Clinton calendars full of unexplained private meetings

Former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's calendar entries are full of unexplained private meetings on key dates when she and President Clinton were fending off a variety of scandals, the newly released White House records show.

Take Jan. 21, 1998. That's the day when most Americans first learned, courtesy of the Washington Post, that President Clinton had had a relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Mrs. Clinton's calendar entry shows that she left the White House at 7:25 pm that evening and returned 25 minutes later. The National Archives, which released the 17,484 calendar pages today, has excised the reason for the brief trip and the names of any of the people whom Mrs. Clinton may have met. The Archives, working in consultation with President Clinton's representatives, cite privacy concerns in blacking out all details of the trip.

Dec. 22, 2000 also remains a bit of a mystery. That's the day when Mrs. Clinton and the President met in the White House with a New York rabbi who successfully lobbied President Clinton to commute the sentences of four Hassidic men who had been convicted of massive fraud and conspiracy. The commutations were extremely controversial at the time, and photos of the meeting exist. And yet, there's no mention of it in Mrs. Clinton's daily log. The calendar simply lists four separate "private meetings" in the Map Room that day, with no names attached.

On Jan. 4, 1996, the calendars also record four "private" meetings that the First Lady held with her chief of staff, Maggie Williams, and undisclosed others. That's the same day that one of the First Lady's aides discovered a stack of Mrs. Clinton's law-firm billing records in the private quarters of the White House. Whitewater investigators had been searching for the subpoenaed documents for months.

A team of NBC News producers, correspondents and researchers pored over the White House logs today. The calendar entries show, as Sen. Clinton has argued on the campaign trail, that as first lady she had a continuing interest in substantive foreign policy matters, including Bosnia and the effort to find peace in Northern Ireland. “These documents are outlines of the First Lady's activities and illustrate the array of substantive issues she worked on,” Clinton campaign spokesman Jay Carson said. “Her daily schedules also list some of the meetings and travel she conducted to more than 80 countries in pursuit of the Administration's domestic and foreign policy goals.”

Foreign Policy Experience?
But the calendars also seem to show that, on occasion, Mrs. Clinton was not substantively involved with foreign affairs when a real 3 a.m. crisis hit the White House.

Take, for example, when Al Qaeda terrorists bombed the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, killing hundreds of people. Mrs. Clinton’s schedule does not show any foreign policy meetings in the aftermath of the crisis, only a trip to Andrews Air Force Base to console victims and their families as they returned from Africa to the United States. And when, in retaliation for those embassy attacks, President Clinton bombed Al Qaeda terrorist camps in Afghanistan, where was Mrs. Clinton? The records show that she was vacationing at a “private residence” in Martha’s Vineyard, Ma., and had no official events.

Foreign trips offer a mixed review of Mrs. Clinton’s national-security experience. On a trip to Japan and Korea in 1993, for example, her schedule was filled with teas, tours of gardens and other traditional first lady fare. And on a trip to Russia in 1994, Mrs. Clinton met with other first ladies and attended coffees and tours, separate from her husband or the Russian president. Clinton campaign spokesman Carson described the calendars as only a “guide,” and said that they “of course cannot reflect all of Senator Clinton's activities as First Lady.”

Indeed, on overseas trips in 1996, Mrs. Clinton held "private" or "closed" meetings with foreign heads of state in Greece, Turkey, and Bosnia--without the president's attendance. And on dozens of times throughout her White House years, she attended White House meetings with Cabinet secretaries, was briefed by senior National Security Council officials and met with foreign dignitaries from around the world.

Well this is sure to open a can of worms. It seems that which ever party makes it to the White House they do themselves in eventually and the people hunger for change then vice versa.
You can't help but question whether or not Hillary is really the expert with Foreign Policy or is it really Bill? Hillary has made it a point that she's familiar with Foreign Policy, but what has she actually acheived in regards to working so hard on it? Shame Hillary, these private meetings, and these middle of the night trips arent explaining your expertise in Foreign Policy!
This whole thing is really something I am not  surprised to see. It is so apparent that She and her husband are so involved with themselves and the power that really anything goes. Also where was she and the Pres. when he was being sought regarding Bin Laden?
So what's the point of this artical?  Really getting over the media's constant attempt to dig up dirt where there is none, be it with Clinto, Obama or McCain.  This is just another smear with no substance.
Sounds as Senator Clinton is making her trying to make herself look good but in reality she has no real first hand experience in foreign affairs,it seems her only duties were those of a president's wife duties.
Insightful, yet organized to look jaded and bitter.  The title suggests this is about unknown meetings, yet the article digresses into bashing Clinton's foreign policy experience.  Looks biased.  The title should point out that the reason why Clinton's planner was released in the first place was to highlight her foreign policy experience, and that WHILE investigating this, you found other oddities.

Would read far better than it does now.  Now it just looks like a bash-fest.  Loses audience.
I wonder why MSNBC doesn't spend any time investigating Obama. It looks like he gets a free pass on  any thing he says or does, but Hillary is looked at under a microscope. Used to be an organization to be respected but not since it became the "Obama lovefest"
Great example of political statements not equating with actual evidence.
Let's get real and stop the exaggerations, the only presidential experience that one can have is that of being president, not going on trips with or sitting in meetings with the president.  On my job, I do not get experience credit for sitting in meetings with my department heads or listening to others give speeches, etc.  Such situations do not and should not count as experiences that will enable you to  handle situations as president or in other positions.

Each of our presidents have learned on the job.  Some have done well and others have not done so well.  If you are speaking of experience for a second term president, his/her first term qualifies as presidential experience, good or bad.

Senators Clinton, McCain and Obama have congressional and possibly other experiences and should leave it at that. Presidential experience comes only from being president, not from wanting to be president.
America is in a real mess. Americans rather follow a lie then seek out the truth. Following
Hillary Clinton into the White house supported by the votes from the American voters based upon her claimed expierence is like burning your own house down. She is a Canidate of very little honest substance and certianly not a leader for our times. Greeting International leaders and attending Garden parties does not make a great leader.
So typical, today the media is transfixed with Hillary Clinton's first lady schedule from the 90's, while her opponent has on one hand, Tony Resco and the other his preacher of over 20 years, not to mention whatever else the media chooses to ignore. Shameless bias, Obama yesterday justifies his pastor and quickly turned the whole thing around so people from all walks of life somehow end up feeling guilty when it was he who supported and was inspired by this pastor, even getting the title of one of his books from this guy.
Obama is The Music Man, Professor Harold Hill, he is a salesman, a rainmaker. If Clinton does not beat him, McCain surely will in the fall. How many other surprises are to be learned about his past? Still the media finds the schedule of the first lady far more newsworthy.
When was Mrs Clinton elected to the post of offices she is said to have served in the 1990's... Is she telling us she ran the White house instead of her husband who was elected to???

Interesting about all the meetings that list no one isn't it????

As far as I can remember, she was in charge of the health care issue which failed big time....
Your article indicates that as First Lady Mrs. Clinton in 1996 attended meetings with Cabinet secretaries & was breifed by senior NSC officals. At this time did Mrs. Clinton hold a top secret clearance in order to be breifed on national security matters. If not, those who breifed her were in violation of federal law.
I thought it was the Drudge Report who broke the story about Lewinski but the author states it was the Washington Post. Is this revisionist journalism?
Hillary certainly has marginal leadership experience during world crisis except her vote to support the Iraq War.
The invisible "private or ghost meetings" indicate possible corruption for money in exchange for pardons.
What our country needs in a new visionary leader like Obama who is honest and direct!
Pretty sketchy, I would say.  Hillary has no Foreign Policy experience.  How was she able to be briefed by National Security Officials.  She did NOT have a national security clearance the entire time she was in the White House.  Wouldn't this be a violation of security policy??
I understand that there is a certain public right to know that our candidates words can be backed up with documentation.  I also understand that the candidates, by seeking public office open themselves up for scrutiny, however, do we really need to account for every minute of every day in the life of Hillary?  The reason these records were handed over was to validate her experience in foreign policy, not to second-guess why we are missing 25 minutes of time on a day when her personal life was in total upheaval.  In addition, is it possible that she did not accompany her husband in some of these foreign countries due to the fact that the action would have been an insult to the traditions and acceptable behavior in that country, or is it truly because she enjoys having tea more?  These are some of the things, as intellegent, in-the-know voters, we should be questioning.  Finally, if the media is going to question where Hillary was 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with every minute accounted for, I for one, would like to have the same exact information for Barrack Obama and John McCain.  Wouldn't that be considered fair, unbiased reporting?  Or is that asking too much?  Fortunately, I am intellegent enough to take the information I have at my fingertips about all of the candidates, do my OWN research and make my own decisions.  I just hope other voters have the sense to do the same thing as later this year when we choose our next president, it truly may make or break our country as we know it.
Excellent investigative reporting by Jim Popkin.  It appears that Hillary's docs have been redacted so much that they become practically worthless; however, the fact that they hide so much speaks volumes.  Wonder if she will redact her income tax returns too.
One can expect that the redactions are more important than than what is here. Where are the 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 tax returns? That is where the influence peddlers are. It's Rezko X $1,000,000. Show us the money!!
I would say the author does not like Senator Clinton, wouldn't you?  I really neither like or dislike her but was leaning toward Obama but when I see negative newscasting like this out of the clear blue sky about something that really isn't even news worthy I want to run to Senator Clintons side and support her.  What's funny is some of the most news worthy moments in the campaign have been regarding Rev. J. Wright.  Now this is a really negative subject, one that NBC could really attack but I have seen nothing really negative said by NBC regarding it.  I think...yes, maybe NBC is leaning towards Obama.
so when we elected bill clinton president...instead of the vice-president as his proxy he sent the first lady... and she holds her own private meetings. it shows that on several occasions the first lady went in his stead. so now it makes me wonder who will be running the country if hillary is elected. Private meetings and alll.....
Why spend energy on gossip?  Your article seems trite and reminds me of junior high kids looking for a scandal to create interest.  Lets focus on articles that will help the American mentality, rather than support our immature nature.
And these merky, closed door private meetings and breifings prove her 'experience' with foreign policy how? What major policies on foreign issues and/or foreign crisis, did Sen. Clinton develop as First Lady?
While the events mentioned may be 'news', I am more interested in those events that show Mrs. Clinton gaining the experience she touts so I may make an informed decision on the right candidate.  Did you find any to support her claims?
Has it really come to this?  Must America know the full details of every minute of a First Lady's calendar, every meeting she attended and who else was present?  Is it really newsworthy material that she happened to take a 25 minute breather after learning about some disturbing news, or that she actually enjoyed a few days of vacation without any "official" events (i.e., a true "vacation")?  I think not.

Obviously, America wants to get to know as much as possible about our presidential candidates.  This however, goes beyond that and attempts to cast a dark shadow on Senator Clinton based on what appear to be rather innocent and justifiable (should SHE decide she needs to do so, which she does not) pieces of information (note, I do not call these "facts").  The mere use of the word "tantalizing" in the headline alone sets the tone which is permeated through the article -- that "missing" details from a calendar must somehow mean she is up to something unlawful.

I note this "report" was compiled by no less than a dozen news contributors.  America, we should be smarter than this.  I'm not sure there is anything in this article which should even be categorized as newsworthy, let alone lead to a conclusion that she has done anything wrong.
The msnbc.com website headline was "NBC: tantalizing tidbits in Clinton calendar".  That linked me to this "news story".  I do not see anything tantalizing.  The conspiratorial tone of the headline I just mentioned combined with the one within this very link "Clinton calendars full of unexplained private meetings" is interesting to me.  If the "investigative journalism" displayed above is supposed to be indicative of "DEEP BACKGROUND" investigation, as the huge fonted pronouncement above implies, then our nation is in trouble.  Am I surpised that one date above shows Hillary Rodham Clinton unavailable for 25 whole minutes due to a private meeting?  No, not at all.  Did it happen to be a very difficult day in her life when she surely needs a few private minutes?  Sure.  So?  Even if it were any ordinary day in the White House, is she supposed to have been on videotape 24/7 or something?  It seems to me that anyone needs SOME private time.  I'm not surprised there are times listed as "private meeting".  Business professionals all over the country use the term "private meeting" on their electronic calendars.  I guess I'm baffled as to why having had some private meetings is supposed to be "tantalizing" or, frankly, even newsworthy at all.  If that's all anyone can dig up from the just-released information, I guess I'm not sure there's much to report here.  Three specific dates are fleshed out (a tiny bit, anyway).  A short section on what foreign policy experience was gleaned during the Clinton Administration follows this (again, there's very little info here).  That's it.  I'm not sure what the point of this online article is.  It seems to be just another example of the media bending over backwards to try to sensationalize and to distort reality.  I don't count teas as experience.  Your own comments above indicate there where times where Senator Clinto did meet with various heads of state.  Again, I guess I just don't understand your point.  It seems from my vantage point like this is simply an attempt to attack Senator Clinton.  No matter what one's political convictions, I do not think attacking for the sake of attacking is good for this country.  All of the negative energy is sad. really.
Oh btw, what foreign policy experience does Obama have, I mean aside from visiting relatives in Africa?
Wow! Can the tone of this article be any more biased? How about the press give Hillary an equal or at least fair chance at the White House. Is the press going to look at Obama's daily schedule, hour for hour? Enough!
Doctored documnets tell no tells.
With that vast array of "foreign policy" experience? you would have thought, she would have learned to actually look at the whys behind decisions to be made...such as the NIE before she voted for the war in Iraq. Give me judgement over experience, kandor over dodging facts. We are not electing a saint, that is why I will be voting for the Big "O" and possibly John over Hillary.
Bill said from the beginning that he would not release and records on Hillary. Now he released some but not enough to show that she had a continuing substantive interest in foreign policy matters. It's Bill's same old, same old. It depends on what is is! Not going to work this time. The American People want to know all that Hillary has made claim to, but is not yet revealing. Including, where Bill received his money for his Historical Museum. Without her record, which is non-existant, there is not way she is going to win the Nomination.
Its hard to be documented on paper when either a person is not participating in crises or runs from situations that could be an embarrassement.  I have that much White House experience and background in foreign affairs
If Hillary Clinton was a man, her experience/qualifications would not put her within the top 100 democratic leaders.
I would like to see a comparison between the Clinton Calendar and Mrs. Reagan; Mrs.Ford and Mrs. Kennedy's Calendars.
I would also like to see Sen. Obama and Ms. Obama's calendars for the past two years.
I would also like to see a list of contributors to Mr. Obama's Senatorial campaign. It seems to me this request falls under equal treatment.
Thank you.
I can not believe that with everything that has happened in the past seven years that this admistration has refused to make public with every lie, signing statement, and unnessisary secertacy this admistration and the two preivous republican admistration have diven use you choose to still go after the Clintons. Sir, I am a very liberal democrat and am not particualy fond of the Clintons, that being said get some guts and start investigating the two Bushes and the repub lican hero, reagan, because the main strem media has never followed through on any investigation of Republicans in the past thirty years.
For real "investigation", you should explain why the meeting with the rabbis was controversial.  Wasn't there allegation of traving pardons from President Clinton for votes for Senator Clinton?
Just more bad press about a candidate that has served this country for many years under different hats-shame on the press.
It's about time Hillary released some of her First Lady calendars. We didn't elect her as vice president, and she wasn't appointed to her husband's cabinet, so exactly what is all of this experience she touts? I suspect we will find her experience is comprised of traditional First Lady duties that she has embellished in her race to the White House. I believe her calendars will show that she has overblown her "experience". If being First Lady is such great foreign policy experience, then Laura Bush would be qualified to be president.
Look at them. Doing their DAMNDEST to make sure they can smear her to death. Cant stand that your Obama boy isnt quite what you thought he would be huh?
Why do the Republicans continue to try to drum up dirt on Hillary?  Haven't they got anything better to do.....like trying to cover all the sins of McCain????
All the presidents used there middle name in the past, if Obama is not muslim and has nothing to hide why does he not use it. I dont want a president who is ashamed of his middle name.

Clinton is no more corrupt than Obama.  She just has more strings to pull.
Wait a minute!  Mrs. Clinton did not even have a security clearance.  As a US Marine (with a top security clearance) it was drilled into me that for a security violation it was 10 years & $10,000 fine for all parties involved.  I must say that was 30 years ago.  Has security become so lax that you don't need a clearance to sit in National Security meetings.
How very unfascinating, I am a professional who uses a daily calendar for meetings and such. But looking back at the end of the year it is always surprising to see what was planned and documented vs what actually happened.
Where are the Obama "Deep Background" reports? Hillary shows up twice on the front page, Obama doesn't show up at all on the first two pages... Is he really that squeaky clean? Or is he not as important as the Democratic front runner?
Must have been purely a deadline in action here. For an NBC News Senior Investigative Producer to put together words to create an article with absolutely no substance . . . ya'll were reachin' with this one boys.
Did Hilliary Clinton breach security rules, when she involved herself in these various questionable activities? And what security clearance did she have? Can she be tried for breaching State Department business? What was recorded in the blacked out portion of her records? The Senate should call her for a hearing!
It shows the Clintons exagerated her role in the Bill's government - like Shakespeare said in Macbeth - "...full of sound and fury signifying nothing." Let the Clintons point out the experiences they undeservedly claim on her behalf!!
So if someone visits my home and my wife hosts them until I can come back does that means she's having high end meetings or just playing nice.

The only worst thing than having another Clinton in the White House is to have a McCain and another 100 years of war.. It's about time we stop being the world police and decide to fix our own home.

Bring the troops home and not only the ones in Iraq. Bring all of them and let them fix their own problems in the future without our help. Let's see if the UN can help them as much as we do, maybe they do, but if they don't at least they can't blame us anymore. Considering that we spend probably over $ 500 Billions every year just keeping those bases open, we could just wipe out our own debt in about 5 years.. That sounds like a plan to me, we could lower our taxes right after that in the same amount and have a much better life..

J.
It's about time some of this came to light.  Thank you for going through the logs so carefully.  Only hope this information reaches the public before this campaign goes on any further.  Angie, Detroit Lakes, MN
