FBI: No Marilyn Monroe sex film

By Jim Popkin, NBC News Senior Investigative Producer

The FBI does not have a pornographic home movie of actress Marilyn Monroe in its files and never did, FBI officials tell NBC News. Document analysts at the FBI have completed a manual search of FBI records and found no evidence of the film.

“The records show no indication we ever had such a film,” said David Hardy, who organized the search and is chief of the FBI Record/Information Dissemination Section. Hardy said six or seven FBI analysts spent a total of  “32 man hours” reading through paper documents at the FBI’s records center in Alexandria, Va., and did not find anything indicating that the FBI has or ever had a Marilyn Monroe sex film.

The FBI’s fruitless search casts doubt on claims by New York memorabilia dealer Keya Morgan, who told countless media organizations on April 14 that the FBI had obtained a copy of the sex film in the 1960s. Morgan told NBC News and other networks and newspapers that nine FBI agents and the late FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover himself had spent weeks poring over the film, trying to establish the identity of the man who supposedly engaged in a sex act with Monroe in the 15-minute black-and-white movie.

The film “was analyzed by the FBI labs in Washington and New York City. It is absolutely her, 100 percent. It is Marilyn,” Morgan said on the MSNBC program “Verdict with Dan Abrams.” “I don’t know who the man is. J. Edgar Hoover was obsessed with trying to determine if that was JFK [President Kennedy] or not.”

Morgan generated international headlines after he told reporters that he had personally discovered the film, from the son of a former FBI informant, while researching a documentary on the death of Marilyn Monroe. Morgan said he then brokered the sale of the tape, for $1.5 million, to a wealthy New York businessman who chooses to remain anonymous and will not show any portion of the film out of respect for Monroe’s memory.

As part of his purported evidence, Morgan pointed reporters to three pages of old FBI documents that discuss an alleged sex film involving Monroe. Morgan said the documents, publicly available through the FBI’s Freedom of Information Act Web site, prove that the FBI had a copy of the sex film.

On MSNBC, Morgan waved the FOIA documents and said, “Well, FBI.com, that’s all I could say.  Go to the last three pages of the Marilyn Monroe files…they are verified documents.  And on the sheet they have the fact that Marilyn Monroe -- that it was analyzed by the FBI, labs in Washington and New York City.”

The FBI documents:
But a careful reading of the four-decade-old documents calls Morgan’s analysis into question. The three pages, dated 1965, state that an FBI informant told his FBI handler that he had been in a New York gangster’s office and had seen a “French-type movie which depicted Marilyn Monroe, deceased actress, in unnatural acts with an unknown male.” The documents state that the informant did not get a copy because the gangster “would not part with it.” And there’s no indication in the three pages that the FBI Laboratory or anyone at the Bureau ever got a copy. In fact, the documents include a brief memorandum stating that the FBI Lab “has no information concerning Marilyn Monroe’s participation in a film as described in the attached communication.” (The popular Web site, Smoking Gun, has raised similar questions about Morgan’s FBI claims.)

David Hardy, the current FBI official who oversees the FOIA Section, confirmed that the FBI Lab never had a copy of the tape back in 1965. He said the three FOIA pages make it clear that the FBI had an informant’s description of the film but not the film itself. He added that J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI’s legendary director, ordered scrupulous note keeping of nearly everything - even embarrassing and incriminating activities such as the FBI’s wiretapping of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - and yet there’s no mention anywhere of the film being in the FBI’s possession. Hardy said he even quizzed the FBI historian and veteran employees about any such film.

“The old timers who have worked with records for a long time say they have never seen any record of the film,” Hardy added.

So, who is Keya Morgan?
As interviews with more than a dozen business associates, friends and enemies make clear, Keya Morgan is a controversial figure in the historical memorabilia field with a penchant for self-publicity.

On his current Web site, Morgan says he has “actively been in the pursuit of buying and selling authentic historical items” since 1989. An older version of the same website says he has been in the business since 1986.

In extensive interviews with NBC News, Morgan refused to provide a birth date because, he said, he has received numerous death threats and is reluctant to share personal information. But public records indicate he was born in 1975, which would mean that Morgan is boasting online of business experience that began when he was 11 years old, or 14 years old at best. (Morgan explains that, as a boy, he began hawking goods at flea markets.)

Morgan’s Web site also states that his gallery “is located in the heart of New York City with affiliations worldwide: London, Paris, Rome, and Bonn.” When questioned about the international locales, Morgan told NBC News that “I have cousins there who own businesses,” including a rug store and an electronics shop.

The gallery address Morgan provides on his website is “14 Wall Street” in New York. In documents submitted last year in a pending copyright lawsuit filed against Morgan in federal court, a plaintiff’s lawyer complains of “great difficulty” in finding Morgan to serve him with legal papers. “We have a good number of potential addresses for the defendant, but none of them ultimately lead to any connection with the defendant,” the lawyer writes. Morgan acknowledges in his own legal document that the 14 Wall Street address is “merely a post office address” in a service center. (Morgan said the lawsuit has no merit and said the lawyers must be incompetent if they had trouble finding him to serve him with legal papers.)

Morgan would not provide NBC News with the actual address for his gallery, again citing death threats against him. Later, he said the gallery was attached to his home.

Lincoln, Grant and the other Monroe:

Morgan is convinced that Marilyn Monroe was murdered, and he’s working on a documentary that he said would prove it. “It was a conspiracy. I will prove there was a serious, massive conspiracy that led to her murder that involved different branches of the government,” he told NBC News.

And yet he’s quick to point out that Marilyn and the raunchy home movie are but a sideshow in his life: “I’m not a sex dealer. I’ve devoted my life to Lincoln,” he said.

Morgan describes himself as serious scholar of presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. “I’ve spent my life trying to preserve the history of this nation,” he said.  Indeed, interviews with several friends and clients indicate that Morgan has bought and sold Lincoln and Grant photographs and other historical memorabilia for years.  Ulysses S. Grant VI, a descendant of the president, now runs a construction business in Missouri. He said Morgan has helped sell “over a million dollars worth of stuff” for the Grant family. Will Stapp, a former curator at the National Portrait Gallery, called Morgan an “ardent historian” with deep knowledge about “historical American portraiture of the 19th Century.”

Many collectors and business associates admire and trust him. Singer Antonia Bennett is a friend and admirer who told NBC News that Morgan provides her with valuable business advice. Morgan also is in talks with Peacock Productions, a division of NBC News, regarding a production deal, executives there said.

Morgan is fond of celebrities, and his imdb (Internet Movie Database) page features photographs of Morgan posing at charity events with Tom Hanks, Paris Hilton, Bill Clinton and many other stars. His clients, he says, are A-listers, too. “I have a few other very high-profile people, who are the most high-profile people in the world right now, who are my clients,” Morgan said.

But several historical-artifacts dealers who have done business with Morgan over the years tell NBC News that many of Morgan’s claims deserve close scrutiny. They say Morgan has a reputation in their business as a self-promoter who is prone to exaggeration. They would only speak to NBC on condition of anonymity.

Morgan sharply disputed the critiques. He said he enjoys a sterling reputation in his business and said that any detractors are envious. “When somebody is young and they accomplish a lot of things, there’s a lot of jealousy.” He added: “You’ve gone to a bunch of old ladies who absolutely hate me, who are extremely jealous of me, they are feeding you these lies…”

Court records indicate Morgan has a clean record.

Some Marilyn Monroe experts question Keya Morgan’s reliability, too. As Morgan is fond of mentioning, he interviewed former Los Angeles Police Chief Darryl Gates as part of the ongoing Marilyn Monroe documentary he is producing. Gates told NBC News he recalls the on-camera interview but said he found Morgan’s murder conspiracy theory to be absurd. “I was very unimpressed with him,” Gates said. “I did not find him to be credible whatsoever. And you can put that on the record,” Gates said.

Morgan is not swayed. “Had you seen my documentary, you would have the most respect on the planet for me,” he said.

Proof of life?
So does the Marilyn Monroe sex film actually exist? Keya Morgan said he swears that it does. And he provided NBC News with what he said is a bill of sale for the film, dated March 7, 2008. The names of the buyer and seller are blacked out and the $1.5 million film is described as a “16mm ‘French-type’ motion picture/home movie of Marilyn Monroe performing oral sex on an unknown male...No copy has been made other than the one that was provided to the FBI in the 1960s.” Morgan would not allow NBC News to publish the document and provided no other information to authenticate the document.

He also would not provide any other corroborating evidence. Examples:

  • Morgan refused to provide a still photo of the film and would not identify the buyer or seller.
  • He would not name the lawyer who handled the sale.
  • He would not identify the former FBI Agent who supposedly told Morgan about the existence of the Monroe film (even though Morgan says that FBI Agent will appear on camera in Morgan’s documentary.)
  • Morgan’s own lawyer would not corroborate if his client had ever discovered a Marilyn Monroe film. “Attorney-client privilege,” the lawyer said.

Why can’t Morgan help authenticate the existence of the film or identify the mysterious anonymous buyer? “I signed a confidentiality agreement,” he pleaded.

Yet another document Keya Morgan says he can’t provide.

If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck (please insert fraud in the place of duck)...

Gee, why didn't I become a con man like mama wanted me to be?
“Had you seen my documentary, you would have the most respect on the planet for me,” he said.

Morgan sounds like a self-promoting little jack-hole.  Even if he was 100% correct, it would still be hard to take him seriously because of his WAY over-inflated ego.  He would do well to tone down his sense of "greatness", and then there probably wouldn't be quite so many "little old ladies"  who apparently hate him.  haha
What a hoax.  Another wanna be documentary writer attempting to boost his fame and probably an unauthorized biography of Marilyn Monroe.  Dribble, Dribble, Dribble.  Leave the dead alone, and deal with matters of today.  Geesh, does anybody care about gas prices, dead soldies, children without father, AIDS, starving children, rape, murder, or mass suicide.  I guess these things aren't important....
I had a gut feeling from the very beginning of all of this hoopla, that it smelled like dirty laundry. Unforunately, media runs with whatever story is on the hot plate, instead of actually checking it's facts. I read this story when it first broke, and being a avid monroe fan, was completely surprised by what I was hearing. Now that the actually foot work and research has been collected on this person making these outrageous claims, it seems that my initial feeling were correct. PLease take notice of this as weak journalism, anmd maybe the media will be more careful next time.
until he proves it, it is all crap
Okay so I don't know which is more worse.  The FBI wasting tax dollars to debunk this claim or MSNBC wasting reporters salary to air this non newsworty issue.
What a bozo this guy is.  He is clearly full of it and should be strung up by his cajones for tarnishing our dear Marilyn.
Wow, I'm glad our FBI agents are spending quality time ("32 man hours") to better our nation's security.

-Chris
Keya Morgan is a filthy liar.  All he wants to do is make headlines and money off of poor Marilyn. I can't think of enough vile names to call this jerk.  He should crawl back under the rock he came from.
Mr. Popkin, I would not put a bet down that there was not a film.  There were 2 off color short films floating about at Ft. Polk, during the Cuban Missile crisis, with limited viewing. A Monroe and one of Candy a well endowed blond stripper from a Dallas strip club, I think the club where Jack Ruby hung out.  It’s been a long time ago, and my memory of those times has faded, most of my associates of the time are deceased.  I like the others have no proof just some recollections. At the time Candy and Jack Ruby were just names to me, I did not visit those establishments. I find it interesting that this is now coming up, back then those were back room occurrences, where today its common place.
Wow, who cares!? Who cares about a sex tape of an actress whos been dead for decades? It doesnt matter now, it never mattered to begin with, and I think there are far more important things to write about and report than pointless journalistic stupidity. Its not like energy concerns, the War, our Economy, and our society arn't more important things to write about and weigh in on. Seriously MSNBC, get a life.
If the FBI was so sure they did not have a copy of the sex tape, why did 7 agents spend 32 hours trying to find it?

Why is it that the FBI has a Dr. King sex tape?

Where is that tape?

The film the Morgan guy is making is still being made, how is it that Gates knows its not good before its even made?

I also just saw the last three pages on FBI website. It says DiMaggio offered $25,000. Why would he offer that much if it was a fake?

I am really glad to know that my tax money is going to FBI agents trying to find a porn tape.
Who the hell is this guy in all of his photos the stars look at him like hes a nut and its clear they dont know him maybe he likes the fame . As a MM fan I think this is sick why would a true fan buy this video he is seeking publicity period. Check out his photos . He is not a trustworthy person and I think it is all phoney . Money doesn't make the man . The stars are like what the hell......
Just let Marilyn rest in peace..So what if theres a sex tape she was human just like the rest of us except she was famous. She was a wonderful person who accomplished alot in her short life..she went through so much as an adolescent and into adulthood. Marilyn is my idol I can relate to her real life story..leave her alone...
COME ON WHO CARES. LETS TALK ABOUT THIS WAR WE'RE IN . THE MEN THAT HAVE DIED, FAMILIES WHO LOST THIR DAD'S,MOM'S. COME ON LETS GET OUR EYES ON GOD AGAIN.
Give the guy a break - he is just trying to protect what little privacy he has left. If I brokered big deals like that I would not disclose any information eithier out of privacy and the fact it is no one elses damn business. Good find however, maybe one day we'll all get to see it..
The fact that MSNBC devotes that much space to a crackpot like Morgan tends to diminish its own credibility.
I believe Marilyn Monroe was murdered and that there is a sex tape. I would not go by any government official's opinion and believe there are more coverup's that the public is not aware of. We are supposed to be living in a democracy with the freedom of speach but there are greater forces at work here.
There's a lot of idiots here.  He doesn't have the tape, and he wasn't the one that sold it.  He didn't destroy it because it wasn't his to destroy.  He just said there he knew there was a tape to help promote his movie.  As for other stupid comments, the FBI doesn't have a MLK tape, the article says they wiretapped MLK(To help prove their claim of meticulous record keeping, even of embarassing facts) and people who suspect a government conspiricy have a rather high opinion of government efficiency and secrecy.  They can't even keep regular scandals(sex, bribary, wiretapping the country) a secret, how could they hide several conspiricies.  How would a conspiricy even form?  Would any politician really want to trust anybody else with the kind of career-ending information necessary to make them a co-conspiritor?  For the FBI, saying they had some agents look through their archives(probably a good idea anyway, I wonder if they found anything else) is probably a much better idea than telling the media they refuse to check because they're confident. And if you people want "better" news, try some of the other articles on the right side of this one.  An article about insurgents buying uniforms looks like it might be a better use of your time.  Ok, maybe you people aren't "idiots" but you should read the article before making assumptions about it, and while asking questions is good, I really think you should actually look for the answer if you truly care.
32 man hours to research whether or not there is grainy footage of an overrated celebrity, who has been DEAD for DECADES, going down on an unidentified man, who has also probably been dead for decades?  WHO CARES!! Well, since there are no violent crimes in this country, no terrorism, no spies selling government secrets to foreign countries, I guess the FBI had to find some way to spent thier time.  Absolutely absurd.
We must get to the bottom of this. We need a special investigation. Lawyers, polititions, and reporters galor.
Why has this taken so long? Someone find a backhoe. We'll have to exume the body.
In the type of business he is in, providing your clients of case histories of documented and authentic items, it seems unusual that such a smart business man would not stipulate some proof of existance to boost his claims as an authentic historian.  The benifit of doing so while keeping the client secret and showing respet for MM makes it seems a strange way of promoting your abilities as an artifac dealer.
The FBI often have their reasons for the secrets they have kept, but as time goes on I hope the freedom of information act helps us learn more than they have ever been willing to divulge on their own to date. Everything must be taken into consideration, read between the lines, scrutenize, weigh all the possible options, decide for yourself what to believe.
You know, people are gullible and this just goes to show.  Even if it is true, it still is a half-centruy out of relevance.

Look, people, today's news is important.  Life and death decisions are being made and most citizens are wasting their time and attention chattering about old movie stars and young vapid starlets.

A responsible media would not waste our time covering this.  Reputable journalists used to call this kind of thing "Yellow Journalism" and avoided it like the plague that it really is.

Your government is taking your rights.  The administration and congress are stealing your earnings, and the president is spending the last of the social security funds on a war that has no benefit to America, that our children will be paying for a long time to come.

Quit reading this crap and find out what is really going on!

Find a real news source and read it.  Doubt anything that comes from official sources.  Think for yourself.  Tell your friends when you find out the lies you are being told daily by media and "unidentified sources".
The FBI is accused of being in many conspiracies, and I believe this guy, Morgan.  I also believe Marilyn Monroe was murdered.
Either there's an error in the article, the FBI is incorrect, or the FBI is misleading. The statement "David Hardy, the current FBI official who oversees the FOIA Section, confirmed that the FBI Lab never had a copy of the tape back in 1965" is odd because the FBI would not have made a tape back in 1965, but instead a film dupe. There was no low-level casual use of videotape in 1965 because recorders were big expensive things owned by networks. Pornographers didn't use tape back then, they used film.
Just because the FBI says the film doesn't exist doesn't mean it DOES!
For people who love conspiracy theories, lack of evidence - or, even worse, evidence which contradicts their theory - is actually seen as further proof of a conspiracy.

Logic cannot be squared away with circular reasoning like this, so all one can do really is to just shake one's head and laugh at the absurdity... and try to educate those who are willing to let facts shape their opinions.

As the president of a large Marilyn Monroe fan club I've seen it all... Marilyn had 6 toes on one foot, was the model for Tinkerbell, sang the song Santa Baby, oh yeah, and let's not forget the Apples, Coke Bottles, and Knockers stag film -and the photo of Marilyn hitch-hiking in the nude.

The one thing that all this proves is that at least Marilyn Monroe is still being remembered so many years later after she died. Which, to us fans, is proof that she was worthy of her fame.

Wow - I just read 50+ comments and only 4 of them mentioned that the FBI spent 32 man hours on this.  I want my money back.  I keep paying taxes - i.e. thier paychecks - and I get to find out that the FBI never had a copy of a sex video?!  What I'd rather find out is that there are no more terrorist trying to kill US citizens...
Has anyone even taken a minute to look at the pictures from his imdb? Doesn't anyone else notice that most of the pics are just him photoshopped into an existing celeb pic? In some cases the celeb has been cut-out and added to an existing pic of Morgan, such as the Elijah Wood (they are both looking at different focal points) and Mariah Carey  photos.(Notice how much brighter she appears than he, and in the crook of her right elbow, the material doesn't match that of his suit). If you are in the same room with the same light source as someone else in the pic, you will both have the same shadows and light glow on your face! One person will not appear dull and the other appear brighter. The only pic that I think is legit is the  Antonia Bennett pic, see how the glow from the background consistently envelopes all people in the pic? Another obvious fake is the Catherine Zeta Jones, Michael Douglas Morgan pic, I blew the pic up and examined it, there is not enough room behind Jones chair for a person and there seems to be extra material near his left arm that doesn't quite fit...just my opinion though...
The FBI should sue him for man hours wasted...
"This just in: Keya Morgan has brokered the sale of a secret, illicit, FBI tape of Keya Morgan to an unidentified fan of Keya Morgan who prefers not to be publicly identified as Keya Morgan."
I guess I'm just going to have spend the money to watch his documentary.
Just because Keya started collecting items when he was 14 - that doesnt mean that he doesnt have a legitimate business. Most collectors start young or take a hobby and then make it a business. I think this article is biased. I agree if he wanted to keep the seller and the buyers identity to himself than that is HIS right. He obviously does have a passion for this and that is why it is his livelihood.  I think that at the end of the day everything involving Marilyn was a mystery.
The suggestion that there might have been a sex film would require the presence of a separate camera person at the time of the sex event. That is so unlikely as to render the suggestion impossible.
Nice to see our tax dollars put to such important use.
Hey guys,
32 man hours for the FBI isn't all that bad, what if it were you? Wouldn't you like someone to disprove it's exsistance. They were tax payers.
Sleazey people do sleazy things I would like the FBI's help if I were in the same situation.....
I'd like to see a similarly pointed, skeptical investigative reporting effort launched on persons whose actions have profound impact on our lives for something which truly affects all of us directly or indirectly as individuals and a nation, e.g.: Cheney & his made-to-order, in-(White)House WMD "intelligence" and why he and others in his "Administration" have not been impeached for taking our country into a war of aggression for personal & political profit (repayment for his appointment to office), and why we can't prove that we have any right to call ourselves "America" until we restore the Constitutional rule of law to our highest governmental offices.
Well, suckers are still being born every minute, Mr. Morgan - um, I mean, Barnum, aren't they? But it seems much ado about something not very important, and about something that's not really anyone's business but MM's - However, who made the film, if it exists, and did MM know it had been made? That question might be interesting to answer.
At first I thought this all was a waste of time, 32 man hours? But after reading some replies about FBI "hiding evidence" and the "government conspiracy" to keep us in the dark, I think it was  necessary because some people in the voting public really do get fooled easily. Some here think that a claim, and proof of that claim's validity are mutually exclusive! What? So I can say anything I want and not have anything but my word to show for it? Then there are those that keep insisting that  the government is out to get us. Well just put on your tin foil hat and stock up on emergency rations! Wait how do you know that the rations don't have mind controlling drugs in them?
I will point out that Morgan's evidence for this film come from a publicly available FBI document! Its just that he claimed that there were things in there that no one else can seem to see! Instead of claiming a conspiracy why dont some people just read the originals that Morgan is using as his ONLY proof.
Evidently, the film exists...the only thing in question is whether or not the FBI ever had a copy.  Considering the trouble that the FBI has had keeping track of laptop computers with classified information, conveniently forgetting about a Marilyn Monroe film isn't impossible.
Does no one else see the flaw in "fbi.com" the gent cites?  How about "fbi.gov"?
Btw, the comment from "Sa Na" looks like a phony planted comment from Keya. Good investigative reporting for calling this douche bag on all his phony claims! Morgan knows what a lot of fakers know, that the illusion of success and celebrity can often lead to real celebrity and success (money), a self-fulfilling prophecy. Look how much publicity he has already garnered! Most of the imdb photos are so fake it's hilarious with different exposure levels for two people supposedly in the same pic. Some pics could be unannounced walk-ups. Most of them are all dated Feb 3 2008, yet they are from like 8 different locations, some east coast, some west, lol! What a waste of life!(and my time!)
Funny how no one has ever seen the video, but does if its authentic or not. I just read the GBI.gov website and it is VERY CLEAR that the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover knew about the tape in the 1960s' Also the fact that DiMaggio offered $25,000. back in 1965 for the tape.

Are we also calling DiMaggio crazy?

Ps-I have seen this Morgan guy in the past in several movies and commercials including Sea Of Love with Al Pacino, so I know it would be impossible for him to recreate a movies. Also, the dates on IMDB are when the photos were added, not when taken.
Keya kept information from NBC? The nerve! Next thing you know, politicians will start working both sides of the fence and the FBI will have trouble finding information it would rather not locate.
