Where is Osama Bin Laden? An analysis

It isn’t a comforting assessment.

A "Western military analyst" was asked earlier this month about reports that Osama Bin Laden was seen on the slopes of K2, the world’s second highest mountain on the Pakistan-China border, or in the Khost Province of Afghanistan.

His response was stunning in both its honesty and its frustration.

"We don't have a clue where he is or even may be,” the Western analyst said. “We have had NO credible intelligence on OBL since 2001. All the rest is rumor and rubbish either whipped up by the media or churned out in the power corridors of western capitals."

In fact, say U.S. officials, the last time U.S. operatives saw Osama Bin Laden--other than in his own videos--was in the famous Predator video shot in August 2000 where he is seen walking with a security contingent near his compound at Tarnak Farms in eastern Afghanistan.  The Predators had not been armed yet.

The last time the U.S. heard Osama Bin Laden was at the battle for Tora Bora, when an NSA operative overheard him giving orders on a frequency not normally monitored and not recorded.  There were some initial concerns about the identification but the agency later learned from other sources and materials that indeed that had been him.

But that unfortunately is it.

There have been suggestions Bin Laden was wounded, and some speculation he has died. One piece of evidence that suggested he had been hurt was the long interval between videotaped messages from him, but those were a long time ago. A tape released around Christmas 2001--and thus after the Tora Bora battle--was later determined (through time references in the tape) to have been made about November 17, 2001.  After that, there were no contemporaneous videos until the October 29, 2004, tape, the infamous one released just before the U.S. presidential election.  (Don’t be surprised if he does that again; al-Qaida is very cognizant of election dates.)

Still, the US is confident about some aspects of Bin Laden’s life on the run, drawn from interrogations of other high value targets as well as notebooks and computer hard drives captured with al Qaeda officials or found after they were killed.

Where does he live?
Not in caves.  The general belief, gleaned from interrogations of his compatriots, is that Bin Laden lives in one of the many mud-walled compounds that can be found along the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan.  If you fly in a chopper, you will see them--large multi-walled buildings that are continually expanded.  The largest ones are those of the clan leaders.

How often does he move?
Bin Laden is NOT believed to move that often, either. He does not normally change locations every night or even very frequently. He is believed to stay long periods of time--months in some instances--in one place.  In some cases, al-Qaida security personnel have married into local tribes and clans, making them part of the extended family and giving Bin Laden and others additional protection. When he does move, it is not with a large convoy of trucks. (He used to be driven around in a white Mitsubishi Pajero, accompanied by white Toyota Tundras, but those days are long gone.)  The latest information--and it is not current--is that he moves on motorbikes.  One reason is that cars and trucks can be spotted by the roving “J-Stars” aircraft.  Motorbikes cannot be as easily seen. According to Pakistani officials, Bin Laden and other al-Qaida officials move mostly late at night. In the hours after the sunset prayers, they will move into a village and take over a guesthouse in a large compound.

How is his health?
As for his health, he is 50 years old, turning 51 (according to the best estimates) in July.  He does NOT have kidney failure and does NOT need dialysis.  He has had kidney stones.  He is also seen as somewhat of a hypochondriac. He is missing a toe, lost in a battle against the Soviets. He reportedly has an enlarged heart and chronically low blood pressure, which he treats with drugs.  There is even some dispute over his height.  Is he tall?  Yes.  Is he 6’5”?  Maybe not.  As one intelligence official told me, “If you see a guy who is 6’4” tall and looks like him, kill him.”

Who are his bodyguards?
His security personnel are directed by his brother-in-law and believed to include Chechen and Uzbeks as well as Arabs. And yes, there are reports that if he is about to be captured, his bodyguards have orders to “martyr” him.  However, the default position of U.S. forces has always been to kill him, not capture him. Don’t expect heroic efforts to save him, as in the case of Abu Musab al Zarqawi. The same holds true for Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden’s deputy.  The U.S. has Bin Laden’s DNA, which the Saudis provided. It’s always helpful when you have 52 siblings.

How important is he now?
The U.S. believes that OBL is more of a titular, inspirational leader, with Zawahiri as CEO and the leading philosopher. There has been some tension, the U.S. believes, between their Saudi and Egyptian underlings. The Egyptians are in charge, but virtually every counter-terrorism official we talk to notes that North Africans, particularly Libyans, are rising within what they call al-Qaida Central.

Do Bin Laden and Zawahiri travel together?
OBL and Zawahiri have not traveled together since mid 2003, for security reasons. Although the U.S. does not have a clue where OBL is, they have been able to track and target Zawahiri multiple times, by his own accounts.  The most recent targeting was January 13, 2006, in Damodola in Pakistan.  The U.S. fired volleys of Hellfire missiles at two guesthouses, but Zawahiri had already left. U.S. and Pakistani officials have told us that they believe he was tipped off. Zawahiri himself has admitted he was there.

Who is the next most important leader?
The U.S. has deliberately put a high priority on taking out al-Qaida’s Number Threes, killing or capturing five of them since September 11.  They are the directors of international operations, the men who would organize attacks against the United States and United Kingdom. The big prize in each takedown are the computer hard drives, phonebooks and notebooks. To maintain operational security, al-Qaida requires that new courier and computer networks be formed. This obviously slows down planning.  Moreover, the U.S. believes such takedowns are one of the few things that can push OBL’s security team to pick up and move.  The hope is that U.S. spy planes see some of that movement.

Al Qaida’s current No. 3 is Sayed Sheikh, an Egyptian confidante of Zawahari.

Another "mission accomplished" by our fabulous leaders
So, who is going to tell the socialist media anything of value.  Lets ask Dan Rather to tell the truth and authenticate a story!  LOL  I think the intelligence community is jerking the socialist medias chain, and rightfully so.  The media will still spin the truth to serve their socialist agenda.
I'm empathetic to all agencies tracking OBL.  While Al Qaeda has been planning their movements for decades, Western security has largely played catch up.
Whether or not he's dead, injured or reduced to the role of a figure head is irrelevant at this point.  His death would strengthen extremist resolve.
To successfully eliminate the threat of future attacks (which most security agencies believe is inevitable) allied forces would need to cut the head off the beast in quick succession.  No easy feat.
Now that our brillant Supreme Court has ruled on the prisoners at Guatamino, with no regard what-so-ever of American Lives, al-Qaida will have a much easier job co-ordinating their attacks on US soil.
Bhutto, before her death appeared on the news stating that Bin Laden had been assassinated by Omar Sheik.  You can view this statement on YouTube....type Bhutto Bin Laden in the search.  Is this true?  Why is this not being reported?
Why is the Bush Administration not putting more effort into finding Osama BinLaden? He is responsible for KILLING 3,000 Americans. Is George afraid of retaliation? Someone needs to ask him! Why did Dick Cheney say that Osama is not a priority? Is it that Osama does not have any oil? Why are gas prices rising so much on George's watch and not on other president's?
Your kidding me with this right? The US could find him if they really wanted him think about it. He has sent tape after tape after tape someone who has contact with him are bringing those tapes. Follow the line backwards. This is some kind of politcal move you can bet your life on that.
George Bush has kept him very safe! This is the reason we havenot found him Yet! He is doing exactly as he is told. I am sure that Bush, Cheney and Bin Laden will all meet in Dubai once George is out of office!
I personally believe OBL has been deceased for some time. But instead of being a martyr, maybe he has arranged for "Hari Seldon" type appearances to continue his cause. That perception is largely derived from the generalities (not specifics) mentioned in his few releases. This machiavelian method could be quite effective - I believe he is too valuable for morale to be a martyr at this time. Maybe I am completely wrong.
of course it wont, your not printing anything what will look like your stupid, and i dont blame you, but again, this smart intelligent force of yours is kissing 'obl' ass,
and wont get any farther then that.
Why don’t Americans wake to the fact that, ‘He’s Dead’. The rest of the world knows this and the Neocons use this boogie man ploy to scare the voters into compliance. He has been dead since Dec 2001. The Media flaunts these half baked Videos and alleged audio recordings as the real thing. Its sad that critical thinking has been replaced by media induced ‘group think’. The FBI has not seen fit to link OBL  to the 9/11.

Now we are in Iraq fighting terrorist/insurgents/radical Muslims under the pretence that this is a war. Let’s be clear here. It’s not a war. The Iraq campaign didn't involve a "Declaration of War". The authority was the "Authorization for Use of Military Force." (AUMF). In 2002 congress voted to give Bush the authority to use Military to invade Iraq and disarm Sadam. There is a radical difference between the two. [Note the term "military"]. It started off as an invasion and has now evolved into an occupation. If you were to ask any of these so called insurgents why they are there they clearly state that they don’t want Americans on their soil and are going to fight in their Jihad to rid their land of the invaders. We are the occupiers. Guess what, they are right. Imposed Democracy is a direct slap in the face on the Islamic world. Such an imposition is this height of arrogance.

“Our message to you is clear, strong and final: There will be no salvation until you withdraw from our land, stop stealing our oil and resources and end support for infidel, corrupt rulers.”
-Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's deputy in Al Qaeda

I wouldn’t surprise me if this posting doesn’t appear. It’s so sad that any opinion that opposes popular opinion is never heard.
We need to level the damn villages already and make a hard and brutal push inside to get Bin Laden and Zawahiri.

We've had it already with them taunting us
Osama is dead!! even if he was alive "they" would not tell us anyways right?! so who cares
this is the best, most clarified explanation of whats going with bin laden or anyone of that nature that i have ever seen. if only politicions would handle questions about issues like this all the time. it helps so much to give just the facts, simply, and save the religious and bravado rhetoric for the Boy Scouts.
At least we know we put our full effort behind finding him and not starting any wars anywhere else or anything first.  Ooops.
how convenient
figures....billions of dollars spent for intelligence and they have no clue...
what a waste of money..
I think a bit too strange that OBL has not been captured, hmm isnt the BL family close friends with the Bush family? Perhaps they dont want to capture one of their wayward kids?
Osama Bin Laden has not been caught because he and his family are personal friends of the Bush,s. And anyone with any common sense knows that George W. Bush is in bed with the Saudis. Dick Cheny and George W. are both sellouts.
We don't need to know exactly where this piece of excriment is. He has no power anymore and is nothing more than a figure head. He will die in his cave. If he mans' up and shows himself our troops will deal him his fate. We know he isn't in Afghanastan or Iraq training soldiers.
No woonder there have been no comments on this...what can one say.  It left me quite speechless for a few minutes and then I became very angry.  What have we been doing over there all this time?  The lives we have lost, the money we have spent, the peopel we have angered...there is nothing gained.  Mr. Bush should be tried for these crimes.
Marinus van Der Lubbe....lok him up and compare.
i think this is just a conspiracy
OBL, who cares where he is hidding he has become inefective,if he is still alive. My best guess is he died some time ago and not even his own people knows where he died.Probably he is buried under tons of rocks in one of his hiden caves.
We can't find Osama because we really don't want to.  When 9/11 first happened and people began to speculate as to whether or not this was something the administration was aware of, they were called nuts or declared off base.  Since that time, whenever things got difficult for Bush and his boys, we got an Osama sighting, video, etc.  Now that things are winding up, it is strange that we no longer have anymore sightings, etc.  Perhaps we can't find him because he is hanging out with his boy Bush.  We do forget that their families were good friends, and that we went there to assist them with pushing the boundry lines of Iraq back, so that the Saudis would have the oil rich fields.  This would allow us to have oil and drive the price up to where it is now. Somehow, I think that Osama is somewhere laughing with Bush at how easy it was to fool and entire nation.  It started with that and has continued for eight years-thank God it will soon be over
Well Well.... how many trillions spent in Iraq?  And Sadam didn't do us any harm..... geez isn't this administration just dandy, and McCain/McBush wants to do more of the same... How stupid can the American public possibly be.. Had we done what needed to be done, it would have been over years ago and 4200 of our soldiers,, bless them all,, would still be alive and well. There is not enough soap in the world to wash their blood from this administrations hands.
I thought we had given up on finding Osama. Our focus has been on Iraq or Iran, did anyone ever stop to think maybe someone in the US is protecting him from capture? Hmmm. Its also intresting how we are so advanced with surveilance we cannot find him, it seems Osama is faster on a camel than we are with a jet.
Why has no comments been posted yet?
I thought the newly installed congress was going to do something about this.  They've had two years to correct the missteps of the current administration and fix the course, but they've done nothing.  I guess they're still being fed misinformation like they were when we got into Iraq.  Or, wait a minute, didn't they have access to the same information the president did?  Oh yeah, it was that wave of 80% job approval rating for Bush in the wake of 9/11 and the desire of the American people to take action that caused the democrats in Congress to push through legislation heightening the executive powers to unprecedented levels.  It's amazing what the numbers in these polls will make members of either party do.  It was the promise of reelection that got the votes for the war in Iraq, not misinformation.  So what's going to change (no matter who's elected)?  Nothing.  Except in the media.  There will continue to be an oozing lovefest for any dem and a bashing and dissection of any republican.  Damn the US is BORING!  Oh yeah, and by the way, for those of you popularity obsessed lefties who want to be recognized by our European allies as forward thinking, don't look now, but conservatives have recently taken over the top political positions in Italy, Germany and France (and the tide is turning back in the UK).  This is amazing since according to media sources and academics everyone in these countries is anti-US and as far left as is humanly possible!
"And yes, there are reports that if he is about to be captured, his bodyguards have orders to “martyr” him"

This is how you know this article is fake and everything about Osama Bin Laden is fake.

No true Muslim will ever kill another muslim.  There is a server punishment for that.  So to think that Osama's bodygaurds will kill him, martyr him if he is about to get captured is false.  Muslims don't do that!  It contradicts everything muslims believe.

Hadith

The sahabas were fighting amongst each other and one killed the other, when the other sahabas asked Rasul-llah (SWAS) about it.  He (SWAS) replied they are both going to hell fire.  They replied "but rasul-llah we understand the one who killed the other but what about the one that died?"

His response was "if he did not die he would of killed him"... the intent was there to kill another muslim and that is against Islam's teachings.

This article just got owned.  Does OBL even exists?  Is a better question.
Thanks for the update...I'm amazed that you don't hear more about updates, I guess the govt. does not want to show their ineptitude. It always seemed very plausible to me that he could be dead, that was under the assumption he had more serious kidney issues requiring dialysis...thanks for clarifying that.
Finding OBL is somewhat akin to expecting a lasting peace in the Middle East.  With all the complex patterns of cave facilities at his disposal in the Afhan/Pakistan border area, he could conceivably remain hidden and well protected for long periods of time with no real need to relocate.  And as you pointed out, with Al-Queida marrying into local clans, he is afforded even more protection that allows him to basically disappear and blend into the many cultures that surround him...and support him.

While I agree that it is in the best interests of a free world to continue to tract his movements, if and when he does move, actually finding him will most likely come down to a blind stroke of luck.  Or unless someone inside his inner circle is willing to come forward and provide truly legitimate logistical information, I don't see the U.S. or any other country for that matter having the resources to mount a fruitful search.

OBL is like the Fidel Castro of the Middle East.  He will most likely live out his life in the familiar terrain of his hideouts.  Someday we may yet receive reliable information that he has died, his effect on the impetus that drives the terrorist movements will be a viable source of moral and loyalty to the cause.  Not to mention that they have always held onto the notion that this is "Jihad".  How do you dissuade someone or some faction to give up the ideals of fighting for the wishes of God?

I just don't see it realistically coming to a definitive ending, except for death by natural causes.  Maybe he will come down with foot rot.
OBL cant hide for ever you know, ever if we kill the top #3 do you think this will stop them ever from doing the things they do ? killing OBL will be a good i deal, but i think it will still go on after he is kill,
I just don't understand? First some history. Bin laden, was an ally of the US in fighting the Soviets in Afganistan. Like our abandonment of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam after WW2, we created two new enemies. Ho and Bin laden. We left Afganistan in turmoil after the Soviets pulled out. No aid, total political choas. What the heck do we expect. First an ally on our payroll, then we abandon them. Not once during the Vietnam war, did our government ever talk about why we fought a war there..it wasn't the domino effect, it was because we let the French back in and back to their rule. Ho had a constitution, based upon ours and all he wanted was our help in establishing a democratic government, free of colonialism. We abandoned him. He got aid from the Chinese, same with Bin Laden. If we look at the history, we can surmise why these people hate us. Of course the US wants him dead...dead men tell no tales! he strikes us, we strike him...we need a new foreign policy.
One day when Mr. OIL/IRAQ, my Daddy and me have made the Bush/BANKERS family rich.

The whole family is connected to some of the worlds leading mass murderers, AKA Hitler, Bin Laden etc.....

Read up on " George Prescott Bush, the family is corrupt. All of Washington is .

Money means more to these people than anything.

Does the US really want to find and "take out" Osama Bin Laden?
I suggest there are two reasons why we dont.
First, as the largely ceremonious head of al-Quaida, OBL is not the sole or key threat to us from the terrorist group. However, a successful hit on him would certainly stir up the terroristic hornets nest and may be the catalyst  for a new wave of attacks.
Secondly, as long as OBL is alive (or thought to be) the US has a face they can put on the "war on terror". The average American associates the extended efforts (and the costs in terms of casualties and dollars) against terrorists as an effort to get back at the culprit behind the 9/11 attacks. Once OBL is captured or killed the "war" becoames a bit nefarious. This wouldnt bode well for those who want to continue the current "war" efforts and strategies.
no one has seen him since august 2000?  O'RLY??

how about our own CIA who met with him in the americal hospital in Dubai all throughout July 2001??
We sure do know where he is. The US government is
hiding him and paying him to provide us with info
on every plan for attack. Just ask almighty Bush
where he is ---why else would we never find him
but can find a needle in a hay stack????
For years they have said Osama, has kidney problems, well excuse me, but the special solutions used to remove the toxins from the blood are all regulated and traceable, so why can't we find him?  Or don't we want to?
All that money and treasure and blood, and we don't even know where OBL is. What fabulous intelligence we have. Of course, we might have more resources if Bush/Cheney hadn't been set on going into Iraq as early as 9/11. What a colossal screw-up this whole episode in our history has been. Man!

As for taking OBL out if/when we ever see him, I'm all for that. He doesn't deserve any sort of protection or a day in court or anything else. We could stand him up in Times Square and let the New Yorkers take care of him. That would be justice.
It is imperative to kill this man (the obvious, and, that still will not end out troubles with terrorist. This is where the democrats are way ahead of the McCain and Bush philosphy that they need to go to war with countries; like Iraq and Iran to stop the terrorist; neither country has had anything to do with any kind of attacks on the US. We have spent billions of dollars, to fight and capture an army of thousands? Elect Obama and the real priorities of our immeidate threat - Small groups of very smart, very dedicated men and we need to attack them with like people not armies and billions of dollars.
OBL is without a doubt the master at hiding.  But with us spending, 3 trillion to date, one might think we could find this bird.  Shameful is the only thing one can say that Clinton chose to keep him alive when we had him in our sights.  But it's obvious he is paying the price for that stupidity now with Ms. Hillary losing out.
God knows where he is and The Lord will punish him for his part in the murdering of so many innocent people. It is amazing how we can find almost anyone anywhere but OBL has avoided beeing apprehended for so long???? Imagine that! There must be someone who is in our gov. who isi an informant
When Obama is elected President, I will be glad to see the emphasis shift from Iraq to nailing Bin Laden and securing Afghan's borders, so we can bring some closure to the 9/11 attacks. We allowed Bush to sideline us into a war with Iraq, because we thought, even if their judgement was flawed, they would not outright lie to us.

So much for THAT idea!
Getting Bin Laden is just not the strategy that McCain Bush and Cheney have.  There's no money in it for these war profiteers.
I think its same to assume the Bush administration does not care where OBL is. Used merely as a pawn to start the so called war on terror, OBL is probably living large either at Kennebunkport Maine, or Crawford TX in a "guesthouse".
Leave Osama Bin Laden alone, go after the real killers Bush and Cheney.
Get our Soldiers out of Iraq, send them to Afghanistan & Pakistan where they should have been sent in the first place,Kill OBL ,Zawahiri,And anyone who else looks like them. Then,Bring our troops HOME!!
This is disturbing but not all that surprising. Obviously, if we knew where he was, we would have gotten him by now. But how important is it to kill him? On the one hand he is not that big a player anymore, but on the other he is an important symbol to all who hate America. And with each passing day his importance grows. Why? Because he attacked the United States, killed 3,000 of our citizens, AND GOT AWAY WITH IT. Not every Islamic extremist wants to be a martyr. The notion of hurting the enemy and living to fight another day must appeal to more people than hurting the enemy and dying in the process. As long as OBL is out there, alive and free, he is mocking the US and inspiring others to try and hurt us.
Even if he is killed, does anyone really think that his death will end terrorism?????
