In a rare move, one of al-Qaida's highest-ranking leaders has conducted an on-camera interview with a journalist and, in the process, called for the destruction of Pakistan's government.

It was the first time since 2002 that any top al-Qaida official has taken the security risk of sitting down for an interview with a bonafide journalist.

Abu Mustafa al-Yazid, an Egyptian whom U.S. intelligence officials have identified as the al-Qaeda's third highest-ranking official, sat for an interview with Najeeb Ahmad, a reporter for Geo TV. Geo TV is a private Pakistani television channel.

In the interview, Yazid, also known as Sheikh Saeed, called for the destruction of Pakistan's government which he said had "betrayed" the jihadis. Yazid swore that al-Qaida would recapture Afghanistan. And he reiterated al-Qaida's position that "all Americans, not just the American government" are the enemies of Islam.

The interview took place in Khost in eastern Afghanistan. Ahmad, the Geo reporter, is the president of the Karachi Press Club and said he used a Palestinian intermediary to arrange the interview.  It took three months to arrange and took place a few days ago, Geo said. Ahmad traveled to Peshawar, near the Afghan border, where he was given dark glasses and driven to the interview site, according to Geo who called the interview "a worldwide exclusive".

Veteran Operative:
Yazid is a veteran al-Qaida operative. He was involved in the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1982, and befriended al-Qaida's No. 2, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, while in Egypt. Yazid joined the Afghan jihad in 1998, after first linking up with Osama Bin Laden in Sudan.

U.S. officials have said that Yazid rose to his current position within the past year. Prior to that, he had been "chief financial officer and leader of al Qaeda's finance committee," said the officials. Some U.S. investigators believe he was the ultimate source of the money wired to Mohammed Atta, ringleader of the 9-11 hijackers, before the September 11th attacks.

Indeed, in the 9-11 Commission report, the authors described Yazid (referred to as Sheikh Saeed) as a "chief financial manager" who opposed the plan to attack the U.S. on 9-11.

"Mullah Omar is reported to have opposed this course of action for ideological reasons rather than out of fear of U.S. retaliation. He is said to have preferred for al Qaeda to attack Jews, not necessarily the United States. KSM [Khalid Sheik Mohammed] contends that Omar faced pressure from the Pakistani government to keep al Qaeda from engaging in operations outside Afghanistan. Al Qaeda's chief financial manager, Sheikh Saeed, argued that al Qaeda should defer to the Taliban's wishes. Another source says that Sheikh Saeed opposed the operation, both out of deference to Omar and because he feared the U.S. response to an attack," according to the 9-11 Commission report.

Yazid succeeded Abu Ubaida al-Masri, who died of hepatitis in Pakistan, about a year ago.

Ben Venzke, an expert on al-Qaida propaganda, says that Yazid is "the most senior person who is publicly visible" in al-Qaida today.

In the recent television interview, Yazid says the government of Pakistan has done the most harm to Islam of any Islamic state. The mujahadeen protected Pakistan from the Soviet Army and then Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf  "betrayed us," he said. Musharraf, he told Geo, had allied himself with "the modern day pharaoh and violated our trust." He added, as Bin Laden has stated since 1998, that "all Americans are our enemy now not just the American government."

Yazid swore that al-Qaida will retake Afghanistan, and he and claimed in an interesting bit of bureaucratic rivalry that al-Qaida is not a creation of Bin Laden but has its roots in Egypt. al-Qaida and Egyptian Islamic Jihad merged in June 2001.

Yazid confirmed that al-Qaida was responsible for the June suicide bombing at the Danish Embassy in Islamabad. A Saudi terrorist came from Mecca to "avenge the Prophet" for Danish cartoonists' "blasphemy," Yazid said. "We insured there was no collateral damage," he claimed.

Rare Interview:
This is the first interview of an al-Qaida leader since May 2002, when two key figures in the 9-11 attacks, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Ramzi bin al-Shibh, were questioned by a reporter for the al Jazeera television network. That interview aired months later, on the first anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. (Pakistani forces in Karachi arrested bin al-Shibh in Karachi a day before the interview was broadcast.)

The U.S. has long targeted al-Qaida's third-highest-ranking officials, because they believe the men who occupy that position are the chief operational officers of the terrorist group. Former CIA Director George Tenet wrote in his book that the No. 3 is al-Qaida's director of international operations. "In particular, our focus was on the individuals in charge of planning operations against the United States," Tenet  wrote.

Unlucky Number 3:
Since 2001, the U.S. has killed or captured five of the terror group's Number 3s:

--In November 2001, U.S. fighter jets bombed the hideout of Mohammed Atef in Kabul, killing him.

--In February 2002, CIA and Pakistani intelligence officials captured Abu Zubaydah in the Pakistani city of Faisalabad, following a gunfight in which Zubaydah was severely wounded.

--In March 2003, CIA and Pakistani intelligence officers captured Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a house in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

--In May 2005, Pakistan intelligence officers captured Abu Faraj al-Libi as he rode a motorbike through a cemetery in the Pakistani city of Mardan. (Haithem al-Yemeni, a potential successor to al-Libi, was killed by a Predator in Pakistan near the Afghanistan border a week later).

--In December 2005, Hamza Rabia, Abu Faraj's successor, was killed in a Predator attack in the village of Asorai, in western Pakistan near the town of Mirali.

Today, U.S. officials say that the current No. 3, Yazid, is a target of the U.S. as well.

Very good article. We must always remember that Al-Qaida hates all Americans because they consider us to be impure infidels. We can't negotiate with them, nor do we have to feel guilty or embarrassed that the war in Afghanistan is taking longer than we originally anticipated. eastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan have always been difficult places to deal with. When the British Empire was at its height 100 years ago it controlled all of the Indian subcontinent except for what is now northern Pakistan. We are also helping to defend Western civilization including freedom of the press in our fight against Islamofascism.
During this whole time, they have been gaining in numbers, and can replace a general on the field as fast as we can. They are doing EXACTLY what WE traind them to do, waste our money, spinning our wheels. In the WRONG COUNTRY-du I wounder if this is why they kick our ass time after time. Russia had over 200,000 troops, on the ground during there ocupation, and could not find him!! Tthanks to US, the USMC Force Recon who taught, and supplied them!Howe convient to get film just before election time gets the FEAR going!
It's one thing to declare the American government an enemy of Islam, and another thing to declare all Americans the enemy of Islam. I suppose this means that every American he encounters is going to be regarded as his personal enemy, even one of Islamic faith.  No wonder the Al- Qaida is seen as a maniac outfit with no sense of justice or humanity ,or respect for the life of any individual who is not in perfect agreement with them. They even consider certain children and babies as their enemy. How can this man think that he is doing Islam and those of the Islam faith a service with such a stupid declaration?
As sad as the September 11th attacks were, and all the great Americans that were killed, and injured I have to agree with this judges decision.
Our pathetic President has taken almost all of our freedoms away by making up his own laws, and changing the laws if he knows they'll fail, or the laws don't go his way. These Terrosit would be convicted if Bush, and his goonies wouldn't have broken the torture laws. unfortunately these terrorist will not be punished as they should be legally because of Bush's tactics. Way to go Bush, and Cheney.

Sherry U. Bedford Texas
Way to go Predator operating team, You guys have done more damage than any other wing of the US forces. God speed and Allah speed.
I believe that this clearly illustrates that it is Afghanistan, and not Iraq, that should have remained as the focus of the 'War on Terror'.  George Bush had a clear, though hidden agenda to wage war on Iraq before he became president.  His administration seemed to regret having to deal with Afghanistan as it detracted from his real goal of 'regime change' in Iraq.  Had the US focused solely on Afghanistan, this war would have been successfully resolved years ago.  As it is, we have not cleared Afghanistan of terrorists.  We have only succeeded in de-stabilizing an already turbulent Pakistan and opening up Iraq to international terrorists.  Iraq needed to be dealt with firmly, but to remove all of the existing control systems (ie. Saddam Hussien, the Baath Party and the military) without putting anything in its place was disasterous.  Now we have paid up to 1 trillion dollars for nothing in Iraq and have taken our eyes off Afghanistan.  Is it any wonder that the Taliban expects to take back the whole of Afghanistan one day?
This is all a bunch of silly nonsense. For one, he's one of the 'most wanted' by U.S. intelligence and yet they claim they can't find him. Second, a journalist from Pakistan can get a sit-down with this guy? Give us all a break! These 'videos', which are 'secretly handed in' etc., all seem politically timed and for all we know, could be a bunch of actors who are being used to mislead the public and pull policy strings.
The brave Sheikh Saeed just like the brave Osama Bin Laden hide and brainwash children to strap on a bomb.Saeed & Bin Laden are cowards keeping the true muslims down.Muslims need to wake up and strap a bomb on anyone, like Saeed & Bin Laden, who are killing their wives, children & others true to the real muslim faith. It wont stop until true muslims put an end to this madness themselves.
All americans are enemies of islam? He'd be a little upset if we treated all muslims as enemies of america. God why are extremists (on both sides) such idiots?
What a shame that a journalist can find these people for an interview, but after 5 years hunting, OUR wonderful Administration Can't!
Goes to show there is MORE behind this WAR, then just the "Freedom" of the Afghanistan/Iraqi People!
Al-Qaida must be dealt with, and swiftly.  As Iraq improves more troops should be sent to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.  Major talks should be set up with Pakistan and their leaders should step up to the plate to aid us.  Now is the time to make the world safer!
Read carefully the comment "all Americans are the enemies of Islam." We cannot let our guard down for even a single moment.  A precipitous pullout from any part of the region is just that. Pakistan is the largest danger for all western nations.
Why would you publish anything at all about these people?
there have and always will be bad guys, we live with it. why do we, our leadership, have to change the world when the rest go on fixing what they can.
Pakistan really has a raw deal here.
All these guys are in Pakistan, not Irag or Afghanistan, so what is the Commander in Chief doing? At least Obama would consider moving operations to where the Terrorists are.
thats why we (''the Goverment''), need to make everything like glass over there and starte over, yazid and his al-qaida buddy's are'nt going away any time soon!
There seems to be a clear gap between the American capabilities of capturing the no.3 man to the capturing of the no.1 man. You'd think that one of these top leaders would have led us a bit closer to the locations of Osama.
These people truly have no sense of humor. I'm looking forward to hearing from "the new # 3". Maybe he'll have something more interesting to say than the same old blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
One idiot gets the interview of his life, and in doing so gives fame and fortune (along with a huge amount of media coverage) to one of most brutal and savage people on the face of the planet. This is not good media coverage I'm afraid to say...
It's funny how we can catch fugitives within weeks, but an entire world including the US effort, can't nab a terrorist in 7 years.
since al quaida usually backs up what they say, if they are intent on taking back afghanistan, then the allies should act with massive force now and wipe them out
al Yazid, in his stated objective of retaking Afghanistan, indicates that Obama's argument is correct, when he says that our unjustified excursion into Iraq has deviated our efforts from completing our fight against al Qaida in the country that trained the terrorists in the first place.
Hmmm, let's try this again.,,

If the new number-3 declares that all Americans are an enemy of Islam, in effect he endangers all American citizens of Middle-Eastern descent, perpetuating extreme prejudice, the likes of which will likely reach further than levels currently seen and experienced. This circle of hatred will never end. It is a sad state of existence for the entire human race.
Our revenge didn't and still doesn't match the crime. Another president, another time would've gone to Afghanistan and engaged the Taliban in a fashion so as not to destroy what little there was of the country.

Unfortunately this president grabbed onto the towers' attack as an oportunity, and the rest, the enrichment of himself and his pals etc. is, or should be by now, well known.

So many criminals coming together in one administration, unbelievable! And voting them in twice? No wonder Arabs say that all of us are their enemy.

I remember the first week of the fool's baghdad
invasion, there was a report out of Iraq of an
Iraqi woman crying out to an onsight reporter:
"Please somebody tell the American people what their military is doing to us here!"

Years, it'll take years to return to our being thought of like that woman.
The story 'sounds' as if Al-Qaida appoints it's No. 3 person, then is giving them up to take the heat off Nos. 1 and 2. If so, it keeps things interesting and seems to be working.

If "all Americans are enemies of Islam than all of Ialam is an "Enemy of Americans"  We should never forget that.
Either the Journalist is ignorant, mean or just plain dumb - or bin Laden is ignorant, mean and just plain dumb. To say that "all Americans are our enemy now not just the American government." is about as stupid as saying that All Viruses are Enemies of Mankind. So what is really being said is "The World at Large is Enemy Islam" which would include most Muslims...also.  The TRUTH is that the Arab world works with the Anglo-Swiss-Jewish Banking System leaders and their families to screw the world up and make it a place of death and misery! Why don't Islamist wake up and see the TRUTH? The Swiss Banker Mafia go around the world putting various Banks of various countries out of business - NOT some dumb farm boys from Middle-America. Who put the Chillabbi Family out of business? It was a combination of Arab-Anglo-Swiss-Jewish Banksters who work together to create the evil of the world - not American people who could be Indians, Black Africans, Spanish or other racial descendants. To say that ALL Americans are enemies of Islam is off the charts of dumb. Point the fingers at the real perpetrators of evil - who you people are most likely working along with -- since you use their money to create havoc as well as they do.
where is the actual interview? i'm sure this guy didn't go out of his way and travel for 3-4 days just so some other random reporter could do a summary! ... show us the clip
I think this is a blow to the Bush Administration for saying Bin Laden was the one who started al-Qaida,plus the trust that we put into pakistan is a big mistake I think.
Lol. Incredibly stupid move...
Why does the news/media control the emotions and fears of the world. Without the news Radicals and Politicians would gain no ground.  The phrase that bothers me is,  "all Americans are our enemy now not just the American government." Why use the "commoners of the land" for political or personal exploits.

Hate is stupid, but to instill fear is childish- grow up!
I think we should invite al-Yazid to the USA, where we can talk about things.  Anyone here like to 'talk' to yazid?  We could convince him of a few things.
I think the most important part of this article is something many in the West either forget or choose not to recognize:  "all Americans, not just the American government" are the enemies of Islam.
This is the enemy.  He can not be reasoned with, bought off, or appeased.  The only language they understand is superior force and we should not take the pressure off of him until he and his kind are eliminated.
It is time to open up the lawless tribal areas of Pakistan to our military and intelligence forces and let them do their work.
Here you are, the number three dirtbag wants to target "all Americans" and Barak Obama says he wants a diplomatic and political solution to our differences. How do you diplomatically approach a moron who's "religion" tells him to kill you and your family if you dont submit to his demands? The big mistake that Bush made was that he didnt use the "nuclear solution" on Sept.12,2001.
Why give an interview now is the question. What is going on behind the scenes. Is this the go signal to take out Musharaf? Or an acknowledgement to Obama's "let's talk" proposition. Before, this is seen as a good thing, just remember Japan was "talking" to us even as their fleet was steaming out to Pearl Harbor. So talking in itself means nothing. Just what is Al Qaeda up to?
hey jack partlow-

he "reiterated" bin laden's stance that all americans are the enemies of islam not just the govt...a stance that Al Qaeda and Bin laden has held since....1998 (pre GWB)...they hated you and your children long before the current administration even contemplated running for office.....try to remember that when you are throwing blame around...here is a concept blame the al qaeda murderers and hold them responsible for their own acts...
This intervieww points up the concern almost all of us in the hinterlands have had concerning the appearant capitulation of Al-Queda in Iraq.  They aren't stupid.  Much like the Soviet's plan of the 60's to start "brush fires" in so many areas of the world that our military would be stretched to the point of breaking.  And what better place to regroup than in Pakistan where the ultimate prize of Nuclear arms is within their reach?!
AMERICA IS THE ONES TO BLAME!!!!!!!!!
STOP TRYING TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!
Agree with John Doe of Seattle.  Where is the video clip of the interview? I could care less what two reporters tell me. I would like to hear it out of the horse's mouth. The true task of reporters in the world today is that of transcribers, not bull-bleep artists. Just show me the transcript.
Radical Islam is the true enemy of the world. In America they are enjoying the freedom to express
anything, even being critical of Christian religion, but if Christian happen to practice their religion in Iran, Iraq,Saudi Arabia they are dead. BARBARIC ISLAM IS THE DEVIL IN THE WORLD.
THESE ISLAMIC RADICALS HAVE BEEN SAYING IT FOR AT LEAST 2,000 YEARS. THEY HATE AND WANT TO KILL SOME FACTION OF PEOPLE. THEY ARE WAR MONGERS .THEY DON'T WANT PEACE. THEY HAVE NO CONCEPT OF WHAT PEACE IS. WE AS AMERICANS DO, AND WE SHOULD FIGHT FOR IT NO MATTER WERE IN THE WORLD.WE HAVE TO GO TO PRESERVE OUR PEACE AT HOME.I WISH IN MY HEART WE COULD ERADICATE THEM FOREVER.BEN LADEN SAID", WE WILL DESTROY YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN IN YOU OWN NEIGHBORHOOD.I'M WAITING AND WON'T YOU BE SURPRISED OF WHAT I HAVE FOR YOU.
You know, if the press didn't give these jokers a voice, this would all fade away. These poor people who have not much going for them see this stuff in the media and see a chance to become famous by strapping on explosives and becoming the next big headline, to be sent to heaven a hero and greeted by  72 lovely ladies. Don't give them the air time and they will wither on the vine.
What the USA should be doing is redeploying all combat troops in Iraq to Afganistan. Then sweep these terrorists out of the worlds existance! If Pakistan doesn't want to do more to help, I say screw there sovernty and sweep the areas bordering Afganistan anyways.

Mike Flagler, Portland, OR
Seems to me that we are to soft on Al-Qaida. Being shot is to easy of a death. I propose that we start cutting off the heads of terrorists. Kill them in the same brutal fashion that they kill us. Why should we be held to the Geneva convention while fighting a army or group that isn't a signitore of the convention. Sometimes you got to fight fire with fire.
what ever happened to the good ol nukes, look how quick that world war 2 ended!!one or two of those and it would break there back, game over.USAF Veteran.EOD.
The common denominator in all this is Pakistan !!
Why don't they get off their butts and start kicking some!
JUST LIKE THE OKLAHOMA BOMBER THERE ARE NUTS IN EVERY CULTURE BE IT ISLAM OR CHRISTIAN.  TO LUMP ALL MUSL. INTO A HATE GROUP IS A BAD AS SAYING AS HE DID ALL AMERICANS ARE OUR ENEMY.
This entire news article is an example of government controlled propaganda.

The government pulls the strings of the corporate media and they publish the governments propaganda.

And of course there is a message that connects to Pakistan.
Right after Obama supports military action in Pakistan.

My guess is their Plan to invade Iran was sidetracked by the Russian interests in Iran.

So now its time to work on the citizens with new ideas about Pakistan.

And BAMM, We get a new propaganda article.

Watch and see, the CIA will probably release a new bin laden fake video with a message about Pakistan needing to be dealt with.

I hear the war drums now on Pakistan and definitely see the war propaganda by this articles presence.

DONT BE FOOLED, cuz they want to fool and fool you again.
Sherry U. Bedford Texas

The gov said al qaeda attacked us cuz they wanted to destroy our freedom.

So who is actually destroying our freedom now?

Who are the real terrorists?

Were there really any terrorists to begin with?

WTC 7 collapsed in 6.3 seconds.
The building could not of collapsed more perfect for a demolition company if they were asked to bring that building down and not damage surrounding structures or the slurry wall.

THINK, USE YOUR MIND and really think about it all
