Tampa church directed staffers to make political contributions

A Tampa megachurch under scrutiny by Senate investigators directed church staffers to make political contributions to a Republican gubernatorial candidate, according to documents obtained by NBC News.

A month-long NBC News investigation also found information indicating that the church's pastor, Randy White, seems to have lied about a business transaction in a deposition made under oath, and misrepresented his religious academic credentials.

Without Walls International, a megachurch founded by televangelists Randy and Paula White, is one of six tax-exempt religious ministries the Senate Finance Committee is examining, amid allegations some of the ministers misused church funds to enrich themselves. Last month, NBC News reported the results of its investigation into some of these allegations.

Church directed political contributions?
NBC News obtained an e-mail (some identifying pieces of information in the e-mail have been removed by NBC) in which a Without Walls church staff member reporting to the Whites appears to direct other staffers to make political contributions to a Republican candidate for governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, who won the gubernatorial race later that year.

In the e-mail in 2006, the staffer writes, "Per our recent conversations…This is just a reminder that I need each of your checks for $500 made payable to: Charlie Crist for Governor.  I need to send these our [sic] tonight."

Florida state election records list several $500 donations to Crist dated days later, from individuals listed as recipients in the e-mail.  A spokesman for Gov. Crist told NBC News in an e-mail that neither the governor nor his campaign staff was aware that the Whites' church may have directed such donations to Crist's 2006 campaign.

The IRS prohibits tax-exempt churches from "directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for elective public office."  Without Walls International Church declined to respond to NBC News' questions about the e-mail.

[Update 04/04/08 6:35pm: On Friday, attorneys representing the Whites sent NBC News a new statement. "It is our understanding," the statement reads, "that no political contributions were solicited on behalf of the Church. If individuals solicited contributions for a particular candidate on their own behalf, they would have been doing so just as people who support a particular candidate would do in any organization – asking among their friends and colleagues at work."]

Church pastor lied about business deal under oath?
NBC News also obtained copies of audio recordings and documents which strongly suggest that Randy White lied under oath when testifying about a 2002 business deal.

Todd Bates, a pilot and aircraft broker who owns Motor City Aviation near Detroit, sued the Whites' church in 2002 because, he says, Randy White reneged on a verbal deal he made to purchase a used corporate jet Bates had found for the church.

In a deposition taken under oath as part of the case in 2002, White testifies that he never told Bates he would buy the airplane, and that he in fact never spoke to Bates by phone.  Here are excerpts from the deposition:

BATES' ATTORNEY: "You never had a conversation on the phone with Mr. Bates where you told him, I'm buying the airplane?"

RANDY WHITE: "Correct."

BATES' ATTORNEY: "You never were on the phone with Mr. Bates at all, to your recollection?"

RANDY WHITE: "Correct."

Then, a few moments later:

BATES: "So would it be fair to say that if, in fact, you did, say, have a [sic] conversations with Mr. Bates on the phone and did say those words to Mr. Bates, you're a liar?"

RANDY WHITE: "I don't lie."

At the time of the deposition, Bates says, Randy White was unaware that Bates had recorded his telephone calls with White regarding the plane deal. Bates provided copies of these recordings to NBC News. In a recording dated May 2002, Randy White seems to agree to buy the plane.

Click here to listen to an excerpt of a key exchange.

TODD BATES:
"If what you're telling me is, that you want this aircraft, and you want to do it, I will handle it for you, I will put together all of the details, and it will be dealt with, and it will be dealt with quickly, efficiently and then I will come down there and set up your flight department and get everything set up with your lease-back hours and everything like I said."

RANDY WHITE:
"Cool.  That's where we want to go with it."

TODD BATES:
"...if you're telling me -- as you being the head honcho, top dog at Without Walls -- that this is the deal, then you and me as Christians and whatever are agreeing that we've got a deal, then we've got a deal and we'll work out the details later."

RANDY WHITE:
"Good.  Let's make it happen."

In a recording of another call (click to listen) dated several weeks later, Randy White appears to backpedal after Bates challenges him.

TODD BATES: "I assure you that there's nobody else I would have done this for.  Except, I would've thought that a pastor of a large church gives me his word that he's buying an airplane -- I didn't think I had to worry about anything else."

RANDY WHITE: "Right.  Well, it's not that I was lying to you.  At that time I was buying the airplane, but a better deal came along."

"I was stunned," Bates told NBC in an interview, "at the amount of lies and misrepresentations."

Bates settled with the Whites'  church for an undisclosed sum.  Since then he has pursued a public Internet campaign to discredit the Whites as frauds.

Church pastor misrepresented academic credentials?
Bates provided NBC News documentation supporting another of his claims: that Randy White has lied about his academic credentials.  In preparation for his lawsuit, Bates researched Randy White's background.  He wrote to two schools Randy White had claimed awarded him degrees, asking them to verify the degrees.  In correspondence, both schools specifically denied awarding Randy White degrees.

A "Pastor's Bio" posted on the Without Walls International Church Web site in 2002 states that White received a Bachelor's degree in Ministerial Studies and a Master's Degree in Divinity from Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn., now known as Lee University.

While Bates provided the saved Web page to NBC News, NBC News independently confirmed its authenticity, finding the exact same text stored on an archived version of the church's Web site.

A representative from Lee University told Bates in a 2002 e-mail that Randy White "was only here for two classes and then left during our Fall semester of 1975.  He did not graduate from our institution with a degree of any kind…"

In his deposition in the lawsuit brought by Bates, White admits he obtained no degree from Lee, but claims he attended for two years.  In response to another question, he claims he received an honorary degree in "Humane Letters" from Virginia State University in recognition of his church work.

A representative from Virginia State University told Bates in a 2002 letter that Randy White's name did not appear on its list of honorary degree recipients from 1935-2002.

NBC News double-checked with both academic institutions.  While federal law has changed since Bates' inquiries, and now prohibits schools from acknowledging any information without students' permissions, neither school denied the validity or accuracy of the correpondence Bates provided NBC News.  Elizabeth Gearhart, a staff member in the Registrar's office at Lee University, told NBC News in an email that "Bishop White has requested that no information regarding him be released from our institution."

The Whites declined to be interviewed by NBC News or to answer repeated questions about these issues.  They have denied wrongdoing, stating: "We take our financial responsibilities to our partners very seriously and to the best of our knowledge we comply with all tax laws."

Last month, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, told NBC News that the Whites had agreed to cooperate with the committee's investigation. On Monday, a Senate Finance Committee staffer issued a memorandum saying it had received an intitial submission of information regarding the Whites' church.

At the same time, attorneys for the Whites' church issued a new statement saying "the Church is committed to complying with the requests of those governmental entities lawfully entitled to receive what they seek" and that church representatives "expect to have further dialogue with the Senator's office."

Linda Fecteau and Luke Mayo contributed to this report.

Sadly, this is what happens far too often with so-called televangelicals pursuing their social conservative agenda:  they attempt to inflict their doctrines on non-members/non-believers through secular law. Funny, I don't remember Jesus going to the kings of His time and begging them to codify His teachings into their secular laws to help him manage his flock!! They also do not seem to realize that calling for State intervention in private lives is a LIBERAL tactic, not how conservatism actually works! Reagan's mantra was "Let the marketplace decide." This applies to the marketplace of Ideas as well as goods and services.  When a majority of citizens chooses to forgo the practice of aborion, for example, then abortion may cease. Not until then, because a vocal minority cannot impose its will upon a lopsided majority. This is how free-market democracy works, whether we like it or not. If banning a practice was really God's Will, how could it possibly continue? Unless, of course, that allegation was simply made up and used as a cudgel to force others to follow self-annointed "leaders."  It is, after all, a very Human vice to crave Power (and it worked for Lucifer, too).
Oh, please.  The Mormon Church has been doing this for decades. Hell, even a registered independent discovers they are suddenly republican come election day.
Another reason why organized religion is a sham!
Why doesn't this surprise me?
I wonder what excuses this fraud will have when he comes before his MAKER.

How shameless can one be that one defrauds people in the name of religion.

And all this time I naively thought the only religious frauds were in third world countries.

When will America wake up and realize that people like the Whites will continue to prey on them and not pray for them?  The only thing that Randy And Paula White believe in is the almighty dollar, and miracles  do not come cheap.  After all, if you want to see heaven's door, better make out a check for $5 million dollars or more.
Megachurches = slime incubators
It is very interesting about how many evangelical Christians are getting corrupted when introduced to power in their lives.  Their definetly seems to be a trend that is so distict especially when it is in contrast to the New Testament teachings.

This observation is not to say that there is not a lot of corruption in politics or other places where there is power.  In fact, it has been very disheartening to see it so pervasive in Republican politics in the last few years, with a few cases in the Democratic Party also.

And then their are the large corporations like Enron, etc. so it can pervade as long as the elements of power and another vice, such as greed, are present.  I feel sad that these men could not have chosen better paths and been better examples to the young people of our nation.
Many of these churches have been found guilty of fleecing their flocks. And yet, people still give to them? These people are dishonest and totally unchristian. Jesus  NEVER got involved in politics, instead was "no part of the world.", as true Christians are today.
It's about time law enforcement puts these losers in jail. Strip them of all their assets and give it to the churches that actually help people. The chances of a rich man going to heaven are the same as a camel going through the eye of a needle.
Anyone want to abridge the First Amendment?  Let's regulate religious speech, so that the country has a chance to survive.  The religious fundamentalists in this country are no better than the Muslims in the Middle East.
Sitting in church no more makes you a Christian than sitting in a garage makes you a cadillac.
If churchs want to get involved in our government and politics, they should start paying taxes, if they refuse then they need to  SHUT UP!!!
What people don't realize is if this church is not voluntarily a 501c3 organization it can do and say anything it wants.  Churches are only silenced if they agree to enter the IRS system under 501c3.  If they don't, and about 10 % of churches don't, then they are still tax expempt, just people giving to them can't wirte it off.  It was passed in the 50's, sponsored by LBJ in a backdoor effort to silence churches.  Churches that enter the system are fools. Churches are tax exempt by virtue of the First amendment.  "Congress shall pass no law regulating the free exercise of religion".
Jim and Tammy Faye - Move Over
What a joke! They call themselves ministers of/for Christ and then belie the very principles that the Christ expounded, i.e. truth and neutrality.  How well such religious hypocrites are described in the book of Revelation(Apocalypse), a drunken whore riding on a wild beast. It will not be long before such religious hypocrites are destroyed by the very politcal machine they try to "ride" or direct.  Good riddance.
Take away their tax exempt status.
Every side sounds believable and good until you hear the other side.   I am big on defending the righteous, and the church.  I believe that in many cases these are one and the same, as it should be.  But must also admit that there are many charlatans and wolves out there, yes in the church also.  Of some 40 churches in our area, we have had two who have proved to be wolves of the worse kind, but don't loose sight that this still leaves 38.

Pastor Mike
Does this really surprise anyone?
I think the Whites should have to pay income tax on ANY salary received, also ANY money received into the church, should be audited every year and taxes paid on total collected, including their house.
Jesus must be so proud.
An outstanding piece. Please follow the money with, who is paying the attorneys, seize the moneys, seize property of the church as a criminal enterprise, and bankrupct these individuals with fines and a sentence so they may do GOD'S work in the penal institution so assigned.
PRAISE THE LORD! HE works in mysterious ways.

When will people finally understand that televangelists are a sham.  Most, like White have no credentials of any kind.  Few have ever attended a genuine seminary.  Yet, they reel people in and bilk millions of dollars from folks who have little or nothing to give, spouting [stuff] that comes from their personal, uninformed interpretation of the Bible.  Why don't folks ask themselves: How did a former, uneducated * * * * * gain the knowledge and experience required to preach to others and to council others?  Who knows?   My personal opinion is that only about 5% of the United States population is capable of critical thinking.  Most make decisions based on emotion, religious conviction (which generally requires that one does NO critical thinking), and prejudice.

Every few years one of these charlatans gets caught either defrauding someone, or having gay sex on meth, or visiting hookers, etc. but there is an element of our society who continues to believe that the "reverend", “brother”, or “Bishop” they watch on the tube is somehow different than the others.  Ever since Aimee Semple McPherson, these quacks have victimized sincere, trusting people.

I hope both of the Whites are found guilty of every crooked thing they've done and go to jail.  At least that will be two more of these frauds we don't have to worry about.
I believe everyone has a right to prosper themselves, earn a living, and even choose a lifestyle they desire to live based on their needs and desires.  However, I also believe that there are far too many so-called "ministers," who have been made wealthy from behind the pulpit.  If you want to use your "anointing" or "gift" to obtain wealth, then it is YOU who need to answer to God for that someday - not me, not anyone else reading this article.

But at the same time, you should have enough integrity and conviction to do it the world's way.  Don't get rich off the church...off of the anointing.  You want to write a good book and strike a lucrative deal with a publisher, my hat tips to you - you're earning it the world's way.  But don't take money out of your offering plate and then tell you congregation how "God" has blessed you... you were blessed by taking money out of the offering...which was meant to go into your ministry.

The games and justifications that are made by these [...] ministers cross into an area of grey allowed them by the "tax laws" that exist for non-profits.  What makes you any different from the convicted Enron execs, who are now doing time?  God help you if you call yourself a minister and do not act in a manner of respectfulness towards what you tell people you fear the most.
As a follower of Christ, the deception and money-hungry acts I see in so many televangeists makes me sick.  I truly hope people don't allow characters like these to influence their view of Christianity.  We're not all like this, and I certainly can't imagine Jesus behaving this way!
and what the hell do they need a plane for anyway?
Organized religion.........what hypocrisy.
Just remember what the Bible says.In the last days there will be false teacher's and false prophets along with many many other things. We are so very close to our Saviors return.Read your Bible.
John Doe, provide some proof to backup your wild claim that the Mormon Church tells anyone to do this: http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/public-issues/political-neutrality
This is just the tip of the iceberg.  Many Americans play by the rules, do things because it is the right thing to do, etc... However, many churches, religious institutions, non-profit (supposedly) organizations are structured to manipulate the system and avoid paying taxes.

While it isn't ALL, it is enough keep investigating reporters, elected representatives and IRS auditors busy for decades.

I am wondering if the money the checks from the staffers were written on was even their money to give.  I was approached in more than one election cycle to make a donation to a Republican campaign in Florida with money that wasn't mine.  I declined to participate.  The practice isn't uncommon amongst the Republican party.

I prefer not to give the details, but as an American Citizen it was a rude awakening.

It is no wonder that our Nation has gotten so off track.  Absolute power corrupts, absolutely.  AND don't kid yourself...money is power.
I am wondering where John Doe got his information. I have been a member of the LDS (Mormon) Church since I was 8 yrs old and have NEVER been told who to vote for, let alone to contribute funds.  None of the branches and wards that I have attended have had political guest preachers.  It's so nice to have accusations made without any evidence.
I have always thought that a church is a business...and should be taxed exactly like any other business...
Teach what you want, but pay taxes on the income...
I can not think of one single reason that should not be the case.....Other than that those that are profiting from it don't like the idea.....

Commenters have raised several issues, not all related to this case.

It is a sad day when a pastor lies. True, and some do. However, why would anyone cast all churches and pastors in the same lot as one crooked one? That's like saying your child's teacher is a pervert because another teacher at the same school was convicted of child molestation.
How many of you complainers have actually attended church for any length of time?
Churches don't pay taxes because they are organized non-profits. The people who attend the church, do pay taxes. Church staff pays taxes. Pastors can elect to pay taxes or not. If they nelect not to, then they also do not collect social security benefits. If you look at the Barna Group polls,  you will see that only 20% of church attenders pay 80% of the church expenses. So if some people are being duped, they fall within that slight 20%.

As far as staying out of politics, since when did my civil rights cease just because I go to church? Do you really want to pursue that line of reasoning? In addition, why shouldn't I speak out against abortion? You speak out against Christians. Should one be allowed and not the other? The "Church" is made up of people. The pastor is the leader of the group and it is up to that group to either follow or abandon the leader. It's really no one else's business. Just like it's not our business how much money others feed into their liquor/drug suppliers.

Personally, if my boss required me to pay any amount for any reason, unrelated to my responsibilties as an employee, politics or otherwise, I would have to question his integrity.

As far as Mr. Bates goes, it sounds like he may have suspected he would have a problem to begin with. Why waste time trying to trap someone you already believe is a crook? Especially if you call yourself a Christian. Reread the scripture that talks about being unequally yoked and forgiving, plus taking your business to the church and not the non-church. What happens to people like Mr. Bates is that his own character comes under question, and really, Mr. Bates is causing himself more suffering than he would have if he would have just shut down the deal. It is clear in the audio that he was trying to trap Rev White. The real question is, why would a business man make a verbal deal and then audio tape it, and especially without the knowledge of the second party to the deal? Where are Mr. White's rights to know he is being taped?

Come on people. Think with your head and not your hatred of the Church.

The Pastor lied...The Church broke the law.  They should not only lose their tax exempt status, but should also be heavily fined!!
Remember...the LOVE OF MONEY is the root of all evil. The Whites really LOVE MONEY.
Please know that leaders of the Mormon church do not solicit money for candidates nor is politicing allowed at any of its organized events or in its buildings. There are some members who are active in getting support for their cause/candiate but no official request from the Church leadership has ever been made except in the case of same-sex marriage amendment, which is directly against the beliefs. Other than that we are counciled to vote for whom we believe to be the best candidate.
The IRS prohibits tax-exempt churches from "directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for elective public office."
Ok, then Why is it OK for candidates like Obama to 'use" the church as a podium to campaign for office and speak of govt issues, but not OK for a church to encourage their flock to support a candidate monetarily?
You can bet that Obama's church goers have contributed heavily to his campaign,  but I don't see anyone attaching him for that. That in and of it's self smacks of hippocrasy. Separation of church and state my eye.
This IS really sad!  And WHOEVER does these things is doing wrong, ie, it is SIN!  However, which of us/you is sinless?  "NO, NOT ONE".
Wrong doing must be dealt with.  But, you wouldn't kill your whole lawn to get rid of the dandelion or crab grass!!  So, don't just 'write off' God/The Lord Jesus Christ!!!  Without HIM, we/you have NOTHING AT ALL!!  With HIM, we/you "HAVE EVERYTHING"!  May your heart be filled with peace and your life be blessed, for eternity!
PEOPLE TURNING THERE FLOCKS INTO SHEEP SO THEY ARE BLINDED BY THE TALL GRASS IS NOTHING NEW ITS CALLED,FEAR, AND IS USEED BY MANY.

  LARRY WINDISH  SHOW LOW AZ.
It truly is a shame that things of this nature happen but they have ever since the Church came into existance 2000 years ago. The Bible speaks of those who will "make merchandise of the gospel" and "teach damnable doctrines, drawing disciples after themselves". As a Christian pastor of almost 40 years I apologize to all those who have been defrauded in thses cases and to those who have reason to feel Christianity is a failure to our society.
If Jesus knew what has become of his religion, he would turn over in his "oops"... whatever.
they have their reward here in this life but wait on the next when JESUS says depart from me ye workers of iniquity I NEVER KNEW YOU!!!!! If people keep on giving to them, they need to read the word of GOD to realize how they are distoring the word of GOD NOW!!!
Since when did Jaysus ever have an airplane?
GOD KNOWS HIS CHURCH AND PROTECTS THEM.  THE ONES THAT ARE NOT, THEY WILL FAIL ...
In a free society church and state must never be allowed to mix. Religious belief and morality belong in the churches, homes, hearts, and minds of the faithful and must never be forced upon others in society who may have different beliefs, Religious zealots always attempt to force their beliefs and view of morality on society as a whole. They do all in their power to deprive others of free choice through the rule of law. Christian Extremists are just as dangerous to a free and democratic society as the Islamic Radicals and Sharia. Any person who cannot keep their relgious beliefs out of governmental decisions should be excluded from holding public office as they are a danger to a free society.
I cannot believe how many ignorant people live in this country. The Whites are definetly wrong in their actions, and should have to make restitution. However, most of the people commenting on this article have probably never given a cent to the Whites, so what is your real problem? The truth your envious. The First Ammendment is for the benefit of all Americans. Also, many clergy participated in the militias during the Revolutionary War; helping to warn, organize, and serve in military leadership. So, what do you have to say now? You ignoramises that shoot off at the mouth, and don't know our nations history are the ones that need to SHUT UP!
I completely agree-- let them pay tax.  Free speech is never free$$
It's time to eliminate tax exempt status on churches.
