McCain's 'Gift Gap'

We've had the Bubba Gap. The Women Gap. And now comes the "Gift Gap." At political gift stores across America, Barack Obama schlock is outselling John McCain schlock at least five to one, according to interviews NBC News conducted with gift-shop retailers and t-shirt manufacturers.

That would mean that five times as many Obama t-shirts are on the streets…five times as many Obama bumper stickers are junking up cars…and five times as many Obama bobble heads are wiggling on desks across America.

At the Capital Noveltees manufacturing plant in Washington, DC, for example, demand for Obama gift items is through the roof. The firm, a major supplier to retailers nationwide, has sold 54,028 pro-Obama t-shirts since March. During that same period, the company has sold only 5,979 pro-McCain t-shirts, said company owner Susan Benovitz.

"It's not that we're favoring one candidate over another," Benovitz said. "I just know how fast the re-orders come in for Obama."

Omen, or junk political science?

Think the sale of political tchotchkes is a meaningless omen, a false canary in the coalmine for the McCain campaign? Well, consider this:

Bobby Salehi is an assistant district-sales manager for America, the 16-store political-merchandise chain. He's sold gifts in U.S. airports for 20 years, and says every four years he can predict the winner of the presidential election. "Whoever sells the most t-shirts usually ends up winning," he says.

Salehi says that McCain is getting trounced in t-shirt, hat and mug sales at all the America shops, in Virginia, Maryland, DC, and New Jersey. The same numbers hold true for McCain at the Political Americana shop by the White House.

And it's not just at retail outlets.

The eBay Election:
On eBay, type in "Obama" and 4,368 gift items pop up.
Type in "McCain" and only 1,097 items emerge.

Why the big discrepancy in sales? "Maybe people who support Obama are more demonstrative" than McCain fans, speculates Benovitz, from Capital Noveltees.

Maybe. That’s certainly what the Obama campaign would have one believe. At a press conference last month, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe showed reporters several power-point slides titled, “The Enthusiasm Gap.” They quoted results from a USA Today/Gallup poll that showed that 61% of Democrats said they were more enthusiastic than usual about voting in this year's election, while just 35% of Republicans reported that same tingly feeling. Quoting from a similar LA Times, Plouffe showed a slide that said: “Even among voters who say they do plan to vote for McCain, more than half say they are "not enthusiastic" about their chosen candidate; only 45% say they are enthusiastic. By contrast, 81% of Obama voters say they are enthusiastic, and almost half call themselves "very enthusiastic," a level of zeal that only 13% of McCain's supporters display.”

So does that alleged enthusiasm for Obama explain the McCain gift gap? Not so fast, says Ira Teinowitz, the Washington Bureau Chief for Advertising Age. Teinowitz says he’d first want to know who these customers are, whether foreigners are skewing the results and how well Obama is selling in Republican-leaning red states.

And he suggests that, since Obama is so popular with Gen Facebook, that young voters may artificially be driving up t-shirts sales. “It’s logical to assume that young people are more likely to wear t-shirts than old [folks],” Teinowitz said. “If you look at the cool versus non-cool aspect of this, McCain isn’t exactly cool” to wear on a faded t-shirt, he added.

McCain Campaign Reacts:
The McCain campaign reacted to the doomsday news of the Gift Gap with characteristic humor. Is this gift-buying discrepancy an omen of a campaign in trouble, we queried in an email?

"Al Gore and John Kerry sold a lot of t-shirts too," McCain spokesman Joe Pounder replied.

Quick. Funny. To the point. Maybe it will end up on a bumper sticker.

The only gap is in the brain of Obama  when it comes to knowledge.
Did anyone figure out that people who support McCain do NOT have to wear their feelings so openly?
That’s true. But Al gore had the election stolen from him by blocking minorities from voting in Florida with the help of his brother. Otherwise Gore would have won.
I still have both the Clinton/Gore and the Gore for president tee shirts. I am adding Obama's to my collection. I like to wear them in places lots of Republicans hang out, year after year after year.

As far a Kerry goes, I liked him but we all knew the democrats really did not want to win. Everyone wanted Bush to suffer another 4 years of his own stupidity and really sink the Republican row boat into oblivion. McCain is the same type of symbol as Kerry was. Hopefully he will loose so the Republicans can sit out a term or two and hope the world can forget the 8 year Bush disaster that just happened. Let’s face it, that would have to be the only reason John McCain would sink so low, sell out and try to be a Bush clone. He doesn’t want to sit in office trying to figure a way of paying off all the debt, create jobs, envision new ideas for stimulating the economy and make Americans happy. Republican presidents have always had a problem with science and creativity. They are more like start a war, create debt, give money to the elitist rich, make more poor people, make more homeless people, pollute the planet, pollute America and then collect the big golden presidential retirement package.

Basically, Democratic presidents have been far superior human beings compared to the elitist trash the Republicans have dredged up over the last 40 years. So Democrats tend to enjoy wearing the tee shirts to remind people of their bad decisions (like electing a moron from Texas and rejecting Al Gore).
i would never, ever vote for Obama, but don't like to see anyone discreted.
So Karen why would you "never ever vote for Obama". Are there really that many issues that John McCain tops Obama?  I cant imagine that anyone in this country would want 4 more years of all the programs that got us here!
why does the media keep telling us how much better Obama is in everything but when you look at th polls he is basically tied with Mccain;
The gift gap tells the real tale about the contest between Obama and McCain...no contest!  Obama will easily win the election in November.  Only the news media and their kindly reporting of McCain's aged and mentally challenged condition make it even appear to be a real contest.
Karen from High Point:  Discreted?  What are you trying to say with this sentence?  I am also curious why you would never, ever vote for Obama?
Well, I still see Bush-Cheney bumper stickers a lot. If people were that proud to show them off, why not show off McCain? Something must be wrong to make these supporters not be proud of their candidate, no?
the reasonobama is such a transformational candidate is because america stands at a precipice. people realize that we need change on a drastic level. even some who still hold reservations about him will vote for him despite themselves, much as people voted for abraham lincoln in his dayeven though many had not an abolitionist bone in their bodies, but had their eyes on the bigger prize of preserving the union. we are now in such times.
Unfortunately, I don't think Obama is the big change candidate many of us had hoped he'd be. What I've seen is a very strong public speaker who knows what to say and when to say it slowly pull ahead in the polls, but not through firm declarations of his principles - instead, he's taken the lead by using the same tactics that every other politician has used. There is something different about Obama, however. He's done a very good job at dressing his usual political tactics as unusual political tactics, and has so far managed to convince every one that he's something hot and special...
I have to agree with karen from high point. I would never ever ever vote for obama either.
To WMC in Norman, Ok
Sounds like you live on another planet.
WWWI Woodrow Wilson- Democrate.
WWII FDR and H.S Truman Korean War
Vietnam war JFK and LBJ all Deocrates.
So your statement of Republicans starting wars and creating Debt are for the most part invalid.
History has also dictated more often the Democrates have always raised taxes again invalid statement about Republicans.
Voting for a Democrate is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.
Who wants higher taxes and socialize medicine?
Who would lie in bed with a terroists or even thing you could rationalize with one?
Don't American realize they want to Kill us all.
Hello.
I THINK JO JO AND KAREN ARE AGAINST A BLACK PRESIDENT. THAT IS THE REAL REASON THEY WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR HIM.

THEY WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE AN OLD WHITE MAN WHO IS THE SAME AS THE PRESIDENT WE HAVE NOW. WE DONT NEED SOMEONE WHO IS AGAINST A BLACK MAN.
I like Countdown with Keith Olbermann, but the website SUCKS big time. That should be fixed before folks start talking about it. Did I mention the 'Countdown With Keith Olbermann' site SUCKS? It sure does! Shame on those responsible.
My very plain vanilla XP OS PC displays garbage at the bottom of the homepage of 'Countdown With Keith Olbermann' words are overlapping and at the top there's SIGN OUT, as if I signed in. It's a mess and needs to be fixed before people start making fun of it and MSNBC...further.
Gift gap? Really!  I'd like to see the media compare the BRAIN GAP: Obama a Harvard Law honor student compared to a low-C-GPA Anapolis John McCain. (Graduated at the BOTTOM OF HIS CLASS!)

Do we REALLY need another "C" average student running this country? (see: Bush)

And for his service: McCain served honorably and he SAYS he doesn't like to talk about his time as a POW. YET, his campaign splashes his episode in political adverts as if he where the poster child for MS!  Should I feel sorry to the point of voting for this guy?

Remember: "It's the economy, STUPID!!" and McCain thinks we are in great shape!

"why does the media keep telling us how much better Obama is in everything but when you look at th polls he is basically tied with Mccain?"

Most pollsters call land lines only--many voters such as myself only use their cell phones so that leaves a huge gap of many times younger voters unpolled.  I'm not saying that's the only answer but should be kept in mind
Leopard will never change their spots. I know it will be difficult for some americans to see obama in the White House : However most Decent Americans are going to feel proud of making sure that Obama gets there. So you guys can start purging yourself from now. What to be has to be and no one can stop it , it's call destiny.
Speakin of Obama....   there is a new amateur video posted on You Tube that is pretty pretty funny and good. Check it out, pass it along.

"Go Tell Mama - I'm For Obama!"
"If Barack Obama makes it all the way to the white House, it will represent a quantum leap in America's consciousness and a promise to restore America's position in the world."

Deepak Chopra
All of you "never-evers" don't worry, we don't need your votes.  Obama is a slam-dunk.  He will win and thank goodness because this country is swirling down the toilet faster than we can fix the plumbing!

GO OBAMA!!  WOOOOHOOOO!!!
obama things are selling more because everyone knows that McCain is an idiot and who would be stupid and ignorant enough to wear a McCain Tee Shirt, even the Old people who vote more than everyone else don't even want McCain crap. They can spin it anyway they want to, Obama 08.
Duh, who would be fool enough to advertise being a mccain supporter??!!
I would never ever vote for McCain, I'm done supporting a political party that has done its best to destroy conservatism.

This (once) Republican is seriously considering voting for Barr (an actual conservative) or Obama (to punish the GOP).
I would never ever vote for McCain
I think there is some credibility to the enthusiasm gap argument however I believe the biggest factor is that Americans love being a part of history.  He is selling merchandise so rapidly because everyone wants to own a piece of the historical moment.
A recent poll that was done in McCain's home state of Arizona shows him losing to Obama.  The people that know him the best do not even like him!  Obama is going to win a landslide!
I dont think that most independents or republicans actually buy t-hirts or anythig else for that mater.  What is more important to most  people, I believe,  is that their candidate is respected and says what he or she means and stands by it wheather republican or democrat.  We the people of this country have gone way off track seeking advise and counsil from the leaders, when in fact the country belongs to us.  I'm sure both candidates are good people with the their best intintions in mind, but you have to choose in your mind which one fits the  needs for our country.  I won't try to tell anyone how to vote, but I strongly urge people to research all the candidates to see what is best for them.

Lastly, this is the greatest country in the world to allow this kind of dialog and a true election of the American people.

God Bless all voters and all Americans.
Even though I am going to vote for Obama, you have the right to not vote for him. I didn't vote for Bush -- TWICE -- and believe me, my conscience feels a lot cleaner for that decision. It feel fine about voting for Clinton twice -- if nothing else, he did help lower unemployment and reduce the national deficit. I'd have a hard time opening my mouth if I voted for George W. Bush. I guess my point is, before I start trashing a guy who has never been president, I'd first point fingers at the administration that already proved to be incompetent.
I would never ever vote for McSame.
That is why I have an Obama T-shirt.
I got the T-shirt to wear because with
4.25$ gas, I can't afford to drive my Obama
bumper sticker around town much.
Admit it, at this point there are few people out there who are willing to admit that they even are republicans, let alone admit they are going to vote for one.

On a recent trip to Seattle, I noted that of all the political signs next to the freeway, only one advertised it's candidate as being a republican in very, very small letters.

I have Obama stuff. I'm proud of him. He's smart, he's articulate and he'll make a great President of the United States. We have allot of work to do to repair the damage done to this great country by republican rule. Time to get to work.
The reason there are still Bush/Cheney bumper stickers on cars, uh I mean trucks is that the bozo driving the vehicle doesn't know that you can remove them 4 years after that candidate and election is over.

I do admit that I still have political buttons on my visor in my car. 'Don't blame me, I voted for Kerry', photo of Bush - 'Daddy's little war criminal', 'Discent is the highest form of Patriotism; - Thomas Jefferson. No W.
To Toni: I guess that is why McCain graduated fifth from the bottom of the class of over nine hundred. And the reason why Obama was a honor student, president of the Harvard Law Journal and taught Constituional law. McCain is well behind Obama in the smarts department. He is nothing, but a party unacheiving rich kid that wouldn't be where he is at except for him money connections. We've already experience someone that has embarrassed this country with his lack of mental prowess we don't need another bumbling fool. He can't remember things from one year to the next.
The deafening silence from Karen from High Point is telling, isnt it?

Gail,
That's the difference between McCain and Obama. Obama inspires people to show their support openly. For those of us who've never been into politics, it's all good. For those of you who choose to support McCain, well, I wish you could be inspired to wear a t-shirt too.
let the obama bomb explode to break the ground and shatter all form of proscrastinating old men with no vision and mission but full of selfdeciet, hypocrasy and mega-megalomania into oblivion and dustbin of hitlerlike history.longlive, victory for obama.who will wear mcCain's t-shirt?
Let face it, the reason why Karen, and jo jo will never ever vote for Obama, has nothing to do with the issues, it's that Obama will never ever ever be White.

Also the unspoken truth is McCain, is constantly showing his age, he puts on a good show of energy and adequate state of mind for those of you who's looking through eyes blinded with racism or fear; but those of us accustomed to applying some degree of knowledge in our decision making process are able to see the affect age has take on McCain's mental faculty. He really is having a difficult time keeping it all together. You can choose from any of the many examples, esp. last week. As time progress he will of course continue to decay. Therefore who amongst you wish to have a president in the early stages of dementia? Remember be careful about what you wish for, you just might get it—the same way you got Bush, and now living with constant regret. And he, Cheney and the oil companies are laughing all the way to the bank. All I can reason is some people find thrills in self destruction. Perhaps that’s another reason why Karen and jo jo will never ever –ever vote for Obama, they are thrill seekers.
Given the genius we have in the White House, we now have McCain, who, despite his obvious priveledge, ranked 894th out of 899 students in his class at the US Naval Academy.

It's time for Americans to stop blaming Politicians and take a good look at themselves.
Re: Karen's and other's position on "never, ever" voting for Obama. It's too bad that some people are inflexible in their thinking, but we can all see where that sort of approach leads - just look at the current occupant of the White House.

I myself am an Obama supporter, but I am not so inflexible that I would "never, ever" vote for McCain. In fact, I could vote for McCain, provided that he demonstate a few things to me:
1. That he can put together more than a couple of days of campaigning without getting confused about something or other, particularly when it involves basic understanding of our overseas enemies (and partners, for that matter), or fluency in basic domestic ecomomic matters.
2. That he starts really respecting women (stop with the offensive jokes, derogatory language, and voting against woman's issues, like equal pay and denying coverage for birth control equivalent at least to that mandated for Viagra).
3. That he figure out that tax cuts are not the answer to everything, especially when over 90% of the cuts he prefers go to those who both least need them, yet benefit the most from a functioning government and stable society.
4. That he stop calling Americans "My Friends" on the stump. Even if by some chance I voted for him, I get annoyed when people I know nothing about on a personal level (and whose positions on a public level mostly do not fit with my own preferences) come on claiming to be my friend. Fellow citizen I can accept and respect, but I doubt he will ever be my friend.
5. That he stop accusing his opponent of anything and everything that he himself is guilty of.
6. That he demonstrate an ability to learn. Finishing 5th from the bottom at the academy is not a good sign, but perhaps he was just being a youthful hell-raiser. Crashing not one, two or even three but a total of 5 planes during the course of his military career gives me reason to want to see some real evidence of him having learned something about the benefits of a discipline for learning. For example, how about showing us he has learned to use modern tools, such as (gasp!) a computer? The internet?
7. That he stop abusing his own signature bragging point, campaign finance reform, by utilizing (or allowing his party to utilize) every possible loophole they can think of during the current campaign.

So you see, I am not inflexible. Just those few things would be enough for me to take another look at the potential of John McCain. In the meantime, though, Obama seems to me to be much more likely to be the better president (and, for that matter, the better man).

Is anyone counting the NObama merchandise?
...and to think, there are still many, who support placing an individual with early stages of "demenita," in office as president.  This truly behooves me.  The Republicans don't speak about it...McCain has a serious health issue, which prevents him from remembering "short-term"
PERIOD!!!!  If voters would hone in and document what they call his "missteps/gaffes, etc.," they will see there is a problem.  This could be awfully scary for someone in office running these United States of America!
These are the reasons **I** will never vote for Obama:
http://gto7.wordpress.com/2008/05/29/38-obama-falsehoods-the-media-ignores/

While people are busy making comments about "Karen's" error, I encourage all bloggers to use spellcheck or a dictionary. It isn't LOOSE it is LOSE (and many other similar errors)!
I like Obama a lot and really hope he win.I just thank we should give him a chance. We did not know for sure what any of the candidates were going to do until they were in office. We all need to pray and ask God to give us the best leader. jw Houston ,TX(JULY 19,2008 9:32 am)
Really people.......who cares who you are personally voting for??? Discuss on topic and keep your voting preferences to yourselves.  For every 1 or 2 votes for, there's another 1 or 2 votes against.  So, just think about the country and not yourselves when you vote.  Be bigger than you.
In late June and early July I drove from Fort Lauderdale, FL, to Albany, NY, and back again, and NEVER saw one single McCain bumper sticker! I was on interstates, tiny back roads, big cities, small towns.
I saw about as many Bush '04 stickers as I saw Obama stickers (after all, a lot of that driving was through states like South Carolina), but not one single McCain sticker (or yard sign, either).
Paul,

I think Obama is That Change candidate we have been looking for. Unfortunately you can't change a thing unless you get elected. Even Picasso and Salvador Dali had to paint on the same old canvasses as before. But the results were far different than their contemporaries.

Obama has shown that he can adapt and flex thru the changing political landscape. We've had the Principled President-1 ( Jimmy Carter ) who projected honesty, integrity and benevolence . Then we have Principled President-2 ( W Bush) who is obstinate, rigid, uncompromising, a macho-toughness.

Neither served the country very well..

Tales from the crypt is 90's, no one buys that merchandise anymore.
That's OK Karen from High Point and Jo jo from Colorado..... we would never ever ever vote for McBush so we are all even now.
