KSM still in charge

Held totally incommunicado – first by the CIA, now by the U.S. military – since his capture more than five years ago, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-confessed mastermind of 9/11, has not lost his touch or his powerful grip over his al-Qaida foot soldiers. It took him only 15 minutes Thursday to reestablish that authority.

As one of some 30 journalists who attended his arraignment before a U.S. military commission at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, it all unfolded right before my eyes.

As we were escorted into the courtroom, Mohammed, also known as KSM, could at first be seen casually chatting and laughing with his four co-defendants: Ramzi Binalshibh, Walid Muhammad bin Attash, Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali and Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi. It was the first time they were all together in at least five years.

Within minutes, the casual banter turned more serious. Although we could not hear what was being said because we were confined to a soundproof booth in case someone had a slip of the lip and uttered something the government considered classified, we could see that KSM had clearly taken charge. With a stern glare and exaggerated hand gestures, it appeared he was issuing orders to those nearest to him, which in turn were passed down the line. It wasn't until the hearing was under way that our suspicions were confirmed.

Given his chance to speak, KSM launched into a rant, which was punctuated with chants from the Quran, which he would pause to translate before moving on. After declaring the U.S. justice system "evil," he told the court he was rejecting his government-appointed attorneys because they worked for "George Bush, who has waged a crusader war against Afghanistan and Iraq." He said he would represent himself in the criminal proceedings and boldly announced that all four fellow defendants would do the same. It appears now the other defendants had no choice. They were under orders from their commander.

KSM created "an undercurrent of intimidation in the courtroom," Army Col. Steve David, the chief military defense counsel, later told reporters.

One by one, each of the defendants fell in line and rejected their defense attorneys, but not all voluntarily. Al-Hawsawi, charged with providing money, clothing and credit cards to the 9/11 hijackers, was a reluctant warrior in KSM's latest conspiracy.

Army Maj. Jon Jackson, al-Hawsawi's military defense counsel, said his client "was shaking" as a result of intimidation from KSM. Jackson said he spent 20 hours building confidence and rapport with his client only to have it "totally destroyed" after five minutes with KSM. When al-Hawsawi hesitated to sign on to KSM's plan, Jackson said the al-Qaida leader threateningly asked, "What, are you in the American Army now?" The threat of being labeled a traitor was apparently enough for al-Hawsawi, who ultimately jettisoned his defense team.

"With (KSM), it's all about control," Jackson told reporters.

After five years in solitary, coercive interrogation that some say borders on torture, and now faced with certain lifelong imprisonment if not a death sentence, KSM still thinks he has it.

Update: The editors had written "Iran" instead of "Iraq" in the previous copy. We regret the error.

You miss the point my dear fellow.  It's not that KSM thinks he still has it; it's that the four co-defendants and others like them in Guantanamo and around the world think he still has it.
Si KSM consigue prision perpetua los EEUU podran ser atacados pidiendo la libertad de este terrorista plese be smart death is the best solution
Just some say that it borders on torture?  Doesn't the international community and John Mccain consider water boarding torture?  Wasn't this court set up so that evidence could be heard that was gained through(coercive interrogation.)  They wouldn't accept it in our own courts.
What did the "judges" and their combattants expect? Al Quaeda is an army - built up with US money and advisors (see "Charlie's War"). They are an Army with a military structure of command. So, it is silly to talk about Sheikh Mohammed creating "an atmosphere of intimidation". If anything, it as an atmosphere of "freedom within the soldiers' solidarity".
Let's face it: Guantanamo itself is Intimidation at its worst: coercion, torture, threats at prisoners' families - what worth would anything said there have? Any "confession"? Humbug. Any claim that these were results of "later re-interrogations", i.e. past torture? Rubbish. Once tortured  never speaking freely again - not to the persecutors.
And let us not forget: about 140 to 160 former Guantanamo prisoners who were "repatriated" to Afghanitan, were promptlt incarcerated there in 10 minute "trials" on evidence not even the Guantanamo "tribunals" would accept. o, even an acquittal would not mean anything.
But acquittals are not likely. What Sheikh Mohammed has done is justone thing: He blocked the way of pretending "fair trial" by finding a "fig-leaf" here or there for a "non guilty" or "leniency". He re-grouped his platoon, like a good officer, in battle formation.
Once more, this proves: he is a soldier in a war. Mr. Bush himself declared his activities as "War Against Terror". He forgot, like many Americans, that this 9/11 was not the first one - see 1973 in Chile, where terror ruled almighty. But apart from that:
Soldiers actions have to be distingished: are they Acts of War or Crimes of War? This should be tested in an International Court of Justice - BUT: the US have not rcognized that court in The Hague. Why not? I guess, we all know: the whole Bush Cabinet would have to appear there in the Dock. But as things are: We'll be entertained by a wombat trial in a kangaroo court.

You cannot torture a man for 5 years and expect him to behave like a "good ol boy". KSM, I am sure, hates The U.S. more now than he ever did. He is no boy scout and don't expect him to behave like one. When our we going to understand that not every country is like ours. We expect Iraq to be like America; it is not. American democracy is not something that every one puts on their wish list. Treat people with respect and dignity and they in time will reciprocate. God Bless America, but we have a lot to learn about the rest of the world. KSM was created not born. He was created by our disdain and our arrogance and now we have to show that we are not crusaders by not being crusader like. God help us all!
I wonder why the military court allowed these 4 persons to appear together? A terrible strategic mistake and damage irreversibly done to isolate them and try them separately.
Regarding these proceedings maybe KSMs way of doing business is better than our.  He would have Shoot (or cut) first and talked later.  Why do we give into to these terrorist and allow them to make a mockery of our legal system? Put him against the wall and shoot him.
i have one question: how often are prisoners briefed, if any at all, about events outside?

The free publicity these radical sociopaths milk from the media would feed a third world country for a year. Without all this free publicity their so-called movement would be dead in the water and the world of the majority could normalize somewhat.
It is sad that we are hated by people who do not understand our way of life.  Who live to destroy the American Dream.  We are not evil.
To all you liberals out there that still insist on treating these radicals with kitt gloves and feel that they may be reasoned with! Think again because it is not possible, not in ten lifetimes.
Or maybe you would like to adopt and take him home, giving him warmth and love knowing in your mind he will return it to you and your family?
Obviously Al-Hawsawi made his decision to dismiss court appointed counsel under duress!  Monsters like KSM prey on men who can be intimidated into compliance with his will.  Maybe Al-Hawsawi was a victim as well.  I wonder if he will be given  an opportunity to change his mind and  have a fair trial without having to be controlled by KSM.
Glad to read KSM is taking charge of his own defense - less of my tax dollars spent defending this guy!!!!
Miklaszewki may have tapped into something far more sinister than meets the eye. The whole Islam is about intimidation and control! It's not a submission to Allah,  but to the sheiks! This should be taken into account when dealing with the renegade sheik, al-Sadr! he has been trying to intimidate the Sunnis for a long time with exact same mantra: that "the occupier went on a crusade against Islam," Iraq, and Afganistan!
Rope.  Tree.  Terrorist.  Some assembly required.
Miklaszewski doesn't get it... KSM still has control - clearly amongst his followers and with the public reports he will be turning into a hero amongst Al Quaeda supports.

This is exactly because Bush has allowed the use of torture and enforced military tribunals instead of a fully guaranteed public trial.  Too bad for US citizens.  Another loss in the war on terror.
i can only hope there is wisdom enough in the end to make the sentence life in prison so as to deny any of them the self-satisfying concept of martyrdom. aside from that, the less exposure their rants get, the better.
Apparently the court knew KSM would do this. Why were the prisoners not charged seperately? One at a time. I understand by the text that there were different charges for each individual. The individuals have a right without threat of retaliation. Yet we put them in a situation that we are fighting a war against. How ironic is that?
This man is a master manipulator, and as such I am amazed that the U.S. Gov't would try all the defendents together. Any phychiatrist could have warned them they would only lose control of the overall situation if they tried them together. (Witness Sadam Hussein's trial). I would like to make a second point: to give this man the death sentence, which he wants, as it will make him a martyr to his cause; would be another major mistake. He should be put in prison, solitary confinement, with a life sentence for every person that died on 9/11. It's hard to be a martyr while you are still alive, eating well, worshiping as you choose and watching color TV in air conditioning (especially when the vast majority of your followers don't have more than 2 of any of the above.
This is why we may lose the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This is why we may lose the war against the terrorist in the Middle East.
Patience.
The proof is in the pudding. After five years of interment, nothing has changes with these 9/11 terrorist. NOTHING!
It’s all about control. (They already have influenced our airports…our security…our freedoms…)
After five years of war...on our TVs… daily…many things have changed in America.
I sure hope I'm wrong about losing this war.
Yet…we have been at war with this type of mentality since before  400 B.C.
Have a look at the Persian Empire…its history, its war like attitude, its control basis and standard operating procedure. You may find that we have been fighting against this mentality since the beginning of time.

Read…for the love of God…read!

It figures.  In Islamic interpretation; it is a crime NOT to frustrate Westerners (or kill them).  The other four had their cultural values challenged.
If only John McCain had had that kind of fortitude as a prisoner of war.
Yeah, he's in charge. Big time. In charge of 4 brainwashed losers whose jihad days are over and they are all headed for the firing squad. What a masterful leader of men.
lies,lies,lies.
9-11 was an inside job!!
Five years of secret prisons, subject to torture and  without recourse to due legal process, this must be one angry man. I would confess to anything in the circumstances - ask John McCain.
Let them have an open trial. justice cannot be served in secret. Truth must come out.
So, one more time, we failed! And, we are not very smart!
They killed more than three thousand of our fellow Americans! Remember that! And now they are in our hands, and we still cannot do anything!
We separated them for at least five years. Can we now trial them separately? Who organized the court system?
Very disappointed!
And if I was in charge, they would die like rats!
After all these years 9-11 is still fresh in my mind. I for one will never forget! Please do not let these people go! Given the chance they will kill every American just for being an American! The post 9-11 world cannot have men like KSM controling anything.
Why hold trial...........guilty.......hang him like we did Sadam?
why don't your ruling court just finish of this KSM. why should we give them a chance to appeal when they have done the 9/11 without any mercy.
He wants to be executed to be a martr.  Give it to him he will not be a nartr,  he will be just another dead terrorist. the rest want to fall in line with him; get them too.
BORDERS on torture??????????  What planet are you on! Gov actions against detainees have beed clearly DESCRIBED as 'torture', and many even in government subscribe to that rational conclusion!!!

re:

"After five years in solitary, coercive interrogation that some say borders on torture, and now faced with certain lifelong imprisonment if not a death sentence, KSM still thinks he has it."
they should hand him over to the families of the victims of 9/11 and let them decide his fate!
You have the NERVE to censure my comments here??
You are now part of the problem .. you 've relinquished all rights to represent any voice of the public!
Big mistake even letting him be together with them.  He has probably threatened their families and now what choice do they have?
yes they are bad boys and should be punished
but george bush should go first
EYE FOR AN EYE !!!  The problem is, he doesn't have enough eyes.
Why after five years of separation would we allow these defendants to have contact with each other in the courtroom.  Looks like we dropped the ball.  Good work guys!!!
Well, KSM asked for the death penalty. I say we should grant his wish.
What nonsense. KSM is in control of nothing.

It is sad that our liberal press is so interested in handing this criminal an unearned propaganda victory. He's "in charge" beacuse he sneers for 20 minutes? Give me a break.

What a disgrace.
George W. Bush has advanced KSM's agenda, by torturing suspects, and having his approval level at an all-time low! I'm just glad John MCcain is not a prisoner of war now!
Come on... this is evil... these Men should have been held, tried, and executed long ago (instead they were tortured and held in a secret prison).  I have no feelings or pity for these "people" but you are backing up their claims!!!  The U.S.A.  is not what it used to be!
HE SHOULD NOT GET THE DEATH pENALTY, I'D RATHER SEE HIM PUT IN A MILITARY PRISON WITH THE GENERAL POPULATION AND HAVE THEM REMINDED EVERYDAY OF WHAT KSM DID TO OUR COUNTRY AND THE 300 VICTIMS.  lET HIM GET SOME JAILHOUSE JUSTICE INSTEAD OF BEING A MARTYR.  OR LET US FOLLOW PUNISHMENT FROM HIS OWN RELIGION AND BEHEAD HIM AND KEEP HIM FROM SEEING ALLAH.  WHY MUST WE BE THE ONLY ONES THAT FOLLOW A CODE OF ETHICS WHEN IT COMES TO WAR.  THIS WHOLE THING WOULD'VE BEEN OVER YEARS AGO IF WE FOUGHT THEY WAY THEY DO AND KILL INDISCIMITABLY.  UNTIL WE FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE WE WILL EITHER BE AT WAR OR UNDER CONSTANT ATTACK.  ALL THESE PEOPLE KNOW IS WAR AND THEY WILL NOT STOP UNTIL WE ARE ALL GONE.
Is it too much trouble to use the man's name, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed? It's shoddy reporting Jim. Just plain shoddy.
So, KSM is a maniacal control freak.  What kind of whimpy news is that.  Such people typically  populate such movements.  What disappoints me is the fact we have incarcerated these whackos for five years.  Can anyone explain why the U.S. has, so readily, ditched its respect and trust in our  long-standing and well ordered legal system?
It bothers me much more that in the face of such sycophants we succumb to fear so conveniently.
Witness tamporing/intimidation shouldn't be allowed in ANY courtroom. If the judge/judges allow this type of behavior, they will be made out to look like fools in the eyes of the world.

This is excellent coverage of the story and extremely important observation. People forget that the 911 hijackers lived in the US for 5 years before they carried out their plan. It is indeed frightening, but important to understand the hold that al-Qaida has on it's members.
This report makes no sense. What does 'chants from the Qur'an' mean? Did the reporter means that he recited verses from the Qur'an?

As usual we don't get honest news reports because most of the 'White House or Pentagon' correspondents have become advocates for this present administration's policies.
Why is this not surprising, and the leftwingers still think these animals can be dealt with in a normal manner?
9/11 was an inside job. Who ya kidding?
