McCain's 'Gift Gap'

We've had the Bubba Gap. The Women Gap. And now comes the "Gift Gap." At political gift stores across America, Barack Obama schlock is outselling John McCain schlock at least five to one, according to interviews NBC News conducted with gift-shop retailers and t-shirt manufacturers.

That would mean that five times as many Obama t-shirts are on the streets…five times as many Obama bumper stickers are junking up cars…and five times as many Obama bobble heads are wiggling on desks across America.

At the Capital Noveltees manufacturing plant in Washington, DC, for example, demand for Obama gift items is through the roof. The firm, a major supplier to retailers nationwide, has sold 54,028 pro-Obama t-shirts since March. During that same period, the company has sold only 5,979 pro-McCain t-shirts, said company owner Susan Benovitz.

"It's not that we're favoring one candidate over another," Benovitz said. "I just know how fast the re-orders come in for Obama."

Omen, or junk political science?

Think the sale of political tchotchkes is a meaningless omen, a false canary in the coalmine for the McCain campaign? Well, consider this:

Bobby Salehi is an assistant district-sales manager for America, the 16-store political-merchandise chain. He's sold gifts in U.S. airports for 20 years, and says every four years he can predict the winner of the presidential election. "Whoever sells the most t-shirts usually ends up winning," he says.

Salehi says that McCain is getting trounced in t-shirt, hat and mug sales at all the America shops, in Virginia, Maryland, DC, and New Jersey. The same numbers hold true for McCain at the Political Americana shop by the White House.

And it's not just at retail outlets.

The eBay Election:
On eBay, type in "Obama" and 4,368 gift items pop up.
Type in "McCain" and only 1,097 items emerge.

Why the big discrepancy in sales? "Maybe people who support Obama are more demonstrative" than McCain fans, speculates Benovitz, from Capital Noveltees.

Maybe. That’s certainly what the Obama campaign would have one believe. At a press conference last month, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe showed reporters several power-point slides titled, “The Enthusiasm Gap.” They quoted results from a USA Today/Gallup poll that showed that 61% of Democrats said they were more enthusiastic than usual about voting in this year's election, while just 35% of Republicans reported that same tingly feeling. Quoting from a similar LA Times, Plouffe showed a slide that said: “Even among voters who say they do plan to vote for McCain, more than half say they are "not enthusiastic" about their chosen candidate; only 45% say they are enthusiastic. By contrast, 81% of Obama voters say they are enthusiastic, and almost half call themselves "very enthusiastic," a level of zeal that only 13% of McCain's supporters display.”

So does that alleged enthusiasm for Obama explain the McCain gift gap? Not so fast, says Ira Teinowitz, the Washington Bureau Chief for Advertising Age. Teinowitz says he’d first want to know who these customers are, whether foreigners are skewing the results and how well Obama is selling in Republican-leaning red states.

And he suggests that, since Obama is so popular with Gen Facebook, that young voters may artificially be driving up t-shirts sales. “It’s logical to assume that young people are more likely to wear t-shirts than old [folks],” Teinowitz said. “If you look at the cool versus non-cool aspect of this, McCain isn’t exactly cool” to wear on a faded t-shirt, he added.

McCain Campaign Reacts:
The McCain campaign reacted to the doomsday news of the Gift Gap with characteristic humor. Is this gift-buying discrepancy an omen of a campaign in trouble, we queried in an email?

"Al Gore and John Kerry sold a lot of t-shirts too," McCain spokesman Joe Pounder replied.

Quick. Funny. To the point. Maybe it will end up on a bumper sticker.

when i hear people say stuff like "never ever" voting for obama without giving any reason, i cant help but think they're prejudiced...i may be wrong, but thats just how it comes across
Obama is the best choice we've got, better brains, policies and personality.
He certainly got my vote,no more dumb president!

Maybe the McCain generation doesn't look good in  t-shirts? :-)
The Cheney Bush stickers have long been torn from the bumpers of their betrayed followers.
Obama stickers are everywhere no Mccain stickers around here-
Im talking about Arizona, McCains home state, even though he is considered a carpetbagger by many around here! And as far as the 2ooo election that basically was stolen from Al Gore and the dems it’s a slamb dunk as to who the best man was and always will be – Gore over Bush easy! The nation paid the price of the duplicity Jeb Bush and the Florida republicans rammed down the throats of our nation during this election!
As far as some of the comments on this thread that read they would never vote for Obama- these are some of the left over Zionists that voted for Bush! They would sink with the ship before they admit change is needed or admit that their boy Bush will go down as the worst and most corrupt president in history! I dont really know if Obama can bring back the nation, so much damage has been done? But I really do know that a republican administration got us there and in no way do they possess the ideology that will get us out!!!
I personally cannot buy enough Obama merchandise.  When people admire a pin, poster etc. I can give them out and build support for the campaign.  I do not understand why anyone would state that they would not vote for the best candidate for president when they have the opportunity to do so.  We're Americans first people.  Forgot your party and think about your Nation!  This election is too important to do anything else.  Obama '08
Jo Jo from Denver: what are the reasons you would never ever EVER [added caps] vote for Mr. Obama?  Are you that much of a hard-core supporter of the War ON Iraq, that Mr. McCain promises to continue waging in the style of "W"?  Has it made America safer?  What about Iraq?  If you can find anything positive about this elective war of choice (one man's choice), was it worth the staggering cost to current and future generations - not to mention all of the smashed homes in Iraq and destroyed lives in both nations?  And do you really think Pres. Obama will be worse than this?
Making a significant improvement in the quality of the Executive Branch won't be that difficult. The current Chief Executive hasn't set the bar very high. Even John McCain could possibly improve things.

But what about the other side of the purchasing trend? Any data on sales of anti-Obama v. anti-McCain merchandise?
Toni,
Did you say knowledge? You're supporting a guy who suffers numerous memory lapses and finished 894 out of 899 students in his class. It's obvious who has the smarts to be president.A hint: not MCBUSH.
So women who vote for McSame dont like equal pay or womens rights. Let them vote for the 1 who doesnt support them. Susan B Anthony and all the other women rights pioneers would be so proud of them trampling on all their successes.
How can obama-ites say he is better when all he says is change.....change what, change how, change when ? Just alot of open jaw flapping with NO substance. Is it that he won't commit to anything to keep his flipping and flopping down ? It's not that I'm a huge McCain fan but at least he has the guts to make a stand !!!
I dont see many "I Voted for Bush" tee-shirts among Republicans - or Dick Cheney or Im a Neo-Con and Loving It tee-shirts. And McCain would represent 4 more years of GB.
The lack of McC tee shirts suggests that even Repbulicans arent enthusiastic about him; even they may fear a replayed of GB's predency.
. . . and indeed those who say they want McC do so generally not because they think he would be a good president because they dont like the idea of Obama.
Jo Jo and Karen must be voting for Bob Barr, Ralph Nader, or Cynthia McKinney, then.
I have to agree with karen from high point. I would never ever ever vote for obama either.
The slient majority will speak on election day, dressed in everyday shirts and such.
I love the way McCain supporters can't give one "Good" reason for voting for McCain.  Duh - there is no "Good" reason.
"That would mean that five times as many Obama t-shirts are on the streets…five times as many Obama bumper stickers are junking up cars…"

odds are there are five times as many walkers, canes and oxygen tanks with McCain bumper stickers junking them up
I mean't to say, like, I hate to see Obama being made discrete.
I'm just one of the millions of outsiders who follow your politics as they have a direct affect on many other nation's economies.

It doesn't matter who you talk to outside the U.S. almost everyone and maybe even everyone is hoping Obama gets elected.  This could elevate America's status in the world back to where it used be before the Bush era.

Everyone you talk to can't understant how McCain is within 40 points of Obama when you compare the two candidates and their policies.  Has common sense gone for a holiday in America?
Here in Ohio, the Obama stickers outnumber the McCain stickers by a healthy margin.  If you like the way things are---bank failures, foreclosures, businesses closing, the Iraq war going on forever, tax breaks for the rich, go ahead and vote for McCain. McCain has no solutions--just more of the same old Bush magic. I'll proudly vote for Obama and I know many, many others who will do the same.
Well let me get to the point with karen.. When you stated that you would never vote for Obama. Well just come out and say what you really feel and that is that you wouldn't never vote for a black man to be Pres. You can tell the truth. But anyway, I'm so tried of fools post things online and they really don't have a clue about what's going on. There always two side to a story and when it comes to them Log Cabin Repugs they only preach one side and that is there side and if anyone disagree with them got to be Leftie.....
Well, I love them type of fools because I that that it was just in my head like, Gramm said....

Well all you want-be's righties and fools of fools, there is a new day coming and it's time to keep you clowns out of the White House and let them Dems get this country back on track. like everytime before. Them Log Cabin Repugs can tell us one thing that Bush and McSane done for the American people in the past 7 yrs. But I can tell you'll  this and that is that what I see today isn't what I seem 7yrs ago and what we was promise when we went into Iraq and that is this so call Cheap Gas....... That just like McSane's Gas Tax Holiday..... It's time to end the pain and stuffer of the Americans at the gas pumps and food prices. We are paying so much that at this point it's a joke and the only ones laughing right now are those Log Cabin Repugs, Like Gramm said, " We are a bunch of Whinner and these prices are just in our head. And McSane saying about his Gas Tax Holiday is just something to make us feel good even those we don't see it. But let McSane telling, If we don't see it all we need to do is close our eyes and we can feel it....
LMAO

That a really joker, He should've played in that New Batman Movie..... Starring himself Jonh "C-nile" McSane as the joker!!!!!
Here it is in a nut shell. Obama is the first Black Presidential candidate with a chance at winning and people know what that means. Win or lose an obama shirt in 20 years will fetch some cash while a Mccain tee even if he wins will be worth nothing. Its all about the prospect of money.
Well, Paul Mahoney in Seattle, WA, now, that's a real long-winded and wonderful psychoanalytic superduper. Say, wouldn't it be easier to admit that may be the man is what he appears to be rather than run your head through that long-winded grinder just to convince yourself that he's not? Just saying.
I like to wear my Muslim Obama Tee shirt where ever Dems , Muslims, or  Blacks can see it. It shows him (as usual) disrespecting our USA flag.
OH
MY
GOD

Damon44 - I would give you a break from the usual crap spouting Obama is a Muslim if you didn't have access to the internet - but you posted on here, so obviously you DO yet you still insist on posting lies - OBAMA IS NOT, NOR HAS HE EVER BEEN A MUSLIM.  HE did NOT disrespect the flag.  HE put his hand on his heart during the pledge, not during the National Anthem, which is THE PROPER WAY OF SHOWING RESPECT.  Again, obviously you don't know the proper way to show respect during the National Anthem.  You either SALUTE (as if in the military, which I'm sure you've never served or you would know this) OR you stand at attention with your hands at your side.  I'M SO SICK OF YOU PEOPLE that spout ignorance!  There's nothing wrong with disagreeing - that's what makes this country great - but don't lie.  It doesn't become the Grand Ol' Party - oh wait...what did I just say?  That's what they do.
Where is the independent candidate? This election is ripe for a 2 party outsider who doesn't have to tote the party line but be a real representative of the middle majority I think this individual would leave both candidates with a gift gap.
To Damon44:

What a very rude "person" you are!  You must lead a very pitiful life if you must wear a shirt that you think insults people (dems, muslims, blacks) you don't even know>  I am curious.  You can obviously see who the black people are, but how can you distinquish the dems and the muslims?  Sad, sad, sad.
Yeah, all you people look back at what has happened since bush came into office to clean the clinton white house, We did get attacked by the man that Clinton let go free, But nobody has touched the USA since. The price of oil hs gone up almost double since the Demos took over the Congress and passed the laws and restrictions on getting our own oil out of the ground. Guess that's Nancy's crowning achievement. The same time that Bush says he will drop his ececetive hold on continential drilling in the USA even with Charlie Crist of Florida Agreeing to offshore drilling. Suddenly the world started seeing the USA getting serious about suppling our own oil. As a Layman in the scheme of things Happening around me  over 57 years I can see that It's been the Demos holding the USA back from being sucessful in Making the prestige of the USA be as great as the Position we have had to take in helping every small nation world wide.
truth even his supporters don't know where mccain stands...if he doesn't show up with Bush, he raises little money, and McCain's supporters are not proud, they actually wich he were Mitt Romney...by now you alls hould be tired of the RNCpicking the candidate instead of the Republican voters....this is the third time in a row their primary has ended early with the others bowing out....
truth even his supporters don't know where mccain stands...if he doesn't show up with Bush, he raises little money, and McCain's supporters are not proud, they actually wish he were Mitt Romney...by now you all should be tired of the RNC picking the candidate during the primary instead of the Republican voters....this is the third time in a row their primary has ended early with the others bowing out....McCain became the nominee with no contest
cen antioch in TN wonders how Damon44 can tell who is a Dem or Muslim if they are not black?

That's easy. If any person who is not black takes offense at what Damon44 posted, then to Damon44 they must be a Dem or Muslim. It's how people like Damon44 think. And as long as those he assosciates with support such behavior, or even just do not speak out against it, he will continue in such uncivil thoughts and discourse.

A more practical response than just speaking out against such filth is for all like minded decent folks to seize the day (Voting day, that is), and vote against such thinking and/or complicity. Purge all the Republicans who have abused their power over the last 12 years. Maybe then a new generation of conservatives can take back their party, and eventually Republicans can once again have something to be proud of, something worthy of Lincoln's legacy.

Ironic, isn't it, that the Republican's opponents, Barack Obama and local Democratic representative candidates, are the ones with the message of Change and Hope that should be most appealing to those who would like to fix the sick Republican party. As always it starts with each individual and their own choices.
I would never, never, ever, ever vote for Bush no.2.
His V.P. would be Prez before 1st. term is out!!!!
