACORN workers had criminal histories prior to their employment. One had pleaded guilty to second-degree child molestation, and another had pleaded guilty to harassment for writing a bomb-threat note. Yet another had a crack-cocaine problem.

“We believe that ACORN’s internal quality control procedures were not just deficient but entirely non-existent,” Satterberg said. “This was an act of vandalism against our voter rolls.”

ACORN Responds
In an interview today with NBC News, ACORN spokesman Charles Jackson defended the group’s voter-registration drives. “Our system works,” he said. “I don’t know what more we can do.”

Jackson said that ACORN itself had identified most of the fraudulent or duplicative registration forms this campaign year, and not state officials. He said the error rate of the 1.3 million voters registered was “a very small percentage.” And he defended the hiring of inmates in Nevada.

“We believe in giving people a second chance,” Jackson said. “We thought we had a system in place to check it.”

Why do you start by saying "Move over, Bill Ayers" when the Ayers and ACORN issue are so closely related.

When Ayers received 50 million dollars for a grant with the express purpose of radicalizing education, guess who he chose to distribute the 50 mil? Why, Barack Obama of course. And where did some of that money go? Why, to ACORN, of course.

They're not different issues, but all part of B.H Obama's web of lies.
It's about time you guys at MSNBC did some real investigating. Acorn is threatening the very foundation of our nation's democracy. Are you afraid that the whole truth will come out?
Where's the beef?

I see a laundry list of shady characters working near-minimum wage to register voters, but then committing fraud against ACORN.  If a cashier at McD's steals from the til, is McD's investigated for fraud?

I see no more of a "troubled history" than any company that participates - and is effected by -  state work-release programs.

Two more things:
A.) Voter Fraud could only occur if the ficticious individuals ACTUALLY VOTED.  From another story, apparently a "Mickey Mouse" filled out a voter registration card.  Now if this Mickey Mouse then shows up and votes, THEN fraud has occurred.

B.)  Notice that the GOP is targeting a group that tries to register low-income individuals.  Bidness as usual

C.) Notice also that several of the states in question had GOP US attorneys fired by fraud-friendly Alberto Gonzales for... (wait for it)... refusing to prosecute "voter fraud complaints"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/13/AR2007051301106.html

Gonzales got tossed out.  Don't let him back in.  No more lies.  No 4 more years for McSame

How many people were paid by Karl Rove and RNC operatives to try to register Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse?

Our national media should be ashamed of themselves. When these things are going on like Acorn and being so tied to Obama how can they sit on their hands and not report the truth.  I do believe that we are seeing the end of the media as we know it as people are sick of their bias.
Dont' worry, Republicans.  Diebold has programmed their machines to ignore Acorn registered votes.
Why did it take Republicans to investigate this organization? The media is so busy showing the love to Senator Obama they don't have time to go out and get a real story?
Obama's political career began in Chicago where the Democrat regimes have had a history of doing what ACORN is doing.  With Obama sending money to this group and also instructing them, would you expect anything different? The company that you keep is usually a good indication of your own convictions (no pun intended). Do you really want Bill Ayres, ACORN, etc. to have access to the President of the USA.
All this outrage from the "right" over voter fraud is interesting given the way George W Bush stoled two elections using every fraudulant trick in the book.
Must be where all the dead folks vote OR some of them dems with funny ideas about the sneaky way they want to vote this time
ME? I havent seen any of them I could trust this time around.
Here, case-and-point:

"Mich. AG charges ex-ACORN worker with forgery"
http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/index.ssf?/base/news-58/122402154499920.xml&storylist=newsmichigan

That's one person being charged with forgery (and rightfully so).  Not ACORN.

That's a pretty small error-rate (so far): 350,000 to 1

Here's a pretty close equivelency: I used to be a training manager at a small Seattle restaurant chain - employing near minimum-wage jobs, and participating with local work-release programs.   During my 4+ year employment, I personally fired  at least 10 people for theft (and had them prosecuted).

So here's your question, GOP half-wits:
Who was the criminal in this scenario
A.) Me
B.) The Restaurant chain
C.) The employee who stole the money.

You better copy and paste this article because when Obamabots will get done with this site it will be hacked into virtual non-existence.
this issue should be published always so simple-minded people who are voting for Obama will think twice.Only smart people who really understand our country will not give their votes for Obama, who is full of lies and has some hidden agenda for himself and his interest in this country. At least I'll be able to sleep with clear conscience after the election because I know I'LL BE VOTING FOR A DIGNIFIED HUMAN BEING,mR. MCCAIN
This is a great piece of investigative reporting. This truth needs to be told to America and ACORN needs to be stopped if America is to remain democratic. I would love to see one from you guys on Ayers and his ties with Obama. I know there has to be more then one network out there that will uncover the dancing around the Ayers issue from the Obama camp.
If ACORN has registered 1.3 million voters and, though no one has offered a real figure--or at least no one of any reputation for honesty--13000 of them are mis-registrations *from this year* (whether deliberate or not), that leaves them with a 99% accuracy rate in voter registration over the entire country.  In King County,WA, alone there are 1.8 million potential voters, and the suit prosecuted against ACORN was last year.

Does ACORN need to figure a better way to pre-screen their workers and their registration documentation?  Of course they do.  Will a bunch of nonexistent voters be countable at a voting place?  That's strains my credulity, unless identification standards are ignored by polling registrars.

I would be much more worried about tampering with voting machines--ask the people of Durham County NC about what happened to them in the Helms/Gantt senate race of 1990.
From the Article: "ACORN itself had identified most of the fraudulent or duplicative registration forms".

ACORN is required by law to turn over all voter registration cards (even ones filled out by high ex-cons), wether they are suspected of being fradulant or not. ACORN has a program in place to help state officials identify possible fradualnt registrations, and works with officials to make sure any suspect registrations are identified and addressed. ACORN should not be held liable for state officials too lazy to take their jobs seriously.

Not surprisingly, its much easier to report a knee jerk-scandal than to actually investigate the operations of this organization or federal voter registration requirements.
OK, so what is the nature of the problems here?

1.) They hire criminals.
2.) The people they hire make up names.

And what are the ramifications of those problems?

1.) They give criminals a second chance; it doesn't work; ACORN wastes its money and time.

2.) Fictitious people don't vote; ACORN wastes its time again (and also the time and resources of whatever election oversigh board has to wade through all that bad paperwork).

OK, so where's the fire?

I watch MSNBC as much as I can stand it just to hear what the liberal media has to offer it's viewers and I am wondering why you would not want your viewers to know this truth which seems to be hidden here on your website.  I do appreciate it being here though or I may not have had all the facts.  I can tell you that The United States of America has been good to the liberal media and I believe it is only right that you return the favor by reporting this with the same passion you have reported Troopergate.  Get this group exposed for what it is and the candidate connected to it and win the the trust of the greatest nation on earth.  Get the truth on the table and let us make our choice based on nothing but the truth.
Just as sleezy as some of ACORN's actions (after all it is a pretty big grass roots effort, there are bound to be a few bad apples....) are the spreading of "talking points" trying to connect Obama to ACORN and Bill Ayers on some critical level.

Since McCain's camp cannot make any official accusations to Obama about any of his actions now or in the past in regards these topics, instead the little people will imply and wink at people and spread rumors and insinuations through email.

Case in point J Morsicle's comment above; So Ayers got 50 million dollars, and so Barack Obama found himself in the leadership role to decide how to use that to reform the education system in some of Illinois' poorest suburbs......

So What? Why don't you just come out and say exactly what your accusations are, and once you know that, why don't you do something about it and see if it sticks?

I am sure McCain and his Repundits have already thoroughly investigated to see how they can use anything against him.
Republican's need to get a life.  ACORN is the problem not Obama or any other politician Democrat or Republican.  Both political groups use organizations to register people.  Today ACORN is in the spotlight, next time it will be another.  Linking Obama to ACORN (or any other problem in the world) and suggesting he is the "demon" behind the attempt at voter fraud is a real stretch.
Why must Republicans try to divide Americans at every turn using fear and lies as their instrument of choice?
The simple fact is no one party or person is 100% correct or perfect.
In the final analysis, our society will only grow when everyone (Democrat and Republican and the extreme religious factions from both ends of the spectrum) understand the necessity of compromise and the need to help and respect one another.  We are "Americans" plan and simple
Nate, Seattle, WA.  You're missing the point.  Unlike your food business that had shady employees, ACORN's main mission is voter registration.  And if they submit fraudulent voter registration it goes against their core service.  So unless your example is of cooks who provide bad food, your example is irrelevant.  And if restaurant chain serves bad food it will reflect negatively on the chain.
Dude, quit drinking Kool-Aid.
These are all cases of people in low wage jobs trying to scam a little bit, not evidence of ACORN committing fraud.  It would be a concern if the members of the Dallas Cowboys were showing up and trying to vote in Nevada, but that just is not happening.  ACORN does a lot of good work besides voter registration.  They were there when the Bush Administration was MIA during Katrina.  This hysteria is pure racism thinly veiled.  Especially when you look at the massive ELECTION FRAUD that happened in Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004.
Clearly some commenters are here just for the baiting. Certainly they are not stupid enough to confuse voter registration with the actual casting of a vote. The Dallas Cowboys may be registered to vote in Nevada, for them to actually be able to vote there is a completely different matter. And, registering a person to vote does not determine their choice. What might determine their choice is if the election officials have been corrupted by, say, AIPAC or some other foriegn agency whose mission it is to subvert the American system. Republicans are afraid of registering voters because they know that the more voters, the more difficult it will be to employ fraud, again, to steal the election. The percentage of bad registrations out of 1.3 million is ignored in this "Deep Background" which, by that alone, proves it not to be very deep at all. A few charges (always the same ones) and a couple of anecdotes is what "deep" has come to mean to Americans, I suppose. But, usually, this style is the stamp of propagandistic pap.
You seem incapable of reporting a story without a negative political slant against Republicans.  Acorn is a racketeering issue it took the Republicans to push until it forced you to pay attention.  Your news organization has become a laughing stock of prejudicial reporting and bias in favor of the democrats.
The appearance of this article tonight is indicative of a change in tone from some in the media.  These wolves smell blood, and they want in on the feast.
R.Scott Pueblo Colo. wrote, "...George Bush stoled two elections using every fraudulant trick in the book". Really? Name one!
As usual, the GOP parrot brigade, takes a non-issue, and tries to make it important.
ACORN's problem is not Voter Fraud, it's their hiring practices.  People take their money, and don't do the work.  The phony registrations don't vote.
This whole non-story is just another GOP attempt, to disenfranchise lower-income voters, who tend to vote Democratic.
The problem in this Country is Election Fraud, and voter caging/voter suppression.  Both being key parts of GOP election strategy.
It does seem that ACORN has some management problems, not to mention poor screening of potential employees. But let's keep some perspective. Even assuming that there are 10,000 problem registrations (and nowhere near that number was indicated in your report), it still only equals .008% (8/1,000, which equals 1/125, of one percent) of the 1,300,000 registrations ACORN has submitted. While there are certainly legitamate criticisms to be made of ACORN - from the left as well as the right - an error rate of 1/125 of one percent is not much of a story.
roflmao acorn is threatening it> you mean the very institution of democracy that allowed the bushes to steal the last 8 years. you mean the institution that allowed them to send us into financial ruin with their deregulation.  need i say more if your going to judge a man by his past associations then please explain to me how in the blazes you all voted for bush and he was and is a alcoholic , liar, theif, dodger, and war monger and mcsame is just like him with a different name.
Not to rain on your conspiracy theory parade, but these are VOTER REGISTRATIONS and not actual BALLOTS. Just because an idiot defrauded ACORN by signing a guy up 73 times doesn't mean he will be able to vote 73 times. Obviously these folks need to follow up on their employees more, and get the ones who are wasting time and money off the payroll, but I guess I can't blame the Republicans for grasping at straws at this point.
Glad the mainstream media is FINALLY doing some investigating on Obama- it is insane how much positive attention he is getting, vs. all the negative attention Pailn has received-
It,s about time that NBC starts telling the truth about Obama being involved with ACORN.  And stop lying for him about his involvemnet with Bill Ayers............. this man could be our next President lying all the way to the oval office. Now this is the man we want to be representing our country, and have all of our lives in his hands let alone being in contol of our ecomony.
Threatening our democracy.. Don't make me laugh.. When the courts decide your president versus who the voters really elected, that's a threat to democracy, when you have government spying on its own citizens, that's a threat to democracy... There are plenty of other examples of threats to democracy, ACORN isn't one of those.

If all it takes for our election system to become a complete failure is bad registration card, we would have a pretty bad democracy.  So get a grip and stop making an issue where there isn't one.  Get a clue...

Bottomline, yes ACORN has done a bad thing here and hopefully people will go to jail and stop this criminal activity.  But it should also be noted that even with the bad registration, our Election system is robust enough to handle this, if it isn't then we have bigger issues. (BTW, Ken Blackwell, Republican, frmr. Sec. of State for Ohio said as much on Hannity and combs show a couple of weeks ago when Fox starting yelling.)

Final point, in 2004 approx 120,000,000 people voted.  If we assume that of the 1,300,000 people that ACORN has registered 50% are bad and they somehow are able to cast a vote that would mean 650,000 bad votes are in the system which is approx 0.5%.  Of course we could have another Bush V Gore but statistically you all need to get a grip with claiming "Threat to our Democracy"  gezz  We have bigger real issues then this silly thing.
Uh oh, look out--the GOP is behind and looking to figure out how to blame someone else besides their candidate and his airhead beep selection.
Who can we blame?  Hmmm...how about the poor?  Sure!  They got us into the sub-prime mess....now they are trying to steal an election....and Obama was poor once and worked for them, so surely he must be completely tied in with them, right?  What the heck, why not blame Ayers (appointed to Rep. Annenberg-related group, btw), that way we can play the (overplayed) terrorist card, and what the keck, while we are playing the terrorist card, why not throw in the fact Obama has a Muslim name?
Did I cover it all?

Give it up--your old man is losing because he has run his platform on air, no substance at all and now all you righties are grasping at shadows.  ACORN may have some nut jobs registering nobodies, but the big picture is a few out of many.  Your "group" (read:the Supreme Court) DID steal an election, and look where that got us?  Even your own boy (not girl, because she probably didn't read about it) disavows his leader for the last 8 years....
if Obama and his diciples gain power.. I suggest another historical secession. Our beloved country will be hijack by those obamanators whos  true purpose is to destroy the U.S.. I hope the veterans and active military recall the oath they took. To protect this country from both foreign and domestic enemies. I have no problem if a  democrat becomes President buth if its a 'manchurian candidate' they we must take sides. With Obama and his acornites..United these states no more!
Is this close to what happened on our last election day 4 years ago????

I am confused was it ACORN that caused the vote to be stolen in 04, were they GOP back then.

Well I say hang the SOB'S.

This is the funniest thing I have read in a long time...is this the voice of desperation speaking.

Thank God they caught this BEFORE the election, having a repeat of '04'
would be hell.

OBAMA doesn't need to answer to back page trite!!

Our govrnment has made our country as corrupt as the worst third world country and they still let it keep going .Why do they keep commiting crime in the wide open and blameing some one else for it?What Will it take to wake this nation up from this bad dream and take a look at what Acorn and Oboma has been and is still doing to this country .When a true patriot like John Mc Cain cant run a campaign in the open for fear of making the black people upset and call him a George  Wallace. And the media make sure he gets by with it.You tell me what is wrong With it.
ACORN is for the most part a great grass roots community organization.  A few bad apples fibbed and you are trashing the entire effort?  Sad, as they supplied wonderful loans for low income folks (which in California are every young couple) and they weren't sub prime.
What a red herring.  We have so many other issues to talk about and we waste time on this? What about wasting such a great opportunity for a women with such a looser as Palin?
TO: people who say multiple voter registrations don't 'really' matter.
These fraudulent registrations can ALL vote by mail.
Now - do you see how this can effect the election?
DUH!!!!
why do we need acorns anyway? isn't it good enough to have the right to vote without having to have someone come and guilt trip you to get a registration and possibly hardball you into voting your desired way?
Has anyone in any of these Board of elecctions, or the media or government officials checked to see if these registration forms were tagged as claimed by ACORN? If so why the complaint? If any voter registration group MUST turn in all forms legit or not and that group tags what they think is not legit then why are the election people complaining and not just setting them aside.
And why was there only one article about the illegal pulling of names from the books in the toss-up states?
Nothing in this article suggests that any of these  fraudulent applications was going to ever translate into an actual fraudulent vote.  And isn't that what we should really be worried about?

I mean, come on now, does anyone really think the Dallas Cowboys were going to present themselves at a Nevada polling station on November 4th in hopes of voting illegally?

If you can't find any evidence that anyone ever planned to turn a fraudulent voter registration into an actual fraudulent vote then where exactly is the harm?

Sounds like a lot of fuss over nothing to me.  With the economy on the verge of collapse don't we have better things to be doing with our time?
Funny how all the McCain yupies pull in here talking about Obama, yet fail realize the man has no political working associations with Acorn. Though i guess they forget when their beloved audlter McCain did a keynote address for them
this corrupt organization needs to be shut down.  Obama is well aware of these tactics.  How did he get a national security clearance to run for president.  He is as criminal as ACORN and the main stream press needs to wake up.
Ugh.  The people who really care about voting are already registered anyway and both candidates know that; if ACORN did something wrong it's because of bad management. I seriously doubt either candidate knew what the Hell was going on until after it was over.

This is just a distraction and won't change anything at this point.
NBC has lost credibilty with this ACORN  hit piece. It horrifies me to think your reporter is so wet behind the ears as to think the facts in this article are significant or even unusual. There are checks downstream in the system just because this is the norm in a large voter registration effort.  The wet  behind the ears theory, however, is more benign that the other likely alternative, that this is a deliberate effort by NBC  to subvert the elections. Did Republicans secretely pay you to run this slanderous story?
Finally, a little honest journalism, The news, and the celebrities are so bias it infuriates me.
how can  a SNL skit can have the good people of the USA following like sheep ..
Has TV comedy mentality turn you all into idiots..
Come on people use your heads, comedy is not real life, and if that's how your see these skits, we are all in real trouble in this country
you are letting TV writers , actors and comedians run our lives.....
To Obama Haters:
what a facinating phenomenon - paranoid, racist, small minded bigots flailing for any and all excuses to hide behind. Shame! Shame! Shame! Why is it that you rush to embrace these rubbish associations that any sane and literate person can see have nothing to do with the man Obama? Thank God the majority of us have a brain and will excercise it in selecting a president based on his merits.
And guess what? none of your foolish indignation matters - we are electing him our president....
Wake up! the world has moved on, small minded, ignorant, racist people are the true minority thank God....and, you are the last of an ignorant bunch :-)
Gee I wonder how many absentee ballots are just waiting somewhere to be presented in the names of those "non-important voter" registrations. In case many of you don't know it, you don't have to go to the polls to vote. It seems to me if ACORN was truly interested in helping REAL people vote they would make sure they hire QUALIFIED employees. They certainly have been supplied with enough funds to do it! They also wouldn't be telling people HOW to register, as in DEMOCRAT. How can anyone say they love their country and DEMOCRACY and feel this behavior is ok! Its funny how the democrats love to blame BUSH because he is the guy at the top but when it comes to OBAMA being dishonest, it is completely washed aside. AMAZING!
