Clintons' wealth skyrockets by 5,600 percent

Hillary and Bill Clintons' wealth has skyrocketed to more than $20 million last year, a staggering 5,600 percent increase since President Clinton left the White House, according to their newly released tax records.

In Clinton’s last full year in office, 2000, he and Mrs. Clinton earned $357,026. Last year, their estimated total income was $20.4 million. That is an increase of more than 5,600 percent.

Most of the Clintons’ newfound wealth comes from lucrative speeches and books. In the seven years since the Clintons left the White House, President Clinton has earned $51.8 million in speeches around the globe. The president’s book royalties total $29.5 million for that same period, and Senator Clinton’s book payments total $10.4 million, the Clinton campaign reported today.

It’s a remarkable turnaround for a couple that faced $12 million in legal fees when they left the White House, in the wake of the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals. Since that time, the new records show, the Clintons have raked in more than $109 million in total gross income--and made charitable contributions of more than $10 million.

Much of the Clintons’ earnings -- $15 million in total -- come from President Clinton’s partnership with his friend, supermarket magnate Ron Burkle, and his Yucaipa companies. Burkle and his firms invested heavily in Dubai, despite Hillary Clinton’s criticism of a deal to grant Dubai ownership of several prominent American ports. Tonight the Clinton campaign said: “As has been previously reported, President Clinton is a partner in the Yucaipa Global Partnership Fund, an international private equity investment fund investing in private international companies.  It seeks international investors and several of the companies in which it has invested are on Senator Clinton's financial disclosure forms that were filed in 2007.”

The Clinton campaign today also revealed that President Clinton earned a total of $2.9 million from a compensation agreement with InfoUSA, an Omaha-based data processing and marketing firm run by Vinod Gupta. The deal created controversy when it was reported that InfoUSA sold data lists to a third party that were used by fraudulent telemarketers.

Several of the older tax returns are signed and dated on the same day. For example, the Clintons’ 2004 and 2005 returns are both signed on October 14, 2007. Today, the campaign explained that several of the tax returns released today were amended, and thus were signed at later dates. Sen. Clinton’s staff blamed the couple’s tax preparers for making several errors.

A campaign spokesman said: “The Clintons amended their returns in 2003, 2004, and 2005. In 2003 the Clintons amended their return because they received a Form 1099-INT after the April 15, 2004 due date of their 2003 income tax returns. In 2004 the Clintons had to amend their filings twice.  The first amended return was based on an amended letter from the Blind Trust received after the original return was filed.  The second amended return was based on a clerical error that was discovered after the returns were filed.  There was a math error in the original return regarding deductions, and when a new tax preparer came on board, he discovered the error and amended the return to correct it.  In 2005 the Clintons had to amend their return because certain deductions were omitted from Schedule C because of a clerical error on the part of the Clintons' accountant.  When a new tax preparer came on board, he discovered the error and amended the return to correct it.”

NBC News showed the tax returns to Tom Ochsenschlager, the Vice President of Taxation at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He has been a CPA for three decades, and said all the amended returns and CPA errors stood out. “That’s unusual,” Ochsenschlager said.

In general, Ochsenschlager said the Clinton’s tax returns showed a “pretty conservative” approach. “I didn’t see anything that really raised my eyebrows,” he said. “They didn’t really take advantage of a lot of things they could have.”

One return that did catch Ochsenschlager’s eye was for the tax year 2003, when the Clintons took a hefty deduction for the business use of their home offices. President Clinton claimed $94,551 in expenses for cleaning and maintenance of his home office that year, and his wife claimed $52,889 for hers. The Clintons each got a tax deduction of about 10 percent of those amounts, Ochsenschlager said. “It seems very high. That’s one area where they may have been very aggressive,” the CPA added.

Who cares except for the the OBAMA network (MSNBC) and of course OBAMA!! They are the American Dream.  They started from scratch, did well, including serving our country and they deserve it!!  And I don't care about McCains or OB's finances either!!
So, what does a person's income have to do with
running for office?  Here we go again.  The media looks for another story for "spins". I think it is time for all the researchers/newspeople to deal with the real issues as to who is going to deliver on health care, the economy and Iraq?
Why cry foul and examine Clinton's as though they have done something wrong.  I guess Democrats should make no money.  Oprah made over $100M/yr and nobody questions her tax return.  Since you have the tax return does that make any difference other than Obama TV Network, which appears to be most of the cable news.  These guys in cable TV must have seen no blacks that can articulate like Obama.  Go to any south-central corner and you will see them hanging around the street every day.
The Clintons made more than Obama? That's just not right. My Obama would never ALLOW himself to make that much money. He just wouldn't! Because he's DIFFERENT.
I can't wait to see the accounting for Obama's campaign millions!
The Democrats are for the little guys, right? Wink. Wink.
http://Osispeaks.com
So after all of Obamas carrying on about Clintons releasing their tax returns and implying they were hiding something was just another one of his
games!
The taxes are out there for everyone to see and guess what--- There is nothing in them to raise any bodys eyebrows so what does BO want to complain about now????
I think BO&MO should release their tax records for the last 25 yrs!
Where are all BOs supporters who have done nothing but post that she is hiding her taxes and thats why she should not be elected read em & weep guys!!
Where are the 2007 returns?  What was the source of their 2007 income? Why was it not released? Who has tried to buy influence.  Don't be appeased by this flack, designed to hide the 2007 details.  Why isn't MSNBC asking?
Like 'em or not , they figured out how to DO what most people dream about: Get rich.
I have to say, and I am an Obama supporter, that I don't really see anything there that is too incriminating. The only reservation I have is about when the 15 and 2.9 million dollar returns he got from those investments occurred. Together, they are less than 20% of the total income of 109 million. As such, I'm not really worried about them. However, if they were accumulated over just the last couple of years, then they form a much larger percentage of Bill Clinton's income and I'd like to know if there was anything specific he did in return for that money which might be questionable.

I think it's relevant for the American public to find out if our ex-President is peddling his influence, because it makes one wonder if his wife will put their joint finances before the best interests of the American public should she gain the power of the White House.
Bill Clinton, Hilary Clinton, you are my heroes. I have read a lot of books about you, and Hilary, I think that you FULLY DESERVE to be president.
I care!!! Why do you think she waited so long to release this info. Above all she waited until the national attention was on Martin Luther King's death anniversary for goodness sakes. Something is definetely shady about her. She lies too. And Mishears too much for me!!
You should care, she is possibly (though not likely) the future president of the united states. It is highly suspicious that their 2004 and 2005 returns were amended last October (2007)when she was running for president. Not to mention that every year since 2002 they've had to amend their returns, either they are incapable of hiring competent accountants or they're up to something. Either way it doesn't show strong leadership, which is why I think they've delayed releasing the information for so long. If dirty politics that leads to the presidency and then to lucrative contracts with corporations that make shady deals is the "American Dream", count me out.
This story is very misleading; it's not at all fair to compare the Clintons' net worth NOW with their last salary based income when Clinton was in office.
Andrea you are becoming old, repetitive and out of touch...very sad!
Wow, so she spends hundreds of thousands of dollars of her blue-collar worker donor money on luxury hotels and party platters for her crew, and sits on $100 million.  That's just...priceless.
Yeah - a real champion for the blue collar worker - she is so full of it
If there is a needle of an error whether real or imagined in this tax return hay stack, I'm sure that the "Chris Matthews/Keith Oberman, Obama for President" campaign team will find it. What a waste of time!!
I have a question. Who is raking in the dough for hammering the Clintons. This type of negative reporting and worseis the reason I turned off MSNBC and other of my once favorite places to get political information. In regards to the extremely brilliant and patriotic couple, lay off.Oh yes, to bad that would reduce their raking in the dough.
I wonder if any of those persons that contributed to their legal fees got any return on their money.  Their office expenses looked very, very high.  I wouldn't mind cleaning an office if I got paid like that.
I'm not a Clinton (family) fan, but these two have every right to every penny they made. I don't see a problem here. Why isn't the 'class issue' just as bad a thing to lean on as 'the race issue?' Give it up, these people made money, and they deserve it. Good for you Clinton family. (Now if they'd only encourage their fellows in the legislature to lighten the income tax a bit, I think we might get along. Fat chance of that happening.)
"...a deal to grant Dubai ownership of several prominent American ports."?!?

WAKE UP AMERICA!!
Interesting.  Lots of amendments....umm, something sounds fishy.  Is the campaign saying Hillary and Bill cannot even hire a good accountant?  Umm, TWO new accountants at different times found the supposed "errors" from the accountants before??  Like I said, looks mighty fishy.  It sure took them a LOOONNNNGGGGG time to get those tax papers out....

CUT & PASTE???
It goes to show you how 2-faced the democratic party can be.  They criticize the rich for the very same thing they do.  As a conservative Republican I find nothing wrong with using your abilities to make money.  The Clinton's did and so do many other Americans.  However to suggest that the wealthy should be punished (greater tax burden) is insane.  All we do is reside in the Caribbean in some tax haven island and bingo...no taxes.  I wouldn't mind keeping my residence in the US, provided I didn't get taxed at 39%.  Try writing a check for many hundreds of thousands sometime and see how it feels.
I would like to know how much money Bill Clinton put up to earn a share of the investment group when owing 12 million for legal fees.  Electing Hillary will only make Bill's influence peddling price go up, further enhancing their bank accounts.  Once Hillary leaves office, there will be no limit to what the pair can make assuming they don't finally divorce.
I would like to know if any of the money can be traced back to the people involved in the circus of pardons Bill ring mastered in his last two days in office.
I don't care about her money, I care about her lying:  Dodging snipers, give me a break.  She will be swift boated if she steals the nomination.  Exaggerating military experience is why Kerry lost it will be the the same with Hillary.
It takes a village to clean their office space. 94K can get a lot of O'l fashioned's - ala spitzer. She is a caught red handed liar with pants O'fire. Without the video tape she would still be peddling falsehoods about her trips abroad with that evil grimace....
Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, move over!  Once both Clinton's are out of presidential office and cash in on their political strokes and influence, there will be a new king and queen of the heap!
While this might seem like a big increase, good for them.  This is a meager attempt at generating news out of nothing.
One should care to see how they got their money. Of course, there are some questionable areas.  Why else  wait this long and still refuse to release details of 2007.

Of course, some people feel Obama must be vetted to the nth degree and look the other way for those they  like.  Hmmmmmmm?

Lastly, the Obama network is msnbc.  Don't tell that the the resident conservatives.  I guess I should only look at the Fox network.  Yeah, they're really unbias.
Who Cares?

I suspect that all those ordinary folk who've made contributions to her campaign will care (and stop giving).

Who Cares?

I suspect that all those Blue Collar workers are going to re-think just why this super-rich woman is supposed to understand and/or care about them.

Who Cares?

I guess, Hillary cared, or she wouldn't have hidden this info for so long.
I care.  It just goes to show how disconnected Hillary is from real life.  It's talk about the "rich" not being taxed enough when you're making $5, 10, 15, or $20 million a year because if your tax rate goes by 105 you still aren't impacted.

Plus for eight years, she lived like royalty...so please Hilary, quit trying to tell me you understand about working class Americans or even those American families who bust thier humps to have household incomes of $250k a year.
If serving your country means incidents like White Water and the Lewinsky affair, then, yes, I would call that dreaming, dreaming on our account, dreaming that this couple is innocent.

The majority voter never really cares about such measures, anyway. They are more interested in Disneyland than of the truth in politics.
This is what your big "Investigative Unit" comes up with? This is DEEP BACKROUND? I am soooo impressed. I don't see where you gave FOIA credit for all this public knowledge.
Not bad for someone to make 50 million dollars making speeches and then turns around and criticizes Obama for giving good speeches. Do you think that it was coincidence that the returns were release today. Friday..... Martin Luther King Holiday. Maybe the Clintons thought no one would notice. It will be interesting to see what happens when Hillary has to talk to those poor suckers who are making 30 thousand a year.
Just another working family
The Clintons have given so much to this country--who cares about these tax returns? No smoking gun in them as the Obama campaign was obviously hoping for. They paid their taxes, didn't take outrageous deductions, and gave quite a bit to charity. Obama's tax returns showed them giving from 1/2 of 1% up to 3% to charities.
diversion from the real policies that Bill Clinton implemented. NAFTA, Deregulation of financial markets, Slashing interest rates to historical lows triggering the crash of 2000 and housing crisis of 2008, refusing to resolving and closing the Iraq WMD dossier, Murderous Iraq sanctions, Illegal bombing of Yugoslavia, Ruinous drug policies, Dismantling welfare and social safety nets, Bombing of a Somalian Pharmaceutical factory that was the only source of Malaria treatment and it goes on and on.
This report was definitely written by MSNBC reporters who, I can tell, did quite a bit of dirt digging hoping to turn up some "sins" to pin on the Clintons yet again. They used words like "raked in" to give the shady connotation that the Clintons earned their income in large quantities with relatively little effort from Ron Burkle or the infoUSA source ... Well,
What I got from this report was that the Clintons, through their hard & solid work in the past 7 years, via making speeches and writing books, earned $92 millions and another $18M working with financial partners, which represent less than 20% of the total.  They then contributed almost 10% or $10M to charities.
and that's TEN MILLION US DOLLARS AND NOT JAPANESE YENS !!!  Comeon ! when are the low life MSNBC pundits ever going to start doing some honest professional reporting? Don't they have any conscience?  No wonder they can't "rake in" better ratings ... and NBC network's still stuck @ being # 4 !!!
Obviously they made a lot of money after leaving the White House. There are rules about making money off of anything while president. A very popular presidency, they sold a lot of books and made money off of speeches because they are very smart and people want to know their opinion. They had a lot of home office expenses the year before they started their Presidential Bid? Umm, yeah. Obviously doing something like that is going to take an investment in office supplies, mailing out thousands of letters and whatnot? Did you know that paper and ink cartidges are really expensive?
The news media is PATHETIC.

Nit-picking the Clinton tax return while a fog hangs over Obama.

Your headline "Deep Background" is a joke. You will not report on anything you have to "dig' to find out.
This column's author should check her dictionary and learn the difference between wealth (money you have at point in time) and income (money you earn over a certain period of time). As written, the article is confusing, to say the least.
Geez, I wonder how many of us "regular folk" could get away with a home office deduction of $147,000?  Must be nice.  Hell, maybe I'll see if I can get a job as  secretary/domestic help for the Clintons.  And with that kind of money, makes you wonder why HRC can't pay the health insurance premiums for her staff on time.
so what?
Heathens!  Charlatans!  Worshippers of mammon!
And think of those stupid idiots who contributed to the Clinton defense fund when all the vultures were after Bill - HA!
And this headline is meant to do WHAT?
Deceive?  This is NBC's  aim, isn't it.  Pity.

Go Hillary!   Half the Dems LOVE you!!!!
In ADDITION to those voters who do not count, ie., Fla/Michigan.
AND those who have yet to vote.
Good For Them! All the crap that the Republican controlled Congress put them through, "for nothing," I might add! Whitewater - nothing... Blue Dress - Who cares! The GOP tried to crucify the Clinton's!

Would anyone like to know why?

BECAUSE THEY WERE DEFENDING THE INTERESTS OF THE AVERAGE AMERICAN... PEOPLE THAT HAD NO VOICE ... CHILDREN THAT HAD NO FUTURES, AFRICAN-AMERICANS THAT COULDN'T FIND WORK DUE TO DISCRIMINATION.

That's Why!

Let me tell all of you a secret. Dick Cheney had a net worth of approx. $3.1 million before he stepped into the Vice Presidency... He's worth a whopping $170 Million and he's still shaking down every nickel while in office.

So, as far as the Clinton's making money ... SCREW YOU CHENEY AND THE HORSE YOU RODE IN ON!
Hey, this article is just about info, not accusing anyone of anything. "Me think thou doth protest too much!"

But seriously, I get that you don't like MSNBC's Obama-infatuation, but keep in mind that doesn't mean that he's not a great candidate. Similarly, just because much of the media are unkind to Hillary doesn't she doesn't have those flaws. In short, it's possible for the media to be both biased and correct.
