Al-Qaida speaks. Is anyone still listening?

What if the al-Qaida deputy spoke, and nobody listened? That's essentially what happened today when the propaganda division of the terrorist group released its latest video--complete with a major new speech by the al-Qaida deputy, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri--celebrating the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

Al-Qaida released the new 90-minute tape to the Al Jazeera television network, played select portions of it throughout the day. But the tape has received scant attention in the United States, especially compared to recent 9-11 anniversaries.

Terrorism analysts say that Americans--and American media outlets--are ignoring al-Qaida messages at their own peril. For many Americans, terrorism concerns are "falling off the radar, as al-Qaida has been silent in the USA (and much of the West) since 9-11," said Michael Sheehan, the former counter-terrorism official for the State Department and the City of New York. "Foreign attacks are mostly background noise. This is troublesome, for if we lose our focus they will attack us again at home," said Sheehan, who is now an NBC News terrorism analyst.

Robert Grenier, the former CIA counter-terrorism official and former CIA station chief in Islamabad, agreed. "We probably overreacted initially" to al-Qaida threats after the 9-11 attacks, Grenier said, "and we are under-reacting now." He said that while al-Qaida has suffered setbacks in recent years, it is resurgent along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and is still extremely dangerous. He said Zawahiri's messages should not be discounted. "This man, unlike Bin Laden, is still an active terrorist. What he has to say to the faithful" still matters, Grenier said.

So what did Zawahiri say?
As the wire services reported, Zawahiri said Tehran was "cooperating with the Americans in occupying Iraq and Afghanistan." He slammed Iran for recognizing the two governments. He also criticized the Shiites for not calling for a jihad in Iraq against the "Crusader occupier." (In militant postings, "crusaders" is shorthand for U.S. troops in Iraq.)

"The guardian of Muslims in Tehran is cooperating with the Americans in occupying Iraq and Afghanistan and recognizes the two hireling governments there," al-Zawahiri said. Zawahiri has been increasingly singling out Iran and Shiites in his messages, most recently in April, describing the "Persians" as the enemy of Arabs and complicit in the occupation of Iraq.

The new video by As-Sahab, the terror group's propaganda arm, also featured clips of al-Qaida operations on various fronts, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, with prominent figures from the movement discoursing on their accomplishments over the year, Al-Jazeera said.

The U.S. Response:
A U.S. counter-terrorism official tells NBC News that U.S. agencies are mindful of the anniversary.  “The anniversary of September 11 serves as a solemn reminder of what we know to be the case. That is, we face the constant threat of terrorism and are working hard to prevent attacks against Americans and our allies," the official said. "This is a serious challenge for the nation, and we’re working hard to confront it.”

Complacency?
Ben Venzke, who analyzes videotaped terrorism statements for IntelCenter, said that Americans are becoming dangerously complacent about terrorism. He said he is reminded of the weeks before the 9-11 attacks, when the public (and media) were focusing on shark attacks and the latest turns in the Chandra Levy murder mystery. "If there's an attack, it's going to be out of the blue and blindside us," Venzke said. "If we could just manage to keep our attention span," he said, Americans would be better able to put any possible terrorist attack into perspective.

"They [terrorists] stay patient and focused, and we become an easier and easier target," Venzke said.

NBC News terrorism analyst Evan Kohlmann says, if Americans have become blasé about terrorist statements, it's partially Zawahiri's fault. "He keeps rehashing the same set of basic issues over and over again," Kohlmann said. "Given a country like the U.S., which has a collective attention span of 5 minutes, it is easy to see why people get bored."

Ironic Timing?
Of all weeks, Americans arguably should remain more attentive to al-Qaida claims now. The 9-11 anniversary is just a few days away, of course. And a London jury just today convicted three Islamic extremists for conspiracy to murder in a thwarted airplane-bomb attack.

In the case, prosecutors had argued that a group of British Muslims with ties to Pakistan had planned to use explosive hydrogen peroxide, disguised as a soft drink, to attack targets in the UK. But the jury could not reach a verdict on prosecutors' claims that they intended to target passenger jets flying from London to major North American cities with suicide attacks.

A jury in London found that Abdulla Ahmed Ali and coconspirators Assad Sarwar and Tanvir Hussain were guilty of conspiracy to murder by the use of hydrogen peroxide to make a bomb. But the jury failed to reach verdicts on charges against four other defendants. An eighth man was acquitted.

U.S. and British investigators stopped the attacks before they could materialize. But Venzke said that Americans should not assume that they are safe just because there have been no terror attacks on U.S. soil since 9-11.

"It's still al-Qaida," Venzke said. "It's still the group that killed 3,000 Americans."

There are those protecting us that are listening for sure despite the public's apathy.  Also, more dangerously, there are those with a radical Islam bent that are listening too.
Yes we are listening ,however too much media brings the politics of fear. We should always be aware and on task as far as terror is concerned.
Starting a war of aggresion in the wrong country did grave harm to the US. We are now in a more precarious position in the world. Taking the place of Isreal as the front of anger from the Muslim world. We will need to change our whole
foriegn policy structure to ensure security while becoming better global citizens.
Just because the media isn't carrying stories doesn't mean we're not doing anything
God save us if Barack Hussien Obama is elected. MSNBC Olberman, big Barack fan, was appalled at the showing of the Anniversary video tape of 9-11-01.  Sorry Mr. Olberman, we are at war with terrorist and they will hit us again. Maybe you should watch the video again, and never forget, as much as we all would like to forget it, we should not.
Thats just great. Are we a country that needs another attack to start listening again?
This is just another example of eight years of ineptness.  How half or near half the population can even consider the republican party for another term is beyond me.  Regardless who is running for the nomination, the republicans should not be given another chance.  They have had their chance.
This is agood time to ramp up security world wide.
The media is too busy promoting the anti war agenda of Obama to lend any creedance to the fact we are at war with anyone, even though they can't debunk 9-11 legitimately.
This report is right-- Americans cannot become complacent-- but the danger we face now is of a different nature.

In October, 2004 Osama Bin Laden publicly declared his next goal was to bankrupt the United States of America.  Now, almost  four years later, the Bush administration has brought us to the very brink of our own destruction.

Our federal debt is nearly $10 trillion, and we have nearly $100 trillion of liabilities we are not able to pay for (city, state, county debt, Social Security, medicare, etc.).  As a nation, we are insolvent.

Our wars in Afganistan and Iraq are draining us financially, weakening our military, and making us more vulnerable as a country.   We are indebted to countries who could be considered our enemies. And yet we do nothing about it except dig a deeper hole for ourselves, and for future generations.

Demand fiscal responsibility in Washington, bring our men and women home from foreign wars, and let's get this great nation back to where it needs to be.
Is the al-Qaida leadership really talking to the US population?  Surely this group, which is diligent in its efforts to understand its enemy, would understand very well our collective ADHD, and use that knowledge to their advantage. I am concerned that our own government, with its track record of shutting the barn door after the horse gets out, is the one not listening. They are ignoring the "chatter" and the talk. If there is another attack, it will be a result of our country's leadership's lack of ability to determine the best course of rectitude...vigilance.
Terrorist are like a virus-they can be dormit and when they get there frist chance they will come alive.Never forget Terorist, for they will attack when they can.
I dont think you (journalists) have the right to speak on behalf of the American people anymore. You who sing the praises of the Presidential candiate who wont even say the words, "terrorist" "holy war" "extremely dangerous". Even worse, these very REAL and EXTREME dangers were not even discussed on any level at the DNC!!  We are at war and we are in danger by people who do not want to democratically work things out with us. I am an American and I look for news and listen for the news that is coming out of the Middle East, daily. Typically, I have to go to www.bbc.com most of the time to find out what is really going on, because here in America our reporters just discuss the elusive democratic catch phrase "change", which still has nothing tangible to go alongside it. When the US press stops reporting their tired agenda, then maybe the American people (who have been lulled to sleep with your biased reporting) will have a chance to prepare and respond for the war that has been waged upon us.
Its unfortunate that the media only knows how to criticize, point fingers and look for who to blame. I see where our government gets it from.
I would think it would take a lot less time, energy and money to fix the problem. We all know what needs to be done, but are to worried about being politically correct. and so now cause the way out current leaders handled the situation and manage to have the whole world on our side and BLEW it! Our young men and women serving our county are getting killed for nothing, either bring them home or let them do what they are trained for and rout those mountains and remove all these scumbags once and for all!
Sorry, not worried.
I know that probably offends you media types, but I'm confident the right people are paying attention to whats happening. Thats not the same thing as being complacent. And, really, these guys are always running their mouths, haven't you figured that out yet?
You know as a Viet Nam Vet and as a child I remember hearing no one will ever attack the U.S.A. we are the strongest country in the world and I remember telling friends that assuming is the worst thing that we as Americans could do just because we are the strongest does not mean that we cannot be brought down. We as Americans should always be on Guard. As we all know that when you drop your guard is when you are the most likely to be knocked down. It is time to wake up America or else get taken down from another blindside by the Terrorist. We are not invincable. We can fall just as easy as falling a gaint Red Oak. John Doe, Summerville, Ga.
Remember before 9-11 we didn't pay any atention to al-Qaida and look what happen. For the most part of Americans didn't even know who they they were.
The said this and that and made a lot of noise, but realey didn't do anything we could think of.

Well, they may be making a lot of noise now and most of us are tired of hereing the same old stuff, but this gust may be what they may entend for us to do. Then when they think we are tired of they will hit us again wile we are asleep at the wheel again.
I would like to here that they are whipped out once and for all. But I think that is wishfull thinking sorry to say.
I am reading a book about the crusades, " Five Centuries of Holy War ".  It seems to me that Al-Qaida might be very up on this material.
I believe this also to be very good reading material for the U.S..

Some of this parallels what is happening today.
Al-Who?

I think a lot more people pay attention than you give them credit for. Of course, these articles have to be written in order for us to notice. What are we supposed to do, log onto terrorist websites everyday to read what they're up to?

There are probably a lot more Americans who would like updates about the state of terrorism in the world than there are people who care what color underwear Fergie peed today.
Crusaders? Holy War? Jihad? Good Lord! These al-Qaida clowns and their ideology are straight from the DARK AGES. No wonder we've stopped paying any attention. When they speak in terms relative to at least the 19th century (21st is pushing it), maybe then we'll be able to listen?
We should ignore the swill of al-Qaida.  Whether the civilian population is listening or not will not cause the idiots to attack American soil.  You can be sure that intelligence officials are paying attention.  We civilians do not and should not give these idiots our attention.  They have not attacked again because of the diligence of our government, which of course includes the military.  Be a part of the land of the free, and the home of the BRAVE.  Do not cower thinking that if you do not listen, they will punish you.  Stand up and act like men and women of this great nation.
Guess they ran out of rocks... Too busy with the camels too......
I am concerned that the playground bullys (Al-Q) will react to the media snub.
Ever since it was reported by the Washington Post that Hammas and Al-Q have been voted out of most of the Muslim Worlds ruling bodies, Al-Q and Hammas have been trying to win their way back in to the hearts and minds of the average terrorist cell.....
I fear that Obillary will loose touch and grip trying to please their constituents.
I sincerely hope that Barack Obama and John McCain have read p 422 of The 9/11 Commission Report!! Peter Olsson author of THE CULT OF OSAMA
I perceive an unfortunate sense of complacency in the US.  This is no time to let down our guard.  We must remain ever watchful, observant and focused.  For there are those in this world that will stop at nothing to murder us and our families and destroy our way of life.  While grim, these are the facts and we must stand up and face them.

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." -   Thomas Jefferson
If 9-11 or terrorism is mentioned during a political campaign it is said that the speaker is 'fear-mongering'.  Complacency may be part of it, but a large part may also be the scorn shown for not abiding the politco of popularity and mob rule.  Maybe that should be a story.
Yes, I believe John McCain is listening...
Unlike Obama that thinks our economical issues are more important. If we dont start paying attention AGAIN to Al-Qaida hatred, we might not have a country to worry about our economics.
The War on Terrorism is our country's biggest challenge. Bridget, NY
The american news media does not want to air threats by terrorist organizations as it lends importance to the Republican ticket and undermines the image of the Democratic candidate.
No suprise MSNBC and CNN do not want americans thinking about terrorism as we head into November.
Since when does NBC care about terrorism?  It's FEAR MONGERING, remember?

The reason that terrorism is not getting more coverage is that it helps Republican candidates. The media is biased towards the left, and any coverage of terrorism decreases the possibility of Obama being President.
I notice that FoxNews gives more coverage towards terrorism than other news organizations, such as Msnbc, CNN, ABC, etc.
This is just another case of how the media filters information getting to American people. Kind of sad really. They majored in journalism in college so they can now determine whats important for us to hear. It's kind of self-righteous in a way.
People seem to take the absence of an attack since 2001 as absence of intent. It is my great fear that the length of time since the last major attack on the US indicates the opposite. I think Al-qaida is determined to outdo their last move with something bigger and more devastating, and the operational difficulties are holding things up a little bit. These people operate on their own timetable, and when they are ready, it will happen again. That our attention has drifted elswhere is icing on the cake for them.
I agree, I don't give a damn what he says.  I just want him dead!
It seems that time does indeed heal wounds.  So well, in fact that even the scars of this tragedy have been forgotten by the media. I believe that someone wants all stories about al-Qaida out of the media, as not to remind the nation of the single-most important failure of the past 7 years:  Failing "catch" the terrorists that are responsible for these actions.  Thank you for running your story.  It seems that there is one journalist that cares.
Its not the public's job to be vigilant. It is the job of our (very expensive) intelligence and security organizations to be our watchdogs and keep us safe. This is their mission and they are paid well to do it. Public frenzy does nothing. It is my hope that more can be accomplished diplomatically once the incumbent retard leaves office to create understanding and a enlightened foreign policy.
Life in the Cosmos is fulfilled with love and hatred. You forget love then you only have hatred.
That's all I thought.
so very true, Americans have completly forgot abot 9/11 and it is so incredibly sad, we must not forget what happened, as soon as we forget they will strike again, we need to watch out for our fellow americans and stand up for eachother, they want a weak country and a weak people and we cannot give this to them!
I see little sense in the general public wringing it's hands in fear about what might happen. The government is aware of the threat and hopefully does all in it's power to thwart future attacks. Not sure what the author thinks John Q. Public should be doing.
Well, duh, this is like America!  We care more about who is on the cover of US weekly, or who won at the MTV awards.  We haven't defeated terrorism, our mission was not accomplished... one day it will happen again and everyone will wonder how, with all of our homeland security and the color coded terror alert, did this happen?  We fell asleep again.
The purpose of terrorist organizations is to spread terror through their messages. Ignoring them is the best defense, as their threats are often meaningless boasts about figments of their imagination.

They aren't giving away anything that would help us fight them anyway...
We must, as Americans, walk the fine line of not living in fear and being cautious.  I believe that we are doing a good job of this.  Some would have us believe that the threat of terrorism is more than it already is just to achieve political means, this is the problem of complacency.  The American public is tired of being scared.
I can't believe I'm just hearing about this. I got home from work at about 6:00pm, after listening to the news all day on the radio, and turning on the news at home. How many people don't know about this, and the way the US media hides it??
Yes, that is how it works. As long as the incidents are relatively small, (and even 9-11 was) the public won't be serious about them. Sooner or later though, they will pull off something that kills millions and perhaps takes out an entire city or two.

But the key to fighting this war is fighting their ideology, acknowledging, and publicly discussing how it is just orthodox Islam, exactly as Brigitte Gabriel does. The ideology of Koran, H'adith and sharia require world domination and state that Muslims are the superior people. Mohamed said that Arabs are the superior race. Until we confront and root out the dogma, this will not end. There are threads of Islam that are reformist, but they are not the majority.

Ideology and economics drives terrorism. Always has. The last century saw the rise and fall of Communism. The empire of Islam only broke 100 years ago after more than 1000 years. We have to stop fooling ourselves, liberal and conservative alike.
Nobody in America cares because we trust our government under the watchful eye of President Bush.  He has created a safer homeland.
I agree stay alert. But the media doesn’t have to give them air time and help spread they tails. As long as the right agents are paying attention and the NSA is doing their job. We should be able to go on as normal as we possible.
I think this is great.  Why should a murderer get a platform for their twisted views?  If someone wants to investigate these videos behind the scenes, by all means do it.  But let's stop giving these lunatics free PR by airing their propaganda every time they have something to say?  They use our own media against us...this is the best way to take away one of their weapons.  It has absolutely nothing to do with assuming we're safe.
It stands to reason that so close to elections that there would be yet another series of "terror" warnings.  Yes the significance of that happening around 9-11 can not and should not be overlooked, but at the same time we as Americans have to look at the idea that it may just be something as simple as a terrrorist organization trying to control US Elections by putting fear into it voting populace.  The whole Idea is to tople the US, by any means necessary.  That means if toppling a couple buildings and crashing a handfull of passneger jets doesnt work, they could always bankrupt us by keeping us involved in a neverending war with troops numbering into the hundred thousands against a smaller force of a couple thousand terrorists.
Those sworn to protect America listen. The problem is that too many of those being protected believe that America itself is the cause of the hatred of terrorists... and others are willing to surrender their freedom and the freedom of others simply to avoid conflict. Then, of course, are the politicians... who blame the President or Karl Rove or Dick Cheney...
Unfortunately, there is an air of complacency with regard to terrorism, unless of course, Republicans are using the threat to scare dim-witted US citizens into voting for their John McCain. I'm tired of hearing that President Bush has done a wonderful job of keeping us safe. Indeed, Ben Venzke hit the nail on the head. Al Qaeda is a ruthless yet patient group. They toy with our fears, use threats to manipulate policy, and then when everyone starts to relax, they act. The result is psychological terrorism as well as the evil physical act. They want us to live in fear. I'm sure there is rejoicing in their ranks watching our economy falter, our good people suffer, and our country become divided because of the misguided debacle that is the Bush/Cheney Iraq war initiative.

I can only pray that Sen. Barack Obama will be elected and help restore our standing as a leader and willing partner in the global community, while protecting our citizens and national interests with wisdom, diplomacy, and yes, an iron fist when absolutely necessary.
Thank You President Bush for remaining faithful to your duty of protecting us (US) even though most of us are ungrateful to you.  Thank You that my family and I can go to bed tonight without being afraid.  Thank You Mr President.
It is the goal of terrorists to trick us into changing our society in ways that rational people would not accept. For example, the patriot act. It is our responability to go on with our lives and not worry about when and where the next attack WILL happen. The only way to truely defeat terror IS to ignore its message.
Americans and the entire civilized world need to be mindful of Al-Qaida. What they need most is a safe haven and friendly government where their operatives can obtain passports, where they can operate their training bases with relative impunity, where they can plug into the internet and transfer money to their operatives and send coded messages. The only reason Al-Qaida has not had any major attacks since 9/11 is that they are holed up in an inaccessible and remote area where none of the above exist. This is the danger of leaving Irag before the Iraqi goverment can secure its borders and interior. Al-Qaida would move in and gain these vital abilities.
