Sen. Clinton accepts donations from troubled firm

Sen. Hillary Clinton has declined to return $170,000 in campaign contributions from individuals at a company accused of widespread sexual harassment, and whose CEO is a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record, federal campaign records show.

The federal government has accused the Illinois management consulting firm, International Profit Associates, or IPA, of a brazen pattern of sexual harassment including "sexual assaults,” “degrading anti-female language" and "obscene suggestions."

In a 2001 lawsuit full of lurid details, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims that 103 women employees at IPA were victimized for years. The civil case is ongoing, and IPA vigorously denies the allegations.

"This is by far, hands down, the worst case I've ever experienced," said Diane Smason, one of the EEOC lawyers handling the lawsuit. "Every woman there experienced sex harassment, they were part of a hostile work environment of sex harassment. And this occurred from the top down."

Sen. Clinton’s spokesman, Howard Wolfson, told NBC News in a statement that the senator decided to keep the funds because the lawsuit is "ongoing" and because none of the sexual harassment allegations has been proven in court. "With regard to the pending harassment suit, as a general matter, the campaign assesses findings of fact in deciding whether to return contributions," Wolfson said.

Allegations:
Adrienne Slick, who worked at IPA for seven months in 2000 and 2001 as a business coordinator and is now part of the EEOC suit, told NBC News in an interview that the sexual harassment was oppressive. “I had multiple managers come at me, press themselves up against me ... ask me to go home with them, and to a hotel room so they could fulfill their fantasies," she said.

The EEOC lawyers say the man at the top of the firm -  IPA founder and Managing Director John R. Burgess - was among the worst offenders. The EEOC lawsuit claims, “The harassment emanated from the top:  the owner and Managing Director, John Burgess, is accused of sexual harassment by at least 10 different women.”

Burgess has a criminal record, too. The former lawyer pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny in 1987 and was disbarred in New York, court documents show. Burgess also pleaded guilty to “patronizing a prostitute” in 1984, according to Erie County, N.Y., court records.

Still, none of that has stopped powerful politicians in both parties from being courted by Burgess and IPA. Since 2000, IPA officials and their family members have given Sen. Clinton at least $170,000 for her Senate and presidential campaigns, federal campaign records show. Senator Clinton also spoke at a company event and rode on an IPA jet in 2004.

In May 2006, the New York Times brought Burgess's criminal history, and the allegations against IPA, to Sen. Clinton's attention. The May 7, 2006, article was titled “Rubbing Shoulders with Trouble, and Presidents.” In the article, a spokeswoman for Sen. Clinton was quoted as saying the Senator was not aware of Burgess’s criminal past and "will be reviewing" the contributions.

Almost two years later, federal records indicate that Sen. Clinton still has not returned the IPA money. Howard Wolfson, her communications director, did not dispute the $170,000 figure in an email to NBC News. He said Senator Clinton was not aware of Burgess’s past legal problems when she first accepted the donations. "In 2000 and 2003 when Sen. Clinton's campaign accepted money from Burgess, it was not aware of his legal problems from the 1980s," he said.

However, there were public reports of allegations against Burgess as early as 2000. That’s the year that Inc. Magazine first reported that Burgess had patronized a prostitute and had pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny. And Senator Clinton’s campaign has accepted other contributions from other senior IPA officials as recently as last year, the campaign records show.

Many other politicians have been quick to distance themselves from IPA, and have returned donations. In 2002 in New York, Andrew Cuomo, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate at the time, returned $20,000 from Burgess. Cuomo’s office said the donations were returned after a New York newspaper reported on Burgess’s past legal problems and on the EEOC sexual-harassment allegations.

Other prominent Democrats also have returned IPA's donations including Sen. Ted Kennedy and then-Senate candidate Claire McCaskill. On the same day in 2006, Sen. Barack Obama received $4,000 in campaign donations from a senior IPA official and his wife. Obama quickly returned $2,000 from the senior IPA official, campaign records show. But the campaign has held onto the matching $2,000 donation from the IPA official’s wife, the Obama campaign confirms.

Some political analysts say it is surprising that the first viable female candidate for president would not be more sensitive to allegations of sexual harassment.

"The fact that Hillary Clinton at this point is holding onto money from a contributor who has been charged with sexual harassment can only be perceived as insensitive to women's issues and women," says Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, Senior Scholar at the School of Policy, Planning and Development at the University of Southern California. "I don't think that fits the definition of feminism, at least the last time I looked."

Adrienne Slick, the former IPA employee, says she's disappointed in any politician who would take or keep money from IPA. "This is not something that should be taken lightly, and to accept those funds makes a statement," she told NBC.

The EEOC lawyers would not comment on any aspect of the political donations, and confined their remarks solely to the lawsuit.

Clinton Campaign Response:
Wolfson dismissed the notion that keeping IPA money reflected a lack of concern about sexual harassment. "Sen. Clinton is proud of her long record of championing women's causes," he said. "When the EEOC rules on the allegations involving Burgess, we will consider that outcome in assessing if there is any reason to return his contribution." Of the $170,000 total in donations from all IPA officials and employees, Burgess and his family members personally contributed $16,000 to Sen. Clinton, campaign records show.

IPA Reaction:
For its part, IPA vigorously denies any wrongdoing and said it has been fighting the EEOC lawsuit for more than six years. "Since a lawsuit was filed in June 2001, IPA has continually and consistently denied the allegations," IPA spokeswoman Jennifer Cumbee wrote in an email to NBC News. "At IPA, we have zero tolerance approach when it comes to sexual harassment."

Cumbee added: "This involves primarily claims by persons who worked a short time in the mid- to late 90s (although there are some persons who worked after that).  Immediately after the lawsuit was filed and by early 2001, IPA in an abundance of caution had its sexual harassment policy completely revised by competent outside professionals."

She says, "IPA has had no unresolved claim of harassment for several years now and any one of its 2,000 employees who violate the policy, after investigation, is dealt with swiftly." She would not comment directly on Slick’s claims, citing employee confidentiality. She said that the EEOC already has dropped some claimants from the suit. “All employee claims have been contested as many have no witnesses or records or current complaints,” Cumbee said.

The IPA spokeswoman did not dispute that Burgess had a criminal record from his days in New York. "All that you have asked, in regards to John Burgess, is a matter of public record," she wrote. “Mr. Burgess is not a felon and was never convicted or pled to a felony.” She said that it would be unfair to judge Burgess on two-decade-old crimes, and pointed out that Burgess and IPA are solid employers who donate generously to charities.

I am not surprised she will not return the money. The woman is so struck to be President she will do literally anything. Pathetic!

Vote for Change Obama 08
And this is the paragon of feminism, who is supposed to be some "change" candidate, who is courting votes ONLY because of her gender?  This is but one piece of a career full of evidence that Clinton is opportunistic and has no values.  Thankfully, I'm an educated woman who knows enough to vote for Barack Obama.
i love it when a canidate trashes their princables to grab some money
Why would Hillary Clinton not accept $170,000 from a firm and it's employees who is being investigated for multiple incidents of sexual harassment.  Her husband is guilty of sexual harassment with Monica Lewinsky and Hillary happily has him out campaigning for her!!!
HRC will do or say anything to get elected, including selling out innocent women.  By aiding and abetting this abuse, she is guilty too.
Hello---REZKO----
This is vile and sad.
I think S Chambers above makes a good point HRC has been so close to Sexual Harassment so long she may not "get it."
But here she is playing to women with her "children" ad.
Too bad if the phone call is about massive sexual harassment issues she turns a blind eye....and what if it is her spouse.

The firm is innocent until proven guilty.  Charges do not always result in a guilty verdict. She is right to keep the funds.
what ever it take by hook or crook to win for herself the presidents  sit. throw the kitchen sink and what ever you can !by the will of the voters they will not allow you.
Check out www.ipalawsuit.com
John Burgess and all his cronies are involved in a Federal Racketeering suit also. IPA also has over 500 compaints with the Better Business Bureau and the Illinois State Attorneys office. How can Ms Clinton point out that's the EEOC case is not proven yet, the same can be said about the RICO suit and the 500 complaints and, and, and...
Hillary and Billy know all to well about John Burgess and IPA but greed and corruption is just a part of everyday life for the Clintons. Anyone remember White Water?
And as a side note:
Myron Cherry, IPA's Lead attorney and  a longtime Democratic fund-raiser, appeared in a federal indictment against Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who faces fraud charges related to an Illinois public pension fund.
Myron Cherry frequently steers contributions to Democrat candidates from questionable sources.

Hillary you sure know how to pick your friends.
Enemies might be a better choice in the future.
Business is business... i'm with her. Keep it. If it makes the slimeball feel good to give away his money, then it makes him feel good. If he was giving it to you, would you tell him no??
Whoa!!  This is really awful.  I could see if she was unaware of the pending lawsuits, but they were brought to her attention by the media, and she still goes ahead and accepts them?  The Clintons can't be that hard up for cash, and even if they are, this is dispicable.  But as others have said, she is obviously desensitized to the affects of sexual harrassment being that Bill has been guilty of it for most of their marriage. I don't want to see her get destroyed, but this is the types of things the American public needs to know about!
While I am an Obama supporter, I think it would be best to return or donate the $2,000 to charity. Clearly, Obama does not need the money, nor the taint that accompanies it. We have to be better than anyone else in this election, or we're just the same as they are. I hope that Obama returns the ill-gotten cash. We must be ever vigilant for the appearance of inpropriety.
She makes my flesh crawl.  It's not an issue of whether they have been found guilty or not - how typically Clinton - contort reality to suit your needs - it's the perception and my sense is, there is likely merit in the charges. Please God, end this torture on Tuesday....
Hillary has a problem but no one seems to see it.  This woman has been humiliated by her husband but she stayed with him because she wants to be president so bad. She will do anything to be president even if it means destroying innocent people who she feels stand in the way of her achieving the one dream she has went to hell and back with her husband.  I really want a woman to be president but Hillary is not the right woman to be the president of the United States. Her character is not what we want to represent us in the world.  Bill Clinton did a fine job but he was an embarassment to himself and all of us as our president.  Let's not be embarrassed again by selecting this mad woman to be our president.  She doesn't care about anybody but herself.  She portrays that she cares but she cares more about having power and that's sad.  She is the most miserable woman around who is stuck in a very unhappy marriage just so she can be president.  She wants people to feel sorry for her and wants people to think she is being picked on when in reality she is more deadly then our current president.  The world knows how Bush is but she continues to wear a mask so she can fool the American people.  I hope we take a real look at the real Hillary Clinton and you will see that she is not the right woman to be president.  I know the right woman is going to come along and make us a good president but please do not allow this woman to mess it up for the rest of the good women candidates.
Wonder how this one will be spun....a challenge even for the likes of Mark Penn.
Sad.  First I see an ad whereby she claims she is the best to protect our children when that 3 a.m. phone call comes in - when she initially voted to send our children to war.  And now, the same day, we see that she is not a champion for women - unless it suits her purpose.
The lawsuit has been going on for 6 years, so something must be there or else they would have dismissed it out of hand.

I guess I would have expected HRC to both denounce AND reject the contributions, to get rid of even the perception of impropriety.
Where there is smoke there is fire, where there is fire there is a Clinton smoke screen.
no she is not right about keeping the funds. not if she keeps hammering away at obama about rezko when she and her husband have been mired in political scandals. THE CLINTONS ALWAYS TRY TO HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!

and now she turns around and pretends she is the champion for all women. just like how she is the champion for the working class while sitting on the board of union-busting wal-mart.
we know the clintons for 15 years.they have no shame. let thm go to .....we dont need them.i wonder how clinton to face the people of the u.s.of america.
THIS JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT THIS WOMAN WILL DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY AND THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL IM SO ASHAME OF HER!
On behalf of working women everywhere, she should have emphatically "denounced and rejected" this firm's contribution. It's terrible that she's willing to sell out women in the work place for funds. Another example, of expedient and poor judgment.
Anyone who thinks Hillary would be a "woman's President" needs to think seriously about her record.  She has a long history of not only condoning Bill's affairs and abuse of women, but she also ran the squad of investigators and slanderers who at every turn attempted to discredit the women.  Hillary's first big legal case was defending a man against charges he raped a 12 year old, and a big part of her "defense" of him was slandering the name of the girl.  These are matters of fact.

Hillary should be competing for an Oscar, not for the Presidency.
This is the highest level of hypocracy yet from Hillary Clinton and her advisors. This is not a random investigation, but a widespread on-going action by a multitude of women... I am absolutely amazed at the stupidity of the Clinton campaign... again and again and again
It gets worse than that.   On November 8th, 2001 Bill Clinton was paid $125,000 for a "speech" in front of International Profit Association in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

This is part of where the Clinton's $40 million (and counting) fortune that they got since leaving the White House came from.   Some of this money has been put into Hillary's campaign, which makes a nice end-run around campaign finance reform.

These are some of the speeches, including the IPA one.   Some of them are to even more interesting companies, including those that stood to benefit from bills that Hillary tried to introduce.

Looks Like Obama or McCain are leaking garbage again
This is a non story, why should she return the money, it is from individuals who work for the company not from the company.

Please report on issues and leave this non issues alone, I would rather like to know why she want to force everyone to buy health insurance, she need to explain the meaning of the word "mandate" in her healthcare plan, is it to force the government provide healthcare to people or is it to force people even when they can't afford health insurance to buyer it.
Why should the fact that a company CEO is a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record be of concern to Hillary?

Her husband is a disbarred lawyer indicted by congress for perjury.
"Reject and denounce," indeed. Apparently, even Hillary Clinton expects a higher standard of ethics from Barack Obama than she does from herself. Glad to know the double standard is alive and well in the Clinton Campaign.
On behalf of professional women across America I am gravely disturbed that Senator Clinton is so blinded by her own aspirations that she is willing to enable the most harmful workplace environment for women.  If she had the leadership skills and experience she claims to have, she would know she needs to send a strong message on behalf of women in the workplace.  This is so shameful and is the type of behavior that breeds apathy - let's move on to someone who does understand leadership and the burden of responsibility that comes with the position.

In my career, I have many times provided leadership to set the expectations of workplace behavior, set an example of appropriate behavior in the workplace, and take immediate, decisive aciton if those expectations are not met.   I have had to take action to prevent inappropriate behavior of individuals in executive leaderhsip roles although it was certainly not a career enhancing action.  At the end of the day, your actions must be able to stand the light of day - integrity in leadership is essential to success!  Hillary Clinton needs to take a step back and gain perspecive on what is important in the world.
Just so Mr. Wolfson knows, if the EEOC sued they have ALREADY made their own findings.  Sen. Clinton loves to criticize others -- perhaps she should remember that people who live in glass houses ....she ought to be ashamed but that's not an emotion in her lexicon.
Okay, I found something here, I still believe this is a non story.

This is the real story, that she helped a man accused of rape get a lighter sentence by  impugning the credibility of the victim.
Wow.  So Hillary is keeping money that was given to her by a crook?  I guess now that Obama is cleaning her clock in every category (i.e. delegates, popular vote, money raised) she can't AFFORD to give back the donations from this crook like she was forced to when she got caught taking money from Norman Hsu.
If there was any remaining shred of doubt in anyone's mind that Hillary and Bill Clinton will do absolutely anything to win the White House again, this should erase it.
And while we're on the subject of Hillary and money, I want to know why nobody in the media is pressing her on the release of her tax returns.  She OBVIOUSLY is terrified of what it's going to show - that she and Bill have become multi-millionaires making deals with people all over the world and otherwise capitalizing on their "public service" as she likes to call it.  No wonder they're so desperate to get back to the White House... when people get rich, the next thing they want is to get even richer.
Pathetic.
OBAMA 08!!!!
AS a former employee of IPA I can say that the claims being made are absolutely TRUE! As a male employee I witnessed many incidents in which female employees were practically told their jobs depended on 'playing along' and 'getting to know' the bosses.

I can't believe Hillary is turning her back on womans rights. Guess everyone has their price. Wonder how mucgh she would sell the Whitehouse for?
Sen Clinton is soliciting the votes of Women, uhm and hollers about pimping out her daughter by the press, and following the steps of her husband Bill, uhm == makes you wonder what she will do to be President.  Thank goodness that I have decided to vote for Obama!
HRC will do anything to be Elected. Sure she took the money. She doesn't care about women, I would like to see a women become President BUT NOT THIS ONE. Pelosi, Boxer anyone but Clinton. She takes money from anyone, that why she wont release the tax returns. If the Clintons have nothing to hide RELEASE THE TAX RETURNS!!!!!
America, wake up! Here is your champion of women's causes taking money from a firm with widespread sexual harrassment charges.Hillary Clinton digusts me and needs to go. She is a perpurtrator of sleazy campaign smears and is an embarassment to the women and the Democrats of this country. HRC is in this race for her own power trip and she will bring down the party in order to get the nomination.Go Obama go! Oh yeah, Hillary when are you going to release those tax returns that show your 50 million net worth and all your PAC money? You are truly a champion of the middle class and understand them so well. Go Obama go!
And still she is unwilling to share the source of her $5,000,000 "loan" by releasing her tax returns.

I think a little denounce and reject action is due here.  Where's the outrage?
at least hillary did not buy a house from a slum lord and pay 300,000 dollars less than it was worth!!  but thats right obama does no wrong!! and according to the new add waking at three in the morning shows that all he can do is steal other's work
This is the same woman who defended a 41 year old accused of sexually assaulting a 12 year old by claiming the girl 'fantasized' about older men and made the whole thing up. The child was forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Andrew Young bragged about her 'Defense Committee' for Bill Clinton, before his first run at the Presidential office.  The committee's job was to 'neutralize Bill's women'.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=breSVtVYSmo

How can this be of a surprise to anyone!?!?!?
Why is this a BIG SURPRISE ???
Hillary is for Hillary.
I have always wondered how she can say she is for women's rights when she has proven time after time where she really stands MONEY !!!!
disbarred lawyer...sexual harassment...

These folks fit right in with the Clinton clan!
obama still has not returned all the money. why should hillary, its from their employee's dumb heads. WE WILL FIND OUT ALL KINDS OF THINGS ABOUT OBAMA IF HE GETS THE NOMINATION. THE REPUBLICANS WILL HAVE LOADS OF FUN.
Give us a break. MSNBC has always tried to defame HRC and give BHO a free ride. I dont see MSNBC or the MSM talking about Rezko - BHO Money man  or how he started his career.

I will vote for HRC in the texas primary and will caucus for her.

Well, lets see. First she takes a ride on the "Whitewater" scandel, then heads to New York so she can get elected in a known Democratic state, does "carpetbagger" come to mind.  Slams Obama for the Rezko thing, of which he returned the money to charity, now this.  No way does she or her miserable husband belong in the White House.
He returned all of the money from Rezko and DONATED it to charity. So there, how do you like those apples!
I am much more concerned with obamas ties with Bill Ayers and louis Farakann than a donation from individuals that works for this firm.  Get Real
If it were Senator Obama that had accepted the $170K contribution from IPA, Mrs Clinton would have been screaming for womens rights. This just goes to show how little she actually cares about women or anything (except money). This issue will only give Senator Obama additional firepower against her.
"The firm is innocent until proven guilty.  Charges do not always result in a guilty verdict. She is right to keep the funds.

Mark Hudson, San Diego, CA (Friday, February 29, 2008 5:50 PM)"

I concur with the quote above. I wonder how many of the commenters here would like to be proven "guilty", without a trial, simply because someone accused them of something. Each and every one of us is entitled to due process.

Of the candidates listed, Clinton is the only one who adhered to the letter of the law. The others acted out of political correctness. I certainly hope that I fare better, should I ever be accused of a crime.
