Where is Osama Bin Laden? An analysis

It isn’t a comforting assessment.

A "Western military analyst" was asked earlier this month about reports that Osama Bin Laden was seen on the slopes of K2, the world’s second highest mountain on the Pakistan-China border, or in the Khost Province of Afghanistan.

His response was stunning in both its honesty and its frustration.

"We don't have a clue where he is or even may be,” the Western analyst said. “We have had NO credible intelligence on OBL since 2001. All the rest is rumor and rubbish either whipped up by the media or churned out in the power corridors of western capitals."

In fact, say U.S. officials, the last time U.S. operatives saw Osama Bin Laden--other than in his own videos--was in the famous Predator video shot in August 2000 where he is seen walking with a security contingent near his compound at Tarnak Farms in eastern Afghanistan.  The Predators had not been armed yet.

The last time the U.S. heard Osama Bin Laden was at the battle for Tora Bora, when an NSA operative overheard him giving orders on a frequency not normally monitored and not recorded.  There were some initial concerns about the identification but the agency later learned from other sources and materials that indeed that had been him.

But that unfortunately is it.

There have been suggestions Bin Laden was wounded, and some speculation he has died. One piece of evidence that suggested he had been hurt was the long interval between videotaped messages from him, but those were a long time ago. A tape released around Christmas 2001--and thus after the Tora Bora battle--was later determined (through time references in the tape) to have been made about November 17, 2001.  After that, there were no contemporaneous videos until the October 29, 2004, tape, the infamous one released just before the U.S. presidential election.  (Don’t be surprised if he does that again; al-Qaida is very cognizant of election dates.)

Still, the US is confident about some aspects of Bin Laden’s life on the run, drawn from interrogations of other high value targets as well as notebooks and computer hard drives captured with al Qaeda officials or found after they were killed.

Where does he live?
Not in caves.  The general belief, gleaned from interrogations of his compatriots, is that Bin Laden lives in one of the many mud-walled compounds that can be found along the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan.  If you fly in a chopper, you will see them--large multi-walled buildings that are continually expanded.  The largest ones are those of the clan leaders.

How often does he move?
Bin Laden is NOT believed to move that often, either. He does not normally change locations every night or even very frequently. He is believed to stay long periods of time--months in some instances--in one place.  In some cases, al-Qaida security personnel have married into local tribes and clans, making them part of the extended family and giving Bin Laden and others additional protection. When he does move, it is not with a large convoy of trucks. (He used to be driven around in a white Mitsubishi Pajero, accompanied by white Toyota Tundras, but those days are long gone.)  The latest information--and it is not current--is that he moves on motorbikes.  One reason is that cars and trucks can be spotted by the roving “J-Stars” aircraft.  Motorbikes cannot be as easily seen. According to Pakistani officials, Bin Laden and other al-Qaida officials move mostly late at night. In the hours after the sunset prayers, they will move into a village and take over a guesthouse in a large compound.

How is his health?
As for his health, he is 50 years old, turning 51 (according to the best estimates) in July.  He does NOT have kidney failure and does NOT need dialysis.  He has had kidney stones.  He is also seen as somewhat of a hypochondriac. He is missing a toe, lost in a battle against the Soviets. He reportedly has an enlarged heart and chronically low blood pressure, which he treats with drugs.  There is even some dispute over his height.  Is he tall?  Yes.  Is he 6’5”?  Maybe not.  As one intelligence official told me, “If you see a guy who is 6’4” tall and looks like him, kill him.”

Who are his bodyguards?
His security personnel are directed by his brother-in-law and believed to include Chechen and Uzbeks as well as Arabs. And yes, there are reports that if he is about to be captured, his bodyguards have orders to “martyr” him.  However, the default position of U.S. forces has always been to kill him, not capture him. Don’t expect heroic efforts to save him, as in the case of Abu Musab al Zarqawi. The same holds true for Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden’s deputy.  The U.S. has Bin Laden’s DNA, which the Saudis provided. It’s always helpful when you have 52 siblings.

How important is he now?
The U.S. believes that OBL is more of a titular, inspirational leader, with Zawahiri as CEO and the leading philosopher. There has been some tension, the U.S. believes, between their Saudi and Egyptian underlings. The Egyptians are in charge, but virtually every counter-terrorism official we talk to notes that North Africans, particularly Libyans, are rising within what they call al-Qaida Central.

Do Bin Laden and Zawahiri travel together?
OBL and Zawahiri have not traveled together since mid 2003, for security reasons. Although the U.S. does not have a clue where OBL is, they have been able to track and target Zawahiri multiple times, by his own accounts.  The most recent targeting was January 13, 2006, in Damodola in Pakistan.  The U.S. fired volleys of Hellfire missiles at two guesthouses, but Zawahiri had already left. U.S. and Pakistani officials have told us that they believe he was tipped off. Zawahiri himself has admitted he was there.

Who is the next most important leader?
The U.S. has deliberately put a high priority on taking out al-Qaida’s Number Threes, killing or capturing five of them since September 11.  They are the directors of international operations, the men who would organize attacks against the United States and United Kingdom. The big prize in each takedown are the computer hard drives, phonebooks and notebooks. To maintain operational security, al-Qaida requires that new courier and computer networks be formed. This obviously slows down planning.  Moreover, the U.S. believes such takedowns are one of the few things that can push OBL’s security team to pick up and move.  The hope is that U.S. spy planes see some of that movement.

Al Qaida’s current No. 3 is Sayed Sheikh, an Egyptian confidante of Zawahari.

We started the War on Terror with an invasion of Afghanistan.  We wanted to dismantle the Taliban and hunt down bin Laden.  Why haven't we been doing that?  Why have we diverted resources and stretched our military to a dangerous point?  We felt so inclined to take down Hussein that now we're suffering in Afghanistand and had to get NATO to take over operations there.  Now what?  Will Bush finally admit mistakes in the Middle East?
Maybe if we'd spent a small fraction of the money we've invested in a second VietNam, called Iraq, we could have hunted down and terrorized the terrorists.  Ol' Osama baby and Zawahari along with the rest of their roach infested buddies would be dead now.
I think Osama Bin Laden is in Kennebunkport, Maine having lobster tails and Clam Chowder with Barbara and George Bush during the summer, and pays an occasional visit to Crawford, Texas during the colder winter months.  Otherwise a Saudi man that wealthy with close ties to the Bush family probably makes his permanent residence in Dubai. He's certainly not been residing in a cave for 7 years like President Bush wants us to believe.
The U.S. does not really want to find him.

Finding OBL would not end Al Queda or terrorism but might end the delusion that capturing top terrorists is a worthy effort in the war on terror.

This "war" ends when cultures understand each other. It is perhaps the most complicated political/diplomatic challenge the Western World has ever faced. No amount of bombing, arresting, interrogating, killing, or warring will ever lead to a peaceful solution to an idealogical conflict. It will most likely prolong it.
Do we have any intelligence on Sayed Sheikh?

It is amazing that the U.S. has no clue for so many years.
This is sad and emberrasing for the American goverment. They either are protecting him and dont want him found or they really are this incompetent and can not find a horses ass in a stable full of steeds. I reaaly do not trust this American government more than I trusted the KGB during the cold war.
Send in a million US troops and carpet-bomb anything that moves.
I would like to see us spend a few billions on capturing him instead of Iraq. He is who we should be at war with.
OBL has been dead for years....cmon people..."W's" war on terror spin has gotten into your heads....
It's a shame Bush and Cheney couldn't figure out a way to make money off killing bin Laden (the way they did by invading Iraq - record oil profits, $10 billion no-bid contract to their friends at Halliburton, millions of dollars of war-related contracts to other friends for their campaign contributions over the years) because if they did we might have killed him by now.
I still find it a coincidence that one of Bin Laden's brothers was a partner in President Bush's first company Arbusto Oil. And that he died in a mysterious Plane crash in South Texas.
Weird.
This blog comes as no surprise. What does Bin Laden have that George W. wants? I find it quite possible that if OBL was sitting in control of an oil field or two, the army would have found and eradicated him.
Oh Please!  You expect us to believe this?  I worked in U2 and Satilite Photography at NPIC back in 1964 during the Kennedy years.  Todays resolution is thousands of times better.  We have sync and Async satilite's and could easily watch the areas where he is suspected to be and identify him.

Remember when the CIA operative was killed and everyone thought that he was there with Special Forces behind the lines fighting.  Not so.  He was there with other CIA personnel to debrief the prisoners; some of which were Human Resorces working for us including some very close to OBL.  Also, please remember that we trained Fedal Castro; Kadafi; OBL; and most other roughs around the world.  There is just so much that you don't really know about our world politic's and who really is controlling them.  I've said way too much and my spelling is miserable.
Bin Laden is just a face needed to direct hate.  The US war machine needs an enemy to focus our hate toward.  Read Orwells novel 1984 and you will understand.  Bin Laden MIGHT be found if and only if the Saudi Royal family fell out of grace with the Bush's.  Since there is no loss in greed, power, and money between them, Osama will be forgotten until the next new war enemy is created.
Our intel sux.
He will be found in Novemeber 2008

Right before George Bush leaves office.

That way Bush can leave with a bang and not be considered a lame duck.
This is all B.S. We know where he is every minute of everyday...... My brother was in the military from 91 to 2003 and he assured me "we know exactly where he is" It is time for the American people to open there eyes and minds and not believe every word the gorverment tells us... Remember... a person is smart, people are stupid.
How does OBL communicate in the mountains? I can't believe radio signals can't be tracked down when here in the US I can be found thru my cell phone signal.
This is preposterous nonsense.  First, why should anyone on the planet believe much of anything NBC "News" says?  There are no good reasons.  Second, the point of this story seems to be that "nobody knows nothing."  Not even the name of the "Western Intelligence Analyst.”  Sorry NBC but this is pathetic.  It doesn't pass the laugh test and even Jon Stewart wouldn't try such low comedy on his audience.  Nice try, now go get a real job.
Here's a clue.
Follow his money...
He's dead.  Been dead a long time.  Al Qaida wants OBL to live forever.  If he was pronounced dead, it would be a big blow to Al Qaida.  Hence they would never let the world know that OBL was dead.  He's dead.
This just further emphasizes the Administration's failure in the war on terror.  Although taking out OBL would be of little strategic value, it would be a hugh PR coup for the war on terrorism.  The inability to do this makes a mockery of our entire efforts.  Instead of taking out the acknowledged leader the Administration persists in fighting a war against a country that had little if any ties to this dangerous movement and now claims every American hating Arab is part of Al Queda.  Does it kind of remind you of the 50's and 60's where every bogey man was a "Communist"  Will we never learn????????
the 2004 tape wasa fake, everyone wit a brain and a set of eyesknows that
We are being fooled by war hawks into believing that Osama is still out there, planning further attacks on U.S and allies.  I am convinced that he is no longer living, but CIA and war and fear mongers continue to keep his name alive to go on fighting .
That's because the real threat to our security is people like Bush and Cheney and the wars they wage, stealing from the taxpayers, murdering innocent children around the globe and not so indirectly creating more fundamentalist nut jobs everyday.
My theory is that the U.S. does know where OBL is.  They always have.  But, since Bush, Sr. is involved in business with the Bin Laden family he will never be caught alive. Sadam Hussein was far from a good guy and not saying that he did not deserve to die, but the who capture and killing was to serve as a distraction.  The ties that Bush's family has with his family are too profitable for them to harm one of the Bin Laden family members.
Nuc the whole country
I have a real problem with the fact that we could locate saddam hussan hiding in a hole in the ground like the rat that he was and even though he was a horrible human being to his people and the world he did not attack the united states yet we attacked his country .while osama bin laden the leader of the attack of our country lives in houses for long periods of time cannot be located its not like the man is small or even normal sized for a saudi he is xtra tall and his face is one we all know it just seems to me if our goverment can find a rat in a hole why not a famous terriost leader who is walking around tall and verbaly baiting this country ?
Is there any chance that Bin Laden could be in the United States and living in Detroit Michigan? Is it possible that he came here right after the 9/11 or before? Is there any real evidence that he was where the United States thought he was?
Bin Laden has been dead since Tora Bora. Forget him and target others.
Check with John McCain. His quote," When I'm President I will get Osama Bin Laden because I know how to do it". Sure would have been nice if he could have shared his "know How" with the folks looking for Bin Laden.
If we knew where he was, why the heck would we paste it on the website of MSNBC? Excellent reporting. Way to think the world revolves around your blog and that people will divulge the whereabouts of OBL to you before all others.
It's the year 2008 in the 21st Century.
Anything and everything we want to know or find out about someone is more readily available to us now than at any time in history.
...And if we want to just forget about someone  as if he never existed, that too can be done.
we seriously need to find this guy, i believe that if he is found it would change the whole outcome in all the muslim states
As a former military person, ive seen sat photos that were so clear that you can read a licence plate from 23000 miles away, I cant belive that the people that do the decoding of those photos are really doing a very poor job of it or there
supervisors are being told to not to see certain
events.  Its just more of the same spin-doctoring
that has permeated every office in government
so He's a GHOST, huh??? send in the Exorcist, for Crimes Sake! Its Pretty pitiful to have all the Middle East LAUGHING at OUR efforts to get this guy. He's a snake, and should be treated as such.... Forget Baghdad, get Osama, and save MILLIONS of lives worldwide, not only Americans....That should be OUR PRIORITY MISSION.
Bin Laden died in 2002 as a result of a US missile attack.  The FBI and other high level Government officials acknowledged this but within hours craw-fished and claimed they killed a 6 foot tall scrap metal dealer that just happened to have several dozen well armed employees all taking direction from him.  There are several good, non political reasons why the US Government has played this Bin Laden is out there somewhere charade these past few years. Gathering intelligence, not to mention the number of weak kneed boneheads who would claim the war on terrorism is over if they knew we had killed Bin Laden. Before this missile strike all the Bin Laden video had been crystal clear, animated, well lit, up close, you could count the pores on his nose. Since that 2002 missile strike the only video we see is either archival footage of him climbing around the rocks, or a poorly lit, soft focus, practically motionless image of a man claiming to be Bin Laden 30 feet away from the camera.  No close ups.  This bad camera work is not by accident.
Isn't HE the person behind 9/11?  Again, why are we in Iraq?
The man is a billionaire. Try a presidential palace, or even a mosque. The Iranian president said in 2006 he wanted closer ties with Al-Q.  Or, start with the arab falcon camps. But, if you truly want to find him, start dropping fliers all over ME as to amount of bounty on his head. They all turn on each other over money and/or martyrdom. Why accept $10,000 to safely harbor him, when one can receive millions in turning him in?
its totally incredible that in 2008 we cannot find this jerk. my God  !!!!!
Why would the US want to find bin Laden?  If that were to happen who would the current adminstration use as a "terrorist" target?
He is in East Africa...............accesable to Arabia by Dhow and overland to Cario...........timeline the video tapes
There was a time when a newsman would and could confirm their sources when they wrote their columns.  Now, by quoting the unnamed source, your opinion can be hidden in subjection.  You my friend are a sleazy idiot, if you don't have proof, don't say it.
seems rather simple to me....what we should have done in the first place....gone after OBL  in a massive way....NOT invade Iraq...now were much worse off in so many ways.. still say it...go after him...get him and his group....with whatever it takes..
During the 911 attack and soon thereafter, All aircraft were ordered to land immediately. It didn't matter who you were or where you were going, just get on the ground. Let's imagine Bin Laden was on a private jet coming to see his attack unfold. He may even be in the US or Canada today as we search for him elsewhere.
obl may be well and alive but he will be hunted until found and killed. "Live with that thought that tomorrow is the day". Our super Navy Seals and Delta Force are on the job.
"churned out in the power corridors of western capitals"

That is where he and al-qaida (the toilette) were created.
Acording to a egyptian news report  he died of medical problems in late 2001 .He also was last seen getting med.treatment in the gulf states. The Cia also was told to back off with capture.By the way he also was a CIA operative at one time.So the mistery solved. The WAR ON TERROR IS BOGUS AND 9-11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB.It was the "NEW PEARL HARBOR" TO GET AMERICANS IN A WAR MODE.REMEMBER NO WMD"s found.Just ask the inspectors.
when you identify your source only as a  "Western military analyst" wll that wipes out all crdability
I would think it very hard to find someone you are not looking for.

Of what good would finding Mr. Bin Laden at this point in time.  It will not shorten the War efforts and him might just be someone you do not want talking too the press.
