NBC News Exclusive: Political ties to a secretive religious group

For more than 50 years, the National Prayer Breakfast has been a Washington institution. Every president has attended the breakfast since Eisenhower, elbow-to-elbow with Democrats and Republicans alike. “I am really proud to carry on that tradition,” President Bush said at this year’s breakfast. “The people in this room come from many different walks of faith. Yet we share one clear conviction: We believe that the Almighty hears our prayers -- and answers those who seek Him.”

Besides the presidents and first ladies--Bill and Hillary Clinton attended in 1997--the one constant presence at the National Prayer Breakfast has been Douglas Coe. Although he’s not an ordained minister, the 79-year-old Coe is the most important religious leader you've never seen or heard.

But Doug Coe is well known to scores of senators in both parties--and many faiths--including Sam Brownback, Mike Enzi, Mark Pryor and Bill Nelson. They go to small weekly Senate prayer groups that Coe attends. Participants tell NBC News that so have senators John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, which those campaigns confirm.

Senator Clinton’s participation is surprising to observers who have investigated Coe’s group, called The Fellowship Foundation, which critics have described as a secretive organization populated mostly by conservative Republicans. “I think in part through her involvement with the Fellowship’s prayer group she was able to meet with some of these Republican senators and get to know them on a one-on-one basis,” said Joshua Green, a Senior Editor at The Atlantic magazine.

In her autobiography, “Living History,” Senator Clinton describes Coe as "a genuinely loving spiritual mentor and guide to anyone, regardless of party or faith, who wants to deepen his or her relationship with God.” She writes that “Doug became a source of strength and friendship" during her often-troubled White House years.

Their relationship began in February 1993 with a prayer lunch at The Cedars, the Fellowship’s Virginia estate on the Potomac River. NBC News reviewed the First Lady’s official daily calendar, recently made public by the National Archives, and found other gatherings including a “Private Meeting” with Coe in her West Wing office on December 19, 1997, and a “Meet & Greet with Business Leaders” on Feb. 4, 1998. “Doug Coe introduces business leaders to the First Lady,” the calendar states.

So who is Doug Coe? He shuns almost all interview requests, including ours. But in hours of audiotape and videotape recordings obtained exclusively by NBC News, he frequently preaches the gospel of Jesus to followers and supporters. In one videotaped sermon from 1989, Coe provides this account of the atrocities committed under Chairman Mao in Communist China: "I've seen pictures of the young men in the Red Guard…they would bring in this young man’s mother…he would take an axe and cut her head off. They have to put the purposes of the Red Guard ahead of father, mother, brother sister and their own life. That was a covenant, a pledge. That's what Jesus said."

In his preaching, Coe repeatedly urges a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. It’s a commitment Coe compares to the blind devotion that Adolph Hitler demanded from his followers -- a rhetorical technique that now is drawing sharp criticism.

"Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler were three men. Think of the immense power these three men had, these nobodies from nowhere,” Coe said.

Later in the sermon, Coe said: "Jesus said, ‘You have to put me before other people. And you have to put me before yourself.' Hitler, that was the demand to be in the Nazi party. You have to put the Nazi party and its objectives ahead of your own life and ahead of other people."

Coe also quoted Jesus and said: “One of the things [Jesus] said is 'If any man comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, brother, sister, his own life, he can't be a disciple.’ So I don't care what other qualifications you have, if you don't do that you can't be a disciple of Christ."

The sermons are little surprise to writer Jeff Sharlet. He lived among Coe's followers six years ago, and came out troubled by their secrecy and rhetoric.

“We were being taught the leadership lessons of Hitler, Lenin and Mao. And I would say, ‘Isn’t there a problem with that?’ And they seemed perplexed by the question. Hitler’s genocide wasn’t really an issue for them. It was the strength that he emulated,” said Sharlet, who is a Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone and is an Associate Research Scholar at the NYU Center for Religion and Media in New York.

Sharlet has now written about The Fellowship, also known to insiders as The Family, in a soon-to-be published book called “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power.”

“They’re notoriously secretive,” Sharlet said. “In fact, they jokingly call themselves the Christian Mafia. Which becomes less of a joke when you realize that they really are dedicated to being what they call an invisible organization.”

Federal tax records for Coe's non-profit group shows it funds charitable programs around the world -- but that it is also a family business.

The 990 tax forms for 2005, the last tax year available, show that both of Coe’s sons were on the payroll, at $110,000 a year each.  The organization also paid his wife, his daughter and his daughters-in-law.

So how do Coe's admirers explain his unusual sermons? David Kuo, a former Bush Administration aide and religious-outreach official at the White House, says The Fellowship is a peaceful, faith-based group that does good works internationally. Kuo says Doug Coe wasn’t lauding Hitler's actions.

“What Doug is saying, it’s a metaphor. He is using Hitler as a metaphor. Jesus used that,” Kuo said. A metaphor for what? “Commitment,” Kuo answered.

Asked about Coe’s influence on Hillary Clinton, people close to her told NBC News that she does not consider him one of her leading spiritual advisors. They added that Senator Clinton has never contributed to Coe’s group, is not a member of The Fellowship and has never heard the sermons obtained by NBC News. And, they said, Doug Coe is not Hillary Clinton’s minister.

Coe declined repeated requests for an interview. But a close friend told NBC News that Doug Coe invokes Hitler only to show the power of small groups -- for good and bad. And, the friend said, Coe spends “99 percent” of his time during the sermons talking about the leadership model set by Jesus Christ.

Supporters also point to Coe’s charitable works around the world. Still, critics question his influence -- and secrecy -- in a year when the candidates' religious beliefs are part of the political debate.

Comments

The article says: "They go to small weekly Senate prayer groups that Coe attends. Participants tell NBC News that so have senators John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, which those campaigns confirm."
Why then is the article focusing on Hillary Clinton? What is the point the authors want to make?
I have a big favor to ask them: could you PLEASE stop behaving as tabloid "reporters" and start focusing on the issues that REALLY MATTER?
What a load of hooey!
Once again the cults are revealed.  Doesn't it bother anyone else that most of our national leaders do one of two terrible things: 1) Believe that talking to an invisible man will cause things to happen in the real world; or 2) are willing to pander to those who believe the same thing even when they don't themselves.  This is really scary.
Coe sounds like someone who has spent years leveraging his connections into more connections--a wanna-be power broker, as evidenced by the subject matter of his sermons.  How he uses his power, for what purposes, to what ends, is the larger question.

In any case, it doesn't sound like Hillary is part of his "chosen group" or whatever.  He probably represents one of many constituencies and interest groups, however weird or spooky, that politicians have to be familiar with and benignly disposed towards.

The Clintons' pastor from Arkansas was my pastor later here in TX (it's in my blog), and his preaching is fairly non-controversial (though he does favor the ordination of women, rare in Southern Baptists).  Whether your pastor is from First Baptist or First Methodist, odds are he or she is going to be mainstream enough.
Send the reporter back to school. What is most disturbing is the number of people who have commented that they are "frightened" by people who like to pray together. This is probably one of the least evil of all events that happen in Washington DC. I wish Teddy, Chuck and John would show up there once in a while.  … I'm "appalled".
Why do humans, even ones whom one would think would know better, so adamantly need to attribute their/our existence to supernatural beings?  Where was god in the universe when the big bang went off?  Is heaven a different universe?  Isn't religion just the political power manifestation of mans inability to explain the universe?
I APPLAUD THIS ARTICLE BECAUSE THE MEDIA WAS ALL TOO READY TO BASH OBAMA FOR HIS ASSOCIATION WITH REVEREND WRIGHT AND HERE YOU HAVE NOT ONE, BUT MANY POLITICIANS ALIGNING THEMSELVES WITH THIS MAN!NO WONDER AMERICA IS IN SUCH DISARRAY! PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES(MEDIA, CLINTONIANS, REPUBLICANS)SHOULDN'T THROW STONES, PALIN AND SIMPLE!!!
I was disappointed that NBC did not dig deeper into the story and reveal that Doug Coe and President Bush are cousins.  A member of one of the world's most powerful families, he is also a third cousin of former UK Primer Minster Sir Winston Church and a cousin of Country Music legend David Allan Coe.

I loved the piece, however. It's about time someone pulled back the wraps to reveal the wizard behind the curtain.  The American Ayatollahs and their ilk are a greater threat to America and our way of life than Bin Laden and his friends will ever be.

our nations political structure, especially the Republican party of which I am a member, has truly been hijacked by the religous right. Maybe thats why mcCain is doing so well.
HOW CAN IT BE A SECRETIVE RELIGION IF SO MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT, AND I FOR ONE WOULD RATHER HAVE OUR POLITICANS PRAY ABOUT THEIR VOTES THE TO JUST VOTE ANY WHICH WAY, SO WAY IF MS. CLINTON ASK THIS MR. COLE FOR SPIRITUAL ADVICE, SHE PROBABLY NEEDED IT MORE THEN ANYONE AT THAT TIME, SO STOP MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLE HILL, LEARN TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS JESUS LOVED YOU
I can only hope that the main stream media pays as much attention to this as the did with the Rev. Wright.  Can we see Coe and Sen. Clinton on a 24 hour loop too?  Or is this topic just a little to close to home?

Thank you Andrea and MSNBC for bringing out a story that many in the internet world have known about for weeks.
I agree, the media is grabbing at straws trying t find a story--pretty sorry job of reporting,HUH???
As long as there are people there will be corruption, sycophants, zealots and psychopaths.  Nazi Germany was a good example of citizens turning there eyes away from what their government was doing because things were going well for them.  Suddenly a large portion of the population is gone and here are there houses and possessions for sale at low prices! Ignore the ashes.  I agree, what brains cells were popping in his brain when he compared Jesus to Hitler, why not mention Gandhi . . . commitment? Complacency.  I mean I would try and make a difference but well, I'm gonna go take a nap.
Since the prayer breakfast is inclusive of many religious beliefs, participating doesn't seem to indicate any affinity with other participant's ideas. This seems to be "reaching" much too hard for a serious connection among these people.
      "yawning in SC"
so let's see...Hillary begs for the endorsement from right winger Richard Mellon Scaife...any connection to this group?
I have questions concerning the National Prayer Breakfast Meeting (NBPM).
Does the Foundation receive any government funding to support the NBPM.
Do government employees attend the NBPM while on duty?
Do they receive any per diem or other compensation for attending the NBPM?
Are tickets necessary to attend the NBPM?
If so, does the government buy any?
Do government employees use alternate work schedules or flex time to incorporate attendance at NBPM meetings into compensable work schedules?
Wouldn’t most people attending rather be somewhere else?

Some questions on the weekly senate prayer meetings include:
Are these regularly scheduled meetings held on government property?
If the above is true, is the government compensated?
Are the senators on the payroll when they attend these meetings?
At least some senators would rather be somewhere else I am sure.
A total Clinton hit job. Very disappointing so-called reporting. Whoever brought this story to NBC should be fired as well as those who approved it. If I were Brian Williams, I would be embarrassed to be a part of such stories. There was no substance to this "news" item, no real tie to Hillary other than whatever inuendo one might care to make of it. NBC News should be ashamed of their attempt to dump on the Clintons.
This story is what ought to be used with the Hitler/Mao analogy--trying to strongly influence who the demo candidate will be in Nov. I find it difficult to believe that NBC News thinks we all are that stupid. Time to try ABC or CBS for awhile.
Let's get it right folks It's CHURCH then State thats why america is in a state it is in you ought to have your country organized by those who are compassionate about all people of all faiths so America keep GOD in your life GOD shed HIS Grace on Thee America
As a writer and a former teacher of writing, both for many years, I'm rather surprised that Coe would use such metaphors, especially if he does so as frequently as the article implies.  To use such a metaphor once in a great while where the calculation is to derive some shock value from its use is one thing; routinely working it into speeches and sermons is at least debatable.

As for this article itself, a number of other folks responding here have rightly pointed out it is highly biased, in more ways than one.  It does imply there's something inherently wrong with Christianity -- and while maybe there is, NBC isn't the provider of judges of value, something reporters sometimes forget they most assuredly are not.  Even if I privately share their suspicion (and I'm not saying one way or the other, since my thoughts on that are completely beside the point), I still would have sent this story back had I been the editor.  (Which, by the way, means the editor has to get stuck with some of the responsibility.)

Get out of attack mode.
Anyone who puts God before the needs and happiness of his fellow man is ripe for being recruited by someone or some organization who say they know what God wants. These recruits often become a principle source of pain and suffering for others by turning a blind and destructive eye towards humanity.  No doubt you've heard of Charles Manson and friends, The Crusades, Jim Jones and grape Kool-Aid, suicide bombers and the Taliban.
May I always be an agnostic that loves life and people.  I don't want God to save me; I want to be saved from God.
I agree that Religious interpretation or personal beliefs should not be given as absolute unquestionable drivers for goverment, national and international policies. But it is a fact of life that while the adminstration of a nation is supposed to be secular, abolutely no-one is personally secular, it is not possible. Everyone need soemthing to believe in, even if it's aethiesm.

Most if not all Religion, or 'reli - on' as I sometimes call it has something good to offer our leaderships, justice, and people in general, they all have 'good advice' and guidence to promote, it's just that every once in a while some one insists on declaringthat their way is the only 'right' way, and surprisingly this insistance seems to come from followers of the three primary theocracies.

But if anyone researches the unspoken masses of these self same theocracies you will find taht many who wlk the mid-path, live their lives in what most of society can only call decency, honor, respect, kindness, justice, integrity, and warmth. These are common traits vested in most human beings... irrespective of heritage, education, or path taken.

Religion is not a good or bad thing, it is what is done supposedly under its banner that matters. Just as with democracy. Just look at Turkey, a supposed secular democratic state had outlawed the headscarf for University attendees.

I was of the understanding that, democracy and secularism was about neutralising leans towards personal beliefs that might force one persons interpretations on others.

But lets be honest, helping your kith and kin is a natural instinct. The question is to what extent and how Just is the help and support.

The fact that 'people' get together and pray is good, it is when you find out that money is involved, nepotism and secracy that it gets murky.

It is time that people really tried to understand what secularism, democracy, equality and integrity are all about.

This non-article was obviously written to try and generate some kind of fire under Hillary of the type Obama has recently endured.  Flawed logic and a cheap shot.  You can't be serious.  For those who use "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" as an excuse to justify your hate of religion, well you have other issues that you are hiding behind your malice.  To suggest that it is somehow illegal for the inhabitants of the White House to exercise freedom of religion is really the height of ignorance and shows a complete lack of logic.  You want the power to control others actions and justify your desire to do so by claiming to defend freedom.  What a hoot.
It warms my heart after all the negative news we hear out of Washington that there is someone preaching the love of truth and honor and dedication to our savior(Jesus Christ) and wouldn't you know there are also the Pharisees
sanding in judgment who won't do right and abuse all who will
Great story!! It's particularly relevant given the enormous, guilt-by-association media brouhaha about Barack Obama's pastor. Let's see if anyone has the guts to suggest that the Reverend Wright's inflammatory assertions were merely a "metaphor." And what about that "strength" that Hillary Clinton says the Hitler-admiring, spiritual "mentor," Douglas Coe, provided for the Clintons in their hour(s) of need?? Hitler was also a spiritual mentor to many Germans in their darkest days in the Depression.
I agree with cmore 100%.  I don't think it matters to a lot of the media all the good things Hillary and Bill Clinton did while he was in office. Its like you are on a witch hunt. You mentioned Barack Obama went there as well. Why isn't he being looked at closer?  Your news and CNN news makes me glad there is FOXNEWS out there if you want to get the good and bad on ALL candidates, not just the bad on the ones the news stations don't want in the White House. Many of you seem to be pushing for Obama for president but I still don't know of anything much he has did. I never even heard about him til he became a presidential candidate.
Hey Peg in Chicago- Obama and John McCain  will have to be on that around the  clock loop, too! I've known about the prayer breakfast for a long time {years}. Rev. Wright has damed America and blames the white man for the black mans woes. Now the Africa-Americans that I work with are saying this kind of talk{Rev. Wright's} goes on in church every Sunday. Bunk, I don't believe these people would sat there and let there children be subjected to this sort of language. Now all the Obama supporters are saying it's really not all that bad. His supporters were probably as surprized as the rest of us. Obama has got a free ride and the Media is high-jacking our election. Hardball, Keith Olberman, Cnn News, Msnbc, Fox, and the like, have all bash or given way to weight to a now story, This Prayer Breakfast  non story is a perfect example. I have almost stopped watching them. Morning Joe seams to be a little more balanced but even he has a lot of Obama supporters as guest { so maybe even he's an act}. Let all the states finish voting and let the chips fall where they may. The popular vote is the most important part of all this, because it reflects the peoples  decision .This delegate and super delegate stuff is the pitts, and should be done away with.
You have to put me before other people. And you have to put me before yourself.' Hitler, that was the demand to be in the Nazi party. You have to put the Nazi party and its objectives ahead of your own life and ahead of other people."

Let's see. Last I knew isn't EVERY soldier in our military taught this?  That a soldier is to put his country's benefit before himself? That he gives up his life to follow an order even if he doesn't want to.???????????????
I see nothing wrong with the logic, its the CAUSE that makes the logic either right or wrong.

Furthermore, Hitler KILLED many innocent people. I fail to read in the Bible where Jesus killed anyone.  He healed people.

Besides all of this, what on EARTH does it have to do with anything election related at all.  ?  He isn't Hilary's pastor?

Also, I have heard, do not know if it is true? that Obama attends an all black church that basically does not welcome whites?
If we all believed and acted the same, the world would be pretty boring!

That isn't true.
IF everyone followed the Ten Commandments the world would be safe and prosperous. Think of it.
There would be no more lying, stealing, cheating, having sex with your neighbor and his dog or his daughter, Their wouldn't be people ruining their health and letting their kids go hungry because they were smoking, drunk, or high on drugs.  We wouldn't have to worry about school shootings because there wouldn't be murder or torture, or rape or kidnapping.  I wouldn't have to cover my kids ears when the neighbors yell cursings at each other.  I fail to see why that is so horrible and wrong to be teaching our kids. ?
Thank you NBC for reporting this story, this story has been floating around the web for a while even before the rev wright story. first off to the Hillary supporters, sen clinton is an actual member of the bible study group that is a branch of Coes group and she has been involved with these people well over 15 years and almost all of them are very conservative republicans. for anybody to defend doug coe is crazy because this man first off is not even a minister what makes him qualified to be preaching about jesus? doug coe preaches about biblical capitalism, military power ,globalization, his group has a history of supporting, right-wing dictators for decades and I believe they are source to the neocon and fascist policies that have put this country in the direction that that rich get rich, and poor get poorer. Also this story explains why sen. clinton voted for the war and crossed party lines to vote or cosponsor bills with neocons like santorom, the
fellowship believes that the elite matters and that god chose them to rule the mass societies of the world and they believe in american dominance.
So if people think Hillary clinton goin to bring the troops home, dont get your hopes up,the fact that she involved this group guarantees that all but maybe one or two thousands american troops will be ramaining in Iraq with years come. Oh ALSO, guess who donated 1.5 million to the fellowship that was used to build a mansion for them ? THE CEO OF RAYTHEON,THAT COMPANY IS A DEFENSE CONTRACTOR THAT IS CURRENTLY WORKING IN IRAQ,YEP THE FELLOWSHIP HAS CEO'S AS MEMBERS ALONG WITH THE POLITICIANS. FASCISM HAS INVADED CAPITOL HILL AND HILLARY IS KNEE DEEP IN IT, SHE WILL NOT BRING THE TROOPS HOME!
It's all about JFK's "Gnomes of Zurich" our politicians are ALL beholden to one group or another - any time a politician takes money he/she is prostituting their beliefs (if they have any) - does noone see how ridiculous a system is when politicians are bought due to the neccesity of fundraising - why not have a system where they are NOT allowed to take private money and have an equal opportunity to broadcast their message via all media - this system is insane and nothing will change in our lifetimes - Unfortunately.
Ironically, Hitler considered himself to be a devout Christian who felt he was doing "God's work", that he was destined to complete what Jesus left unfinished - the destruction of the "evil Jewish race".

Now I can't read Mr. Coe's mind, I'm not sure if he merely chooses bad examples, or if he is a crypto-fascist that really does admire powerful figures like Hitler and Stalin. But I do find that demanding so much devotion as to favor the church over family and self, demanding a willingness to give all, to be horribly cultish and reason for serious concern
I find it bizzare on this, the fortieth anniversary of the martyrdom of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., to hear so many strident voices calling for the complete seperation of religion and politics.
OK, PAY Attention.  Seek the truth.  You are either a follower of Peace and Harmony, OR you are a follower of Hatred and War.  Who are these people, 'the family'? (you can figure it out, you're not stupid)  Who were MLK and Ghandi?  Who were Hitler and...  Why is this organization (the family) secret, if it does good things?  Can you say "illuminati"?  How about the 'new nazis'?  They are all the same if they are willing to sacrifice even one life in the name of their own power mongering agenda.  And everyone seems to put so many words in the mouth of a guy who lived and died over 2000 years ago (Jesus?).  Let's ride that bandwagon and make it fit our own power agenda.  HUMANS, you are not worth the word.  GROW UP and get out of that self-centered viewpoint that destroys the world.  There truly is only ONE way, and it's not the way of 'the family', or any other religion.  Religion is the most destructive force that humans have ever invented. (yes, humans invented religion for holding power over other humans).  Don't take my word for it (I don't want you to give me your power), just WAKE UP.
Lets all try to create life, not death.  Let's get away from the self-centered, childish viewpoints that start wars over greed and control issues, which come from a rudimentary fear of nothing more than an illusion created by "different beliefs" (primarily different religions).  Would you run a business like the way we are "running" the world, where everyone would certainly cut the throats of everyone else for their own gain?  It's bound to lose.
It is eye opening and very alarming to read all of the previously posted comments. The teaching of Jesus and Hitler cannot even be remotely compared. Show me where it says in the Bible that Jesus promoted the destruction of a society based on appearance. Jesus promoted peace even when being attacked and killed.

If Coe really does promote the Hitler beliefs then it is concerning. If his organization is legitimate, then why all of the secrets surrounding it? Personally, the media is so biased and corrupted that I do not trust much of what is put out there. The wonderful thing about the United States is that we have freedom of religion. You do not have to believe the way that I do, but you also do not have the ability to persecute me for it (at least at this point).
what you fail to realize is there are many religions in the world but only one that offers a relationship. a relationship with Jesus Christ brings salvation. salvation is what Christ paid for on the cross for every nation and every tongue it is a gift from God for all those who believe in Jesus Christ.if you have a relationship with Jesus Christ you don't turn it off to become politically correct, this relationship is not what you do it is who you are, as a representive of Christ's love for humanity.religion kills it demands we do something to be justified where as Jesus saves all we need to do is receive his love, his gifts and his grace. man is always learning but never coming to the knowledge of truth. 2 Timothy:3,7
NBC, it is crystal clear that you all are with Obama's band wagon...what a shame...pathetic.
People have all kinds of unusual beliefs and I believe that people should have freedom afforded to them. I am sure that there is always danger from the
fringe groups. I do not even believe in all the things I used to 20 some odd years ago. I would hope that the group helps people and tries to leave behind a better world behind.
Show me Jesus - in the meantime God, the Easter Bunny and Santa can wait in line...right behind Jesus, its cool. Do i have a problem with a canidate who belives in something he/she cant prove exists? or has no way to prove exisits? yup, yup, yes sir....got me on that 1; in the meantime I see democrocy taking a hit around these parts when a leader goes to brunch with God...I called on God...he said to write a nasty comment on this site.
At last there is a person in the USA who stands up for the Gospel of Christ. I dont see anything wrong is using metaphors from daily life (or the past) to get your message through. I have not heard of Doug Coe before reading this article, but being from the Middle East, surrounded by calls to Islam right left and center, why cant we Christians do the same!
Keep up the good work!
That is some scarry stuff. Vote for Obama.  He is has been very candid with us about his faith.  How can someone bring us together as a team if they think that they are above the rest of us, or entitled to something that only the people have the right to give?  By the way, I like John McCain, although he is republican, and does not hold his integrity all the time on certain issues, I think he would make a good president as well (but Obama is the real deal, he has the charisma and strength of character to put our country back together, not to mention the world would look at us differently immediately)
The Fellowship is a fine group.  Doug Coe and his staff doe a good job.  Individual spiritual growth should be promoted and does assist those in demanding positions.  There is nothing sinister or uncaring about those prayer breakfasts or lunches.  They're positive.  And blessings to many people.
Several of you apparently forget that the president and family live in the White HOUSE; in other words, this is a residence, so what's wrong with Hillary having a visitor in her home? Your shut-in neighbor can have a priest come to their home for mass, but Hillary can't have a religious leader to the House for a discussion?  Just because someone attends a Prayer Breakfast and has a religious leader to the White House doesn't mean church will have any influence over state.  Too many people quote separation of church and state without understanding the real meaning behind the phrase.  When this phrase was written, it simply meant that this country would not have an official religion, like our enemy at the time, England (ever heard of the Church of England?  If you were an English subject, you HAD to be a member of their church!!).  The real issue here is that this article was poorly researched and written. Many religious statements are taken out of context, simply because the so-called researcher neglected to do the work necessary to find the meaning behind the statement. Religious beliefs can't be summed up in handy soundbites.
Lets start with...To the flag and the United States of America...  UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.. Certainly there are traditions.... Certainly leaders must worship... And how hard is it to worship when everyone wants to get to you to talk? I thank God everyday for freedom and gifts he has given me.. Much less the leaders of our country needing somewhere to go.. to thank god they survived another week.. Perhaps helped a few people... Searching for guidance... It certainly doesnt come from man... It must come from above....Life, Liberty , and the pursuit of happiness....  Out country was founded on religious freedom... and ownership of property..

Imagine...No freedom of religion.. No ownership of Property as well....Critics of all who lead the nation... How weak is this?.. What kind of weakness are showing the world.. We need to be united and strong as a nation.... One People.
And yes Our Nation was founded by Christians..
Certainly all have been welcomed... Remember freedoms ...Religion, Speech, Pursue Happiness.. When we are told , what to do it is not longer a Democracy... Everyone has these rights.. Even are Politicians...We only have the right to decide whether to vote for them or not...

I will not give up my right to worship the Lord Jesus Christ....and to speak freely.. Nor will I ask others to do the same..

The old saying..Tune In, Turn Off, Drop Out can also mean if you dont like the country... There is a Door... Im proud to be an American..A Citizen of The United States.. My country .. Right or Wrong.. AND sometimes I blush.. But must always stand up with hand over my heart when they play the anthem...

People with religious views are people who cannot tell the difference between concepts and reality.  In my view they should not be in office.
The ir-religious right has an agenda that is very un-American, not to mention dangerous to any people loving liberty and freedom.  Democracy would be quickly tossed aside were this small group to gain complete control.
These guys make $100,000 and are suspect. Hillary and bill make $109 MILLION and they are okay. Sheesh
What a misguided witch-hunt and book promo event this article appears to be.  Is this an MSNBC docu-drama a la Clooney or Moore?  Arguing against the merits of Mitchell & Popkin's political schtick would be giving it credit it does not deserve.  How many tedious hours did the 5-person editorial support team spend to make this story less desperate for meaning and slightly more believable than "National Treasure?"  Truly a "Rolling Stone" piece of...um...journalism.
This article was a sneaky, almost slimey attempt to get us all thinking Hillary is into some secretive organization.  Blah, blah, BLAH.  I am voting for McCain but I know an attempt to cast doubts, and this it is!
Enough already! This may be an innocent excercize of free thought and speech but it smacks of scandal searching in the now familiar religious arena.  With so many real problems confronting the country are there not better topics for consideration?
