A prominent Taliban commander boasted to NBC News in an interview that Afghan officials are aiding his forces in fighting U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan.

In the interview, wanted Taliban commander Sirajuddin Haqqani said that the corrupted Afghan officials are a key to the Taliban's military success. “There are some people with government portfolios who are supporting us because they are worried about their own security,” Haqqani said. “They inform us of the movements of U.S. and NATO troops. There have even been some instances where they have assisted us in carrying out attacks,” he added.

Afghan officials characterized Haqqani's comments as baseless "propaganda."

Sirajuddin Haqqani, 28, controls the Taliban in the Afghan border areas with Pakistan, and in the area surrounding Kabul. Under tight security, he consented to an interview with NBC News’ Mushtaq Yusufzai in a safe house in Khost, the Afghan province that borders Pakistan.

An NBC producer interviews Taliban commander Sirajuddin Haqqani (whose back faces the camera). Haqqani would not reveal his face.

Haqqani is the son of Jalaluddin Haqqani, one of the most feared Afghan commanders, who fought against the Soviet occupation during the 1980s. Jalaluddin, now aged and in failing health, lives in Khost and has passed the reigns of the Haqqani terror network on to his second son, Sirajuddin.

Jalaluddin Haqqani once had strong ties with the CIA, according to published acounts. But now he and his son are wanted men. The U.S. military has placed a bounty of $200,000 on Sirajuddin Haqqani’s head.

The New York Times in today’s edition reported that: “The Haqqani Network and other militants operating in the tribal areas along the Afghan border are said by American intelligence officials to be responsible for increasingly deadly and complex attacks inside Afghanistan, and have helped al-Qaeda establish safe havens in the tribal areas.”

In the interview with NBC News, his first ever, Sirajuddin Haqqani admitted that Arab and other foreign fighters had joined him in fighting coalition forces in Afghanistan.

“We are in trouble,” Haqqani said. “We are occupied by foreign forces so we asked our Muslim brothers from all over the world to come join us and help us. And they have come.”

The difference, Haqqani explained, is that the Arabs and other foreigners are under his control while Afghan President Hamid Karzai asks for help too but remains under the control of the foreigners.

Haqqani said that he was the planner behind January’s terrorist attack on Kabul’s luxury Serena Hotel, where eight people died. He also claimed responsibility for the failed assassination attempt on President Karzai at an Independence Day parade in the capital in April.

“Yes, I organized those attacks,” Haqqani said “but I had help from a serving Afghan military general.”

Haqqani also said that Pakistan was once a pro-Mujahideen state and now is under U.S. pressure to kill its own people.  As a result, he said, “it has become my moral and religious responsibility to defend the Pakistani Taliban from U.S. and Pakistani army attacks.”

“Afghanistan under coalition watch has practically become a narco-state," said Owais Ahmad Ghani, the governor of Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province, in a recent interview about the challenges of waging the war on terror in an unruly neighborhood. Click the image above to watch the video.

NBC’s Mushtaq Yusufzai spent months arranging the interview. He contacted local Pakistani Taliban commanders in North Waziristan and asked them to try and make contact with Haqqani across the border in Afghanistan. Yusufzai was told that because Haqqani is a wanted man, he cannot move around freely and no longer crosses the border into Pakistan.

Yuzufzai waited two days in Thall, a hamlet near the Pakistani tribal agency of Kurram, bordering Khost Province in Afghanistan.

“Finally four 4X4 pick-ups came for me in the early morning,” Yusufzai said. “They told me they were taking me to see their training camps and areas under their control. I was afraid of being killed by either American forces or Pakistani troops on the border or both,” Yusufzai said. “But they told me not to worry, they knew all the safe smuggling routes into Afghanistan.”

Yusufzai described the trip. “After two hours driving, we reached Sabaro in Khost Province, a village under their control,” he said. “The Taliban were manning the check posts and there were no Afghan army soldiers anywhere around…I was taken first to one house and waited 1&1/2 hours before being taken to a second house. I still had no idea that I would finally meet Haqqani,” Yusufzai said.

“When I entered the second house, I walked into a room full of Taliban fighters. There was one man off to the side who appeared different from the others. He had no weapon. This was Sirajuddin Haqqani. No one outside of his close circles had ever met him before,” Yusufzai said.

There are no known pictures of Sirajuddin and he refused to show his face to the NBC camera during the interview.

“I asked him about the allegations that he is running training camps inside Pakistan,” Yusufzai said.

“Look, I am sitting here in Khost, why should I go to Pakistan,” Haqqani answered. “I know the Pakistanis will capture me and hand me over to the Americans. I will stay here and liberate Afghanistan from the occupation forces,” he said.

“Soon you will see good results,” Haqqani said. “The Taliban will again control this great Muslim country.”

A U.S. military spokesman said that some of Haqqani's comments smack of propaganda. Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Zamarai Basharin agreed. He called Sirajuddin Haqqani's statements "propaganda" by the enemy. He said that Afghan officials have investigated Haqqani's claims and found no evidence that any Afghan government officials were been involved in any attacks against the Afghan state, its people or U.S. and NATO forces.

I believe this article whole heartedly.  We are not welcome in this country nor any other country we have tried to impose our way of life on.  Lets get out, focus on what used to make us leaders, take care of ourselves and only help those that want help.
People like him shouldn't even get a trial.  they should be eliminated on the spot.
The Afghan problem is much more complicated with involvement of America and western armies, Iran, India and Pakistan. Iran considers America as its enemy. Current Afghan regime enjoyed strong ties with Iran and now ruling with help of America. India has strong ties with current Afghan govt and both have anti pakistani motives. Pakistan is an important ally of America and without its help war on terror could not be won. Pakistanis think that America, India and Afghan govt are involved in destablizing Pakistan to realize breakup of Pakistan suggested by CIA. Winning Afghan war without Afghan Pushthuns is not possible who are becoming more and more distracted from current Afghan govt. Also Taliban are dominantly Pushthuns. Continuing military operations in border areas of Pakistan are also turning locals against Pakistani forces and America which is benefitting Taliban.
Reports such as this one, are not surprising in such situations.
These are all your men in past so interact with them in politicall wayexplain your presence in there country and try to make a soloution of it .To safe the country Pakistan and world from Terrorism.
If this was  1776, NBC news would be Hung as a trader.
They had our enemy in front of the Camera & they didn't turn them over to the US Military or Nato?
I'm sorry, in war, there is no free speech for the enemy.
sadly i hope hes not correct about the narco comment but a part of me feels he is
This is a message that I've beleived for some time. The corrupt teachings of the people, the many different factions/religions of how they view community and life. There was a point in time when I thought the Muslims/Arabs were undoubtly the most religious people in prayer and living. This is far from the truth, in reference to group violence they are just as the kkk, skinheads, arian nation....etc. Over the years that we have been in this war, we have witnessed the turncoat agenda of their sectionalism and therefore this taught way of life against outsiders is inherent. Get our troops out of the region. They are oil rich, they can pay for there own rebuilding. American greed is destroying our country.
Since when i it illegal for a journalist to interview a criminal? Do Hey Geoff: You want to imprison Ed Bradley, Geraldo Rivera and Barbara Walters, too? Get with it. This is America, not Taliban controlled Khost Province. Journalists interview criminals all the time and we learn from it. To arrest them for bringing the truth to all of us is against the what this very country stands for and what we are fighting to keep! This Haqqani idiot want to take that right away from everyone in the world, let alone Afghanistan.

This interview is incredible. It sheds light on what's going on and shows how bad this Haqqani character is. It may also take an Afghan traitor down. Now, that is good reporting!
he shudnt be prosecuted. He didnt aid the enemy. he talked to a Taliban Leader as a new correspondent. Maybe if more people were allowed to talk to these people, Afganistan wouldn't be in the predicament they are now in. But to have Afgan Military & Govt Officials helping the Taliban, now that is a diffierent matter. Generals even advising the Taliban. Now if they could find out who they are and prosecute them, things might change. Lets HOLE so for all the innocent people that are being killed or injured. To hurt woman and children from either side is just not right. Lets hope some sort of stability comes soon.
I would assume Russia would be quick to help win this war excepting one little draw back, they hate George W. Bush.
thats fine. I understand and accept
These guys are living in a pipe dream. The Taliban has no right to occupy Aghanistan or Pakistan. THEY are the illegal occupiers. And NBC needs to turn over information on this guys whereabouts. Freedom of Press is one thing, but treason cannot be tolerated, and withholding info that can lead to the capture or killing of Sirajuddin Haqqani should not go unpunished.
Since when does press get consent to hangout with known terrorists, and whats the point of interveiwing, and hearing what a wanted man has to say. If he has something to say it should be heard in court. If that. I see it a needless way risk your life, whats the point. Nothing was acheived by that interveiw.
So this guy is wanted by the US/British armies and (I assume) can't be tracked down, yet a reporter from NBC cn find him?

Why doesn't NBC spend this valuable resource to help the US army find these terrorists instead of getting interviews with them. We want these people behind bars, not getting intervie on TV/print or any other media.

This is disgraceful!
Oh my gosh. Interviewing is not aiding the enemy. Hearing from another's perspective is not aiding the enemy. Its called journalism......You only say that because he has a foreign sounding name. If Tom Brokaw was doing the interview; you'd say he was fearless. This man is just trying to do his job, and allow readers to read a perspective they don't normally read. If you just think of a group of people as "the enemy" and don't ever try to understand the way they think, you're not doing yourself or anyone else a favor.
The comments made by this leader of the taliban are not above question, but on the other hand it answers a lot of questions
When is enough enough. the West should pack up and move out. The British, French and Italians were never successful in any occupation if Islamic countries. The USA become involved during the Russian assistance to Afghanistan now they sacrafice young American lives and those of other Nato Countries and are stabbed in the back!
I agree with you this has actually gotten out of hand.  How many times are we going to allow an enemy to spew propaghanda to justify an unruly third world society
That's about right.
Geoff, Mushtaq Yusufzai is a NBC reporter  and i dont see why he should be prosecuted for the things u claim he should be...
When the Russians invaded  Afghanistan and the Taliban fought against them, the Taliban were called “freedom fighters”. America  invades Afghanistan and the former  “freedom fighters” are called  “terrorist”. How many of the “9/11 terrorist” were Taliban? I heard they were Saudis with Saudi passports.
Why would you put this interview into public circulation? Why would you give this guy a forum for his hate? If this were WWII, would you give Hitler a chance to put his spin in print? It makes no sense. We're at war with this guy. He is a sworn enemy of us and our troops. Don't give him any help in putting his message out to the public.
Now thats hilarious - NBC & GE are helping Iran...
oh finally some thing close to the reality,i hope nowamericans will stop using Pakistan as a scapegoat for their failures.
propaganda....and I'm sure he get inside info, but you can be sure this taliban leader days are numbered...a smart bomb will soon lock in on him and his buddies
NBC & Ge helping Iran kill also ?
Why dont we just power up that missle defense system and the hubble, point it at these guys and start melting their faces... imaging walking into the cities they had control of after a few lazers started restoring order.
My son is in the Army in Afghanistan. It is the war we should have waged, not the one in Iraq. If people truly want those responsible for 9/11 they will support beefing up the forces in Afghanistan. With the massive prisoner escape and this type of mindset, this is where we need to be.
Thanks for giving the enemy a mouthpiece to undercut us, our allies, and the Afgan Government. Well done...
I find it  sickening that we will help protect the identity of a terrorist _)*&)&(^( like him but we will exploit our troops and the nations CIA FBI to expose them and make their job that much more dangerous and harder the media is just as bad SHAME on all of them that does it for the wrong reasons(ratings)
Conducting an interview is not aiding and abetting the enemy.
Now we know the villages under the Taliban control just bomb them into oblivian.  It will help with the world drug trade!  Smuggling routes are known to them.  What do you think they're smuggling?
The issue is the lack of confidence in the Afgan government and NATO capacity to provide security. We should always expect people to side with the group they feel will win and be able take revenge.
This was a great article, it had a lot of very good useable information.
I was there from Jan 07 to Feb 08 and know that he is telling the truth.  I have seen it myself.
wrong statments
you, reporter, are a jerk. you have the intel on this dudes location, and you did not share it with the dudes enemy, aka... nato..... what else do you know
What I'm wondering is with all our great military might of our country, and out technology that can not be matched by anyone else out there in the world, is that we couldn't trace this reporter and just level the place he was at.  I'm sorry sometimes one life or a few must be sacaficied to keep many from being killed by these cave dewling, cowards that say they are all great and can defeat us but yet they still hide.  Funny isn't it.
While we've been bogged down in Iraq these scumbags have been able to have their way bullying and intimidating local villagers to create so-called safe zones. I can't wait for these guys to get the full treatment once we're out of Irag. They are such courageous warriors who love to kill innocent people with brainwashed suicide bombers.
you see the reality is quite different form propaganda to blame pakistan all this
Really. Or why didn't he turn the location of the safehouses over to the coalition forces/intelligence community
Where are the journalistic ethics here??  Like it or not, the truth is that patriots don't root for the enemy, and they don't bring us their propaganda either.  Come on MSNBC, what are you thinking??
They didn't arrest Jane Fonda, why arrest this one?
I am not suprised that an Afghan general is helping the Taliban. Things are so corrupted and the real conditions so far and removed from the American public, that we have no way of knowing what is really going on there. Can we trust a US military who has time and time again declared Iraqis are killed in self defense, only to reverse course later on and say, "oops, we were mistaken, they were innocent bystanders who were killed."
what is amazing to me is that a news reporter can get to one of the most wanted men in the world, but our own intellengnce cant seem to. Whats up with that? Are we that dumb? Or is the Bush administratration playing games like they did in 911?
When you are actually able to purchase brain cells...if that's the case, I believe I've seen a picture of DICKCheney shaking Saddams hand, perhaps he should be locked up, as well as  every CIA agent that worked closely with Taliban during its struggle against the USSR....moron
We live in an age where the occupier becomes the liberator and the oppressed the criminal who needs to be prosecuted for aiding and abetting!! Lopsided, isnt't?!
Thats what the Pakistan government keeps pleading that the insurgency in Afghanistan is 90% indiginous and NATO troops controll only areas around Kabul but no one believes it. This article proves it very much however, Afghan and NATO troops find it easy to scape goat Pakistan for their failures. It is tragedy of errors.
Geoff obviously doesn't understand how the media is there to tell a story...from both points of view.  The media has greater access to those who the US is looking for.  If you dont think the US military is tracking a great majority of those in the media....it goes to show how naive people like him really are.
Dan Rather next on your list to persecute, Geoff :P
